i agree.  they're dangerous and should be outlawed.  remember how bent out of shape everyone became when firestone had the problem with tread flying off their tires?  i'm sure retread tires on trucks experience this problem FAR more often than firestone tires ever did... yet nobody complains or raises any red flags.  when the daughter of some hack legislator gets killed because of it, THEN you'll see something done.
Tires don't have to be laying in the street to hurt you.

Agreed.
Ian Punnett is one of them; he might be the first person I really noticed doing it.
I remember him starting several of his shows with the word "so," especially irritating when it was part of one of his also-infuriating "in media res" starts-- you know: the way he starts a show with no kind of introduction, like you've caught him in the middle of a conversation.

i guess i said "people in the tech industry" because the first person i noticed doing it was paul thurrott, a microsoft blogger/reporter/podcaster who hosts a podcast called windows weekly.  almost EVERY sentence from this guy starts with the word "so," and i then noticed numerous other people in tech (reporters, bloggers, podcasters, engineers, venture capitalists, etc.) doing it.  it's probably one of the worst verbal affectations i've ever encountered... even worse than madonna's phony british accent.

It's also common in posts to the open source software support forums I frequent. I think it's just another verbal crutch, like 'ya know' or 'like'. This too shall pass (to be replaced by something even more annoying).

Interesting video.  My foreman at a mine had a story of being in an Argentinian mine when a tire on one of the mine trucks blew.  Usually they let go at the bottom of the rotation (when they make contact with the ground.)  This one, for some reason, let go at the top- right under the cab.  Use your imagination as to the result with the video as a reference.  The tires on a 797 are well over 13 feet in diameter.

The "mormon" add on cg looks like this in my peripheral vision.

Every version of windows I've ever used has issues with the screen shutoff working erratically.  I've fiddled with the power management/screen saver settings endlessly, and it's always unreliable.  Can't they fix that shit?

malfador

what annoys me? Mummy's. why? they're assholes...they don't swing a machete like other horror characters, they don't try and eat your flesh, they don't even try to mind fuck you...they just mumble through their wrapped up asshole faces and stumble around..frankenstein's monster mumbled but he was badass and would throw kids into lakes, that takes balls.

I mean sure there is the belief that if one touches you, you become cursed...but is that all they have? weak sauce...sorry Lon

I suffer this indignity as well.  Not often, but when I do, I try to remember that nobody ever died from lack of sleep.  Use it as an excuse to get something fun done: like reading, stargazing, spying on your neighbors, shooting raccoons with a pellet gun.... etc..

Zircon

Coaster, General ... why do you think insomnia seems so rampant in our society today? Might it be that we all have anxiety and this shunts our ability to truly let go and get some really effective REM sleep?

In my case, in the last four days, I've had only one night where I got 7+ hours of sleep. Am finding myself waking up around 4AM after nodding off in bed about 12:30AM or so. I get up and put on some coffee, tell the fucking dog to get the fuck off my leg, bring him outside for a piss/poop session (assuming he needs to). Kind of shuffle around while I drink a cup, blow my nose and work out my kinks. Will come in and put on some ambient music. I like the dark, pre-dawn but around 9AM I am a useless corpse when I get so little sleep.

So General, it seems you and I do some of the same things. I usually don't go shooting things though as I am still yawning and don't have much of a game reserve. My neighbors are still asleep and I'd not want to get caught peeking on the sly.

Coaster, try taking "Nature Made SLEEP" (Natural Acting Sleep Aid). My youngest daughter swears by them.

Melatonin is good stuff.  Cheap, non-addictive, and available OTC.  Can give you weird dreams in stronger doses, though.

people HAVE died from lack of sleep. It took a long time but it happened

When I have trouble sleeping I find it helpful to get up and watch tv or read or listen to the radio rather than lie in bed thinking about how I can't fall asleep. I also find it much easier to sleep if I've exercised sufficiently. I also refrain from caffeine after noon

There's such a thing as sleep hygiene. Read up on it. It might help

For me, taking calcium/magnesium in the evening (about an hour before bedtime) helps me sleep like a baby...  just my experience.  (Disclaimer:  "I am not a physician and am not prescribing")

Zircon

CoastCanuck, have you had bouts with muscle cramps or wrestless legs when finally reclined and in bed for the night? I found that sufficient levels of Magnesium worked for me when I read up on it. Bdubb, absolutely right about a physical workout. For me taking a three mile fast paced (4mph) walk each early evening helped get my (physical) system working properly after a day at work. Ziz, I used melatonin for awhile but the effect wore off and I found I had to start using more than one. Maybe it was the strength? Dreams? I find that when I have taken Xanax I sleep like the dead.

HorrorRetro

I've had insomnia off and on for the past 18 years.  Over the last few months, I've taken a cal-mag-zinc before bed, and it does seem to help.  I still only sleep for a few hours here and there, but it's better than waking up every hour.  I only sleep through the entire night once every 5 years or so.

I have a lot of trouble with restless legs. It sounds funny, but it's absolute torment sometimes.

I've had that myself, and it's some annoying shit.  No matter what you do with your legs, you just can't get comfortable.  There are certainly worse problems you can have, but RLS is a real bitch.

Yes, this is my case.  My doctor said I need to take more calcium/magnesium, and taking it before bedtime calms down my RLS and let's me have a good night's sleep while I obey doctor's orders.

analog kid

I was put on an antipsychotic by an unscrupulous doctor. Was on it for about six years. It sucked, but I didn't have to think about insomnia a single night. Now that I got myself off of it, I can't sleep worth a shit, and am always groggy to deliriously tired. As a side effect of the drug, my teeth will probably chatter for the rest of my life and the drug damaged my brain's ability to regulate my body heat, so I have extreme heat fluctuations at random times, like a menopausal woman.

coaster

I've tried melatonin. I've also tried regular otc sleeping pills. The pills don't always work, and if you don't fall asleep after taking them, you'll feel groggy as hell. I have RLS too, but its not really that severe. Usually for me, the insomnia gets worse before it gets better. I'll go two or three days, maybe more, with little no no sleep. Then nod off for an hour or so, and wake right up. Its the most frustrating thing not being able to get a full nights sleep. The one thing that seems to break the cycle for me is alcohol, which makes me feel like shit because it affects REM sleep. 4 solid hours is a good night sleep for me.

Zircon

I'm surprised that so many have problems like this - and with the legs in particular. Have any of you with the leg problems sustained a back injury in your life? Are your hamstrings tight (not so good)?

This is the first time I have posted on this topic.

The thing today that has annoyed me:

Logging in and seeing many, many posts made on the Art Bell thread.  Getting all excited and clicking on the thread, and then discovering that it is not about updated Art Bell information at all.  It is about two different personalities dueling virtures at each other.

No updated Art Bell info. at all.   I sink into depression.

What new info are you hoping for?  He's retired, he's not coming back, and that's that.  Not much to see here, except for his occasional Facebook updates.
