Veterans. Thank You For Your Service!

Hell, I am a veteran and I wish people a "Happy Veteran's Day".  Unless I know for a fact that they served as well, then I wish them a "Thank you for your service, Happy Veteran's Day."

It should be a happy day, after all it was created to recognize and remember the War to End all wars, right?  I mean almost a hundred years of peace and tranquility.  Cats and dogs living together, St. Louis Cards fans and Chicago Cubbies fans walking hand in hand down the street celebrating another wonderfully crazy year of baseball...

Damn, it's good to be alive!

I think it should be Veteran's Weekend, give me more time to hit all the free Golden Nugget buffets, and the free Olive Garden unlimited Soup/Salad & Breadstick deals out there.  Free Denny's 1-egg breakfast and what-not.

Here's too FREEdom...

I kid, I really don't go to the free whatever things they have on Victory Day.  Although my mother once insisted I go with her to Olive Garden one year:  True story, the young lady that was our waitress was someone I served with in Afghanistan, same FOB even...  I should've got her phone number she was cute...

NO. I'm not angry with you personally..
I just was shocked how someone can associate this actually somber celebration with happiness,
to me that somehow doesn't go togheter.
It doesn't have to be miserable day either -it just day to reflect - no matter what you or others will say, no matter how passionately
you or others will justify that is totally appropriate to say "happy Veteran day" to me that is one case where "have a happy day"
just doesn't  cut it.

You know in some cultures people are "celebrating" ritual service 40 days after someones death
you don't say to them "happy celebrating" on that occasion...anyhow to me there is nothing to be happy about
remembering war times ,even if you are happy that you survived it, you have awful memories of terrible war events
your friends who were blown to pieces ,etc-etc-etc

it's just sounds weird to me assigning the word "happy" to that Veteran day..no matter how you slice it

Please accept my apology if I hurt your feelings /and I probably did,but wasn't in a vicious or bitter way/ just I was so shocked
and took that as if that was just irresponsible way to use that word "happy" in this connotation

I never heard anybody using word "happy day" in association with Veterans day, saying "have a Happy Veterans Day"
..so perhaps that was the reason I was so shocked when I read it, I took that as just half-ass attitude to just say something

Again, my apology to you, especially that you posted that you are taking more active participation on that day helping
with those event,../but that was not known to me when I read your comment/

This is just an interpretation conflict, I don't often talk about these things at all. However I thought i'd just share that with you. Have a good one.
