Raw milk

Started by somatichypermutation, January 14, 2013, 03:37:09 AM

People who drink raw milk have never been to a farm.  These are not idyllic farms where animals are milked by hand.  These are operations where hundreds or thousands of females are milked a day, where these femals come in from a muddy field where the cow has laid or walked in mud that includes their own feces, the udders are given a quick disinfecting wipe and hooked up.  Aint no way this is sterile.  The cow is machine milked through a huge system of pipes that are not sterilized to manufacture instructions as that costs money.  Drinking raw milk would be akin to drinking raw water, meaning water from puddles.

This was Ian's topic last night, maybe he is getting more like George.  Too bad.

When I lived in Atlanta, there was a dairy (Mathis) that sold raw mild commercially - for either home delivery or in stores.  They had sold the product for decades without any problem that I ever heard about, and there were several times the federal government made investigations.  The Ag department, at one time, tried to force them to label the milk as "artificial milk" because it was not fortified with vitamins A and D.  They were not successful.

I'd warn against drinking raw milk with the exception of a source such as Mathis that has a long safety record.  I don't know if that dairy is still in business or not.

I`d warn against consuming ANY dairy products -- raw, or otherwise. Cow milk is perfect for...baby cows.

Let the baby cows have their milk and drink it, too.

I switched to almond milk for cereal a few years back...

Full fat cow juice for me; In other news, food is bad for you...I'm warming a very agreeable Scotch Whisky at the moment.  Dairy farming is different in the UK, and I think there are very few places where milk straight out of the cow is allowed to be passed for human consumption-I vaguely remember several years ago some bother over it concerning a farm who was doing it, but I can't remember the details. Other than that it's all UHT, sterilised or pasturised. I have the pasturised..Thank you Louis!

mmmmmm titties.  I heard some of this raw milk and the farmageddon stuff last night.  Can't say I'm too familiar with any of it really.  I've always drank what I'm guessing is probly the worst of the processed milk.  Straight up whole fat red cap stuff.  I find it quite yummy and filling.

The only thing I am familiar with when it comes to milk is some crazy theory about the growth hormones they give to cows making it into the milk and into people.  This supposedly causes all sorts of side effects... the only one I can really think of right now is that female humans have seemed to grow boobies younger and younger.  It's that or I'm becoming more and more of a pervert.

Thanks harm your edit cut right down to the crux of what my post was all about anyway.

I have bought milk from Whole Foods that has only been pasteurized, and it comes in glass bottles which are returnable to the store. Guess perhaps they return them to the source. Funny, you have to either shake it up or pour off what I assume is the fat.
What did they do in the olden days? We're human stomachs tougher back then?
Isn't milking cows why milk maids had such nice complexions, avoiding pox, or is that just a myth?

Juan

Yes, you have to shake up pasteurized milk.  In the old days, the dairy delivered the milk (in glass bottles) to your door every morning and picked up the empties.

Hmmm, I wonder how that works for calves then. Do momma cows have to frolic around to mix or do udders do that naturally....*imaging that in my head*
;) :)

In Scotand the cows give milk with a hint of single malt whisky..Rumour has it, that French cows' milk has a brandy flavour; German cows, rumtopf; Irish, Jamesons...  :)
