As fishy as a lot of things that have surrounded this shooting are the clean shell casings are normal. After he shot himself he fell over and blood drained from the hole in the back of his head. There is no reason there should have been blood on the shell casings if there had been that would have been out of place.

I think it should be phrased "almost no" correlation since just by pure logic there will be some correlation, even if very weak. I also take umbrage with the author not stating what correlations could show when he ends with this statement:
" I could imagine any number of other factors that might be more likely a determinant of the murder rate than gun ownership."
Name them! I could say race, ethnicity, socioeconomics, urbanization, drug use, military experience, age, etc.

This looks consistent with self inflicted GSW. You will see the same in the video below...blood from the exit wound and nose. Now, there was no wall behind Paddock, so the gun was thrown back behind him, typical after recoil. You can see the blood spatter from the ejection of the gun as he fell. Pooling is consistent with the first effluent coagulating in the carpet, then the remaining blood draining from the exit wound pooling on top.

The shells were already on the ground, and are sitting in the drain pool. One would not expect them to be covered in blood. They may have some spray when his head hit the floor, but that might not be clear in the photo.
