I think there is a lot of reinterpretation going on.  Whatever his other motives, Art, in trying to court bellgab, naively believed that elevating someone from here, someone popular with the pathetic middle-aged horndogs who used to frequent this place, would be taken as a sort of grand gesture of thanks to his most ardent fans.

For an analog of a relationship similarly rich in reinterpretive possibility that evolves over time from halting courtship and the heights of shared fascination to the depths of mutual loathing, most of you need look no further than your (last) marriage.

Or, Art was looking for a way to back out of coming back after the Dark Matter fiasco.  Aldous and Heater wander onto the Bell estate for the BG interview, with the harlot Heater looking for any opening to make her move.  Art, being somewhat of a lecherous dude, sees something he likes, with Heater putting on the moves. 

The “test show” rolls around and “surprise, surprise, Sgt. Carter!” Heater is on, alongside Art as a co-host.  Since that went over like Hillary at a Trump rally, Art backs down on the co-host approach, but, with Heater’s devious input, decides Heater will go “undercover” as the producer until the timing may be a little better and Art can weasel out of hosting, with some bogus excuse, and pass the torch to his new friend with favors.  Art gets what he wants and Heater does, too, until she sees thing’s aren’t quite working out with the listening audience deplorables, especially the BG’ers.

Quite frankly, I don’t think Art had a really high regard for most of his audience, at least after his rise to fame.  He probably chuckled to himself over how easy it was to dupe most of his fans.
