Is there a free text recovery for ZTE android (not Apple) phones?  It wasn't recognized by MobiKin or Dr. Phone.  Can it go back 60 days?

What type of text are you trying to recover ?
SMS messages ?
A text file ?
Did you delete the text 60 days ago, or did it come in 60 days ago and you deleted it recently ?
It's a good thing you're not on a regular tech forum; vague questions like this are generally ignored (or attacked,) as seems to be happening here.
Have you ever done a backup of your phone ?
Where did you run those programs from that you tried; on the phone itself, or from a separate computer that you jacked the phone into ?
The key question is this: How important is the data you are trying to recover ?

If Google Drive is already on your phone, we should be able to save your bacon. The Lifewire article below  will instruct you how.

The recovery process on android is a royal pain in the ass, and if you've used the phone at all since deletion (or didn't turn it off,) your chances of recovery diminish drastically. Put that sucker in airplane mode immediately if want any chance at recovery.

Photorec  https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download  - can recover more than just photos.

Easeus Mobi Recovery.   https://www.easeus.com/android-data-recovery-software/free-android-data-recovery.html

I've used EaseUS products and photorec before;  both work well and are more trustworthy than most of the other shit that's out there - free or paid.

You should be running a differential or incremental backup of your phone once a week  -  more if you're a heavy user.

Quote Differential backup
A differential backup is a type of data backup that preserves data, saving only the difference in the data since the last full backup. The rationale in this is that, since changes to data are generally few compared to the entire amount of data in the data repository, the amount of time required to complete the backup will be smaller than if a full backup was performed every time that the organization or data owner wishes to back up changes since the last full backup.

Quote Incremental backup
An incremental backup is one in which successive copies of the data contain only that portion that has changed since the preceding backup copy was made. When a full recovery is needed, the restoration process would need the last full backup plus all the incremental backups until the point of restoration. Incremental backups are often desirable as they reduce storage space usage, and are quicker to perform than differential backups

Linux software for this?

Is there a single "file" on an Android that contains the SMS/TXT messages? It is easy to back up contacts, photos, etc (simply copy to computer and burn or put on thumb drive) but where are the SMS/TXTs stored? At the carrier or service provider? On the phone? Both? Single file? Hidden or accessible (non-rooted phone?)

Oh, so ZTE Android doesn't mean Apple?

Android IS Linux - just googles' flavor of it. So yes, Linux software for this.
The answer to every one of your questions is in the articles I dropped.  ;)

I'm posting the following link because it offers more detail, not because I recommend the product. I don't use android - period.

Thanks. The previous articles seemed to be PC based solutions or Google Cloud solutions. Thanks this recent article seems to give what I was looking for (the name/location of the file in which SMS/TXTs are stored.) Granted they already have it, and I have nothing to hide, but would rather not use Google Cloud etc for back ups.
