BELL HELICOPTER REBRANDS TO “BELL”

Bell last year began working with Uber to design a battery-powered, tilt-rotor small aircraft that could be used to launch an air taxi service in Dallas-Fort Worth, possibly by 2023.

Amid liquidity concerns, China's HNA Group aviation fuel bill hits $476 million
QuoteChina’s HNA Group has amassed an estimated 3 billion yuan ($476 million) bill with a state-run aviation fuel company, two oil industry  sources said, underscoring how a deepening cash crunch is plaguing core operations at the conglomerate. HNA’s outstanding balance with China National Aviation Fuel Group Ltd (CNAF), the country’s near-monopoly marketer and distributor of aviation fuel, has swelled significantly over the last six months, the sources said, without quantifying.

“HNA has not stopped fully paying its bills, but it only has paid a small amount at a time, so the outstanding (balance) has grown bigger and bigger,” said a senior oil industry executive with direct knowledge of the matter.

CNAF has continued to supply fuel to HNA airlines, concerned about the impact of suspending sales for airlines that make hundreds of international and domestic flights every day.
“(Ironically) it’s now CNAF’s social responsibility to keep its flights running, because if fuel is suspended, passengers will be hurt and then it becomes a social problem,” said the first executive.

HNA has controlling stakes in Hainan Airlines Holding Co and 12 other carriers in China and Hong Kong.

Russian plane crash in Syria kills dozens - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-43305835

An-26s don't have the greatest safety record, and this one was probably at least 30-35 years old.  As in most cases in similar situations, the immediate claim is the a/c was not shot down.

And what do you think?

A mishap is most likely to occur at landing than any other phase of flight.  Pilot/aircrew error accounts for over 50% of all mishaps.  To my knowledge no faction has claimed responsibility for shooting the down the a/c, nor have I heard any reports of the Russians launching retaliatory strikes as they've done in the past when one of their a/c has been shot down.  The Russians do not have a good reputation when it comes to maintaining their a/c, and this was an old a/c.

Where's the air marshal?

*lol*  What would she be charged with?

I once watched a woman across the aisle from me change her baby's particularly nasty soiled diaper on her fold down tray table.  She left it sitting on the tray until a stew came by collecting trash, the look on her face spoke volumes.  From that point on I carried a fistful of antiseptic wipes to clean my tray table before using it.

Nothing.  Hell - she'll probably be hired by Google.   She had a problem and she solved it!

Definitely more of a California Google company not a Bain & Company hiring question....

If the diaper isnt changed the baby could get a UTI.  So, where is the changing table?

Gag.  One more reason not to fly commercial.  Not that I don't enjoy being strip searched, fondled, and having my peanut butter confiscated.

I got to fly this VMS a few times. Dick Covey and I tested out proposed software changes for nosewheel steering.

I even kept it on the runway when they blew the right side tires on me. I lost it (and almost lost my lunch) when they blew the left side tires though.

GE begins in flight testing of their new engine for the 777X

QuoteGE Aviation’s 747 flying testbed with the GE9XTM engine on the wing took off from Victorville in California at about 1040 on Wednesday (US time). During the four-hour flight, the aircraft and engine “completed the entire test card and validated key operational and functional characteristics enabling the test campaign to progress in subsequent flights”, GE Aviation said.

“Today’s flight starts the beginning of the GE9X flight test campaign that will last for several months, allowing us to accumulate data on how the engine performs at altitude and during various phases of flight,” GE Aviation GE9X program general manager Ted Ingling said.

The engine has also undergone icing tests in Winnipeg, Canada and crosswind testing in Ohio. The program is forecast to receive certification in 2019, GE Aviation said.

Built with a composite fan case and carbon fibre composite fan blades, the 134-inch diameter GE9X engine is designed to deliver some 105,000lb of thrust. Other key features included a next-generation 27:1 pressure-ratio 11-stage high-pressure compressor; a third-generation TAPS III combustor for high efficiency and low emissions; and CMC material in the combustor and turbine.

Fun fact: the GE90 engine which is fitted to the older models of the 777 has a diameter larger than that of a 737's cabin.

Federal Flight Deck Officers: The airline pilots trained to shoot hijackers
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43377461

Interesting read - I knew that some American pilots were allowed to carry, but didn't realise there was actually a government program to go along with it.
In Australia the laws surrounding guns and pilots are a bit of a grey area unless they've changed recently, and at least in the aviation laws pilots are allowed to carry unloaded (I think) guns but not to discharge them on the aircraft without the FAA-equivalent's express permission. I vaguely recall that 'pilot' was under the occupations allowed to obtain a gun, like farmers.

I saw a film years ago of a Sea Dart disintegrating in flight during a high speed, low level pass.  The test pilot, who died in the mishap, over compensated for a nose low attitude and induced a severe pitch oscillation that tore the aircraft apart.  One of the more disturbing mishap films/videos I ever saw.

The report states that the two fighter jets, among the most advanced in the world, circled at high altitude above Persian Gulf sites suspected of being associated with the Iranian nuclear program.

It also states that the two jets went undetected by radar, including by the Russian radar system located in Syria. The source refused to confirm if the operation was undertaken in coordination with the US army, which has recently conducted joint exercises with the IDF.

The source added that the seven F-35 fighters in active service in the IAF have conducted a number of missions in Syria and on the Lebanese-Syrian border. He underlined that the fighter jets can travel from Israel to Iran twice without refueling.

It has been reported that, in China, it is not uncommon to see, with parents nearby, small children peeing on the floor of a gate waiting area. You'll just have to Google westerner's travel experiences in China, especially away from the larger cities, like Beijing.

Can planes be ghosts? Can you indentify the craft? And has there ever been a silent plane of this sort? ???
