No, there are no asides when it comes to Afghanistan.  It is truly a wonderful country, although smaller than the CONUS it has about the same mix of climate and landscape that you might find here.  Granted, it is entirely land-locked;  but there were parts of the country that would be indistinguishable landscape-wise from the US.  The skiing there would be awesome, and I believe some intrepid Afgans at one point or another were quite interested in developing a ski-mecca, if you will:
