Reactions of German scientists to news of the atomic bomb in WWII

Evidently the Allies had sequestered several German scientists and had hidden recording devices in their living quarters.

After the first atomic bomb was dropped, the Allies told the German scientists and then listened to monitor their reactions. This is a transcript which documents their reactions. Very interesting range of emotions and reactions.

Utterly fascinating, I'm not a scientist but the psychology, history, and working group dynamics stuff mentioned and discussed and even the philosophical musings are fascinating. Thanks for posting. I haven't seen this before.
ps: some of the quotes are amazing! Just one "if the Americans and British were good Imperialists they would attack STALIN tomorrow but they won't do it....")
"If one hasn't got the courage, it is better to give up straightaway." and many others.

Suh-wheat!

I understand that iconic "bouncing bomb" dam-buster from WWII was to knock out the hydro-electric plant the Nah-Zees (to use old Tarzan speech) were using to study "heavy water" whatever "heavy water" is...

Not Sure.
No the raids in Norway were for the heavy water; the Dam raids on the Ruhr were to knock out the power generation for the mining operations, manufacturing, drinking water, and canal operation in the region. (At least supposedly.)

Juan

Heavy water contains a different hydrogen isotope and is useful in regulating neutrons in nuclear reactors.

Not Sure.

This is a good documentary. The 'Dambusters' film is actually mainly fiction, because the raid itself was still restricted under the official secrets act; the producers simply didn't have access to the facts even if they'd asked for them.

The truth is far more daring and far more involved than the film portrays.
