Constantinople is so much a better name than Istanbul.

Well, that's the name of the city during this time period.

I've always wanted to dramatize the fall of Constantinople in 1453 in a novel. Don't know if I will get to it, but it seems like a no brainer as far as a story.

I would read it before you even wrote it.

Historical fiction. I once read an account of the conversion of the Hagia Sofia to a mosque. An Imam was literally on the pulpit reading the shahada thereby converting it instantly into a mosque while the orthodox priests were still holding a Christian service to save the city. It got bloody.

That Hanussen photo (number 4 on the page) is pretty damn awesome.

Technically it was Istanbul. Foreigners just called it Constantinople until the Turks said stop doing that in the 30s. Some places I believe still use their own name.

Was that the crusade where they hired a Venetian fleet to take them to Jeruselum, but the Venetians pulled a fast one and took them to Constantinople because that was Venice's enemy at the time?  (It may have not been those cities)

It's the same word anyway, Istanbul is just a corruption of Constantinople.

Compelling argument.
Ok Having spent a 1/4 of my 47 years in the Near East . There is an underpinning of NASDP that crept into the Arab / Persian Culture . Add to it the natural enmity of Jews . Now when a Strong man arrives they must pick their Tribe in Iraq through fortune of Birth .  Thus you get the Tikriti Tribe having more weight than Religion . IE Saddam a Sunni and His second in charge was A Christian . Both From Tikrit. You must Rule Middle Eastern Countries Culturally as a very Strong man . You will be deposed if you do not internally . Look to the House of Saud for and Example still there . Like I said this is Too Long to get into Here , plus Boring !
