Australian officials respond angrily to fresh attacks from Chinese diplomats
QuoteLate Tuesday, Nine Newspapers reported that an anonymous Chinese official had provided it with a document laying out more than a dozen complaints against Australia.

The document says Australia has unfairly blocked Chinese investment, spread "disinformation" about China's efforts to contain coronavirus, falsely accused Beijing of cyber-attacks, and engaged in "incessant wanton interference" in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang. It also lambasts the Federal Government's decision to ban Huawei from 5G networks and criticises Australia's push against foreign interference, accusing it of "recklessly" seizing the property of Chinese journalists and allowing Federal MPs to issue "outrageous condemnation of the governing party of China".

[...]

Beijing has hit several Australian exports with sanctions and has made thinly-veiled warnings that more products will be targeted. On Tuesday, China also responded angrily to a new defence pact between Australia and Japan.

Meanwhile Chinese state media is continuing to berate Australia. Earlier this month the China Daily warned Australia would "pay tremendously for its misjudgement".,Late yesterday, Xinhua also joined the chorus, warning Australia that its "ideological prejudice" was "poisoning relations between China and Australia." "For these China-bashers it is imperative to reflect on their words and deeds that have caused setback in the bilateral ties," it said.

Emboldened by the prospect of a Biden presidency although they still haven’t acknowledged him as president elect (which he isn’t yet).

The Party That Failed - An Insider Breaks With Beijing
QuoteSo I should not have been surprised when it turned out that Xi was no reformer. Over the course of his tenure, the regime has degenerated further into a political oligarchy bent on holding on to power through brutality and ruthlessness. It has grown even more repressive and dictatorial. A personality cult now surrounds Xi, who has tightened the party’s grip on ideology and eliminated what little space there was for political speech and civil society. People who haven’t lived in mainland China for the past eight years can hardly understand how brutal the regime has become, how many quiet tragedies it has authored.

China launches ‘gray-zone’ warfare to subdue Taiwan
QuoteHaving crushed the resistance to its rule in Hong Kong, China is moving against Taiwan with irregular tactics meant to exhaust the island's military - which is in bad shape to confront the threat. It's unclear how the incoming Biden administration will respond.

Article discussed how Taiwan's defenses are in trouble, so I took a look - they've got a mixed bag of funky old stuff. I guess the sanctions on sales have taken a toll.

Their surface navy should give the PRC a bloody nose - they have a mixture of Kidd, Knox and Perry cast offs from the US Navy plus some French stuff.
They'll lose them all in a hurry but assuming they are maintained and handled well they'll take a bite . I would have thought attack subs would be a priority so they could maybe take the fight to the PRC but I guess not. They only have four - two US Navy subs built during WWII and two old Dutch boats. Ouch. Air Force they have a weird mixture of Mirage's, F-16's and a home grown bird. I guess an advantage they have is that they don't have to fly far at all to get their anti-ship missiles off. Seems like their Army has some nice helicopters but not very many and they have a mountain of tanks - they are older and if they don't control the sky they are dead meat. They have a few cruise and short range silo based missiles that might be able to damage some port facilities for a time.

Ha!  Yeah, right.  How about “by bending over and asking for more.”

Internet says that Jinping Xi is having a little brain surgery. Biden style.
