The Fret Files: the guitar workshop podcast

What do you think of the globabl Gibson/Fender knock offs that come out of China?

There is a whole subsection on youtube of people giving their opinions on the guitars.

Have you ever had any come through your shop?

I am currently in negotiations to import kits of these guitars, finish them here and market them as cheap knockoffs...

I live in the San Diego area, I am very aware of/have worked for/known CEOs, etc...  Of Carvin, Taylor, Azola (RIP), Zolla (good riddance), Deering Banjos, etc...  And, minus a few little stupid things, I have been impressed enough to want to put my own badge on them and make a margin on them that's much smaller than the big companies with the aim of keeping myself busy.

The Chinese mentality is a challenge.  They are not about specifications, they are about commodities and their sales.  Most of their staffs do not care one thing about guitars (unlike Carvin, where, if us in the Sales/A&R staff didn't like guitars, we'd gone somewhere to get paid real money for our efforts).  I've gone through three weeks of communications only to find out a spec. on the back end that should have been disclosed up front.  I wrote a condition of sale as 100% refund if the agreed-to specifications were not met on the instruments.  Simple things, nut widths, nut material, wood selections, fingerboard materials and inlays, hardware colors...  Only then did they disclose that they'd not be able to guarantee 2-piece, center-joined mahogany bodies.

Very depressing...

Just listened to the last podcast.

Pretty great.

When I briefly lived in Seattle, I actually went to that guitar store a bunch of times.

not a player but i saw there is now a guitar designed for female guitarists...my general question is...is it really needed? has it been an...issue before?

Yeah, I thought that men and women were exactly the same with no differences in the brave new world of today?
Maybe the special girl guitar has better "woman tone."

They suck really bad and people buy/sell them on craigslist and think that they're real.
It's certainly a big problem.  They're counterfeits, and they suck.

My female guitar expects me to read her mind.

I'm really sick of it.

Play what you mean!

Mean what you play!

Is that so goddamn hard?

It's the silent treatment that always gets me.

Sometimes, I just want to get in the car and drive and drive and drive.  Tell her I'm going out for a pack of strings and never come back.

In a recent argument, I said something sarcastic... That she always seems to be in Phrygian mode.

We're just hurting each other.

I know man, I try to explain being different isn't a bad thing. Then for the next two days, I have to walk upstairs to play her. It isn't easy.

Mine accused me of using a cheap pickup line on her and then just stringing her along.

Try turning it on first.

Then you can play beautiful music.

I don't play guitar (I play soprano and alto recorder, and keyboard), but I know that men and women have a different point of balance.  Men also tend to have larger hands.  I don't know whether these are minor differences in the manufacturing of a guitar, but may be big differences for the musician.

So...  With Prince's death, I couldn't help but to replay over and over my interaction with Larry Graham and Prince's guitar tech for a wireless MIDI-controlled guitar idea.  I ended up coordinating a wired MIDI guitar (a white pearl Carvin TL60 (no logo on it) with an Axiom MIDI pickup system.

I even consulted an acquaintance of mine who was an engineer working on wireless technology for the military.

Another one of those cases where I should have kept telephone numbers personally (instead of keeping them strictly at work).

:(

General I'm curious if you're familiar with this shop's custom guitars.  I randomly came across this list and to be honest felt a smidge of guitar lust.  You can click on each one to get details of their components.

Has anyone here heard of Jacob Seales?  His , awesome, riff is played at the intro and at the end of the Trump rallies.  He is magnificent and gifted artist.  I haven't heard his music for other candidates, so maybe there's a contract about only playing at Trump rallies.  Anyway, the first clip is fantastic.

The second clip is of Jacob and his dad who also plays a fiery axe.  I hope you enjoy both. :D

I'm about to pay $60 for one of these wiring harnesses. If I wasn't so useless, I could probably put this together for $15 in parts.

Then I'm getting a Compton bridge for $70.

I'm going to have an expensive cheap guitar eventually.

My new toy I picked up at a pawnshop while on a business trip in Virginia.  I was unaware that Epiphone made any like this until I did some research.
