RIP Bugs.  :'(

An absolute classic show that I just listened to prior to MITD starting while I was creating the trailer I did highlighting classic calls. One of my favourites.

That's a shame, I was hoping he would get him back on one more time. He did have a couple of buddies who were out there with him (Bird Dog and Jim, as I recall) so perhaps there is still a remote chance to revisit it. He always sounded a bit fake to me but Art insisted he was the real deal. He was a real good ol' boy, you could almost hear the banjo music in the background.

Kind of explains Art's un-Friday-like mood. RIP Bugs.

Would be interesting if the map turned up. Possibly earth-shaking.

That's terrible news! :(

I'm going to listen to the old show today. :-\

Didn't Art lose the map and instructions during a move? I thought radio personality Ed Hale claimed to have been Bugs and that federal agents forced him to show them where the remains were and the bones were removed. It's much too convenient for my liking. Listen to him explain it himself in this audio clip (7 minutes long):

https://web.archive.org/web/20100613070408/http://theregulator.net/neonzx/edhale/ed-hale-bigfoot-2009-01-05.mp3

As far as I know, Ed Hale is still alive so either this guy was lying or Art has misinformation. Although comparing the voices of Bugs and Hale makes me think they're one and the same.

Officially, he lost the Bugs map but he has strongly hinted he still has the documents.

Hey, I caught some of Ground Zero the other night and Clyde interviewed this "Don't go to the light! The light is a trap" guy who claimed to be a definitive expert or something -- I don't know; I was half asleep. I thought of Art, though. Could be someone for Art to interview sometime in the future. I guess I should get his name ... hold on ... "investigative journalist Makia Freeman."

And RIP, Bugs. May you know the ultimate truth about Big Foot now.

If there IS some kind of an afterlife (I go back and forth), I hope I'll at least get all of my deep questions answered, like "Who really killed JonBenet Ramsey?" and "Aliens? Show me all of them via a giant celestial slideshow now, please."

Especially one of the author's of "Weird Kentucky" Jeff Holland who, people remember but nobody can find, had a show with Art (or at least a longish segment) about "feral humans." But it exists nowhere in the great archive and references to the show online are sparse. But I, and others, swear we heard it.....

I'm in contact with him. He does not have the show and even asked me if I had it, but I also failed to record it when it was available, so now we're screwed. It appears to have been deleted from the archive.

Also, he wasn't "one of" the authors of "Weird Kentucky" - he was *the* author.

Some of us think that Art must've gotten mad and destroyed the show on purpose (?).
He and his webmaster Keith Rowland were the last who had it. They either lost or destroyed it.

Also, I don't know why "nobody can find him" - he's readily available if you know where to look.

Thanks for the update. Well, at least we have confirmed that there was a show and we weren't "mis-remembering" things. I can't see why Art would be mad to purposely delete the show- unless something happened on that show that I forgot about. More likely it is still in iHate's archives or was just lost during transitions.

The live show was broadcast August 18, 1997.  There was one replay on Oct. 6, 1997.
It was on the show archive for a few years until around 2000, when they revamped the site and deleted it, so there was a couple of years when it was possible to record the real audio stream (but it was not downloadable).
I heard at least half the broadcast.  Jeffrey made up a web page on-the-fly and read off the long string of a URL, tripod.com with a tilde even.
He was the only guest on the show who had never before published a book. He was able to secure a book deal (with Weird U.S.) partly as a result of this appearance.  The way he came about getting on as a live guest was the original guest scheduled for that night bailed all of a sudden, so Art asked Jeff if he could do the show; he had sparked interest with Art in the e-mails he had sent about feral humans, as the possible link to Bigfoot.
Art opened the show with an anecdote about a feral cat hanging around his house outside.
A couple weeks ago someone on twitter asked Jeffrey if he had a copy; he suggested I might have it, but had to admit I didn't either and was wondering if he had it.
Art and Keith have both ignored questions about the program, leaving us to wonder if they destroyed it on purpose or deleted it accidentally, or just don't want it out anymore.
To this day it remains, perhaps, the only show during that time that is no longer available anywhere in anyone's archives.

Why the unwarranted hostility towards Art and Keith. Just because two people who are extremely busy producing a live show 5 nights a week haven't personally answered your question isn't an admission of guilt of the crime against humanity that you are accusing them of.

You are making out as if they purposefully deleted just that show as a personal vendetta against your friend. Are you aware about how many classic shows there are that are missing?

Even if they had the show in their personal archives, which they probably don't, they no longer own the rights and could not publicly share it.

I sense much butt hurt in you.

If you have access to your buddy's contact details and he wants a gig on Art's show then either post it here for Art and Heather (Art's producer) or contact Heather at producer@artbell.com

I believe bugs was outed a few years back. Apparently some  guy named ed hale who made racist videos on youtube and tried to run for congress or something. It would be easy to find on google, but I am lazy. Sad hes gone though. He had a decent story to tell. I don't want to talk bad about someone who can't defend himself, but its common knowledge on the internet.

Yes, I am going to sound like a complete asshole.  And, perhaps I should be called an asshole for what I am about to say.  So be it.  I hate Art's completely contrived "let's make a debate" shows.  Friday night's show was an example of how this type of show is so boring I'd rather watch someone who is watching paint dry.  What's wrong with just going to open lines?  Some of the best shows Art ever did came from pure open line nights.  The "jury" and "let's make a debate" shows suck, period.  I'm not saying that Art sucks, but the disjointed format hobbled together to make those shows make me double check to see if I accidentally tuned in to Dave's show.  Don't take me wrong.  I love everything else that Art is doing.

I challenge you to an on air debate sir, regarding whether or not you are an asshole for not enjoying the debate format.

One really has to admire a man, willing to actually put it all right on the line  ;)

I sort of agree. I want to hear Art talking to callers, not callers talking to callers. The debate show is like a completely different radio show being hosted by two irrelevant people I've never heard of.

+1

I like that Art wants to get callers/fans into the experience by trying different things, but I mirror your sentiment.

Exactly.  Pepper in technical problems with Skype and clueless "callers talking to callers" and you've got total, unadulterated boredom.  Going on and on and on and on about "umm i got my information from Youtube" fifty thousand times makes listening for any length of time a challenge indeed.

Morgus

I'd like to hear more special call in lines on open lines nights instead of the caller debates and truth&trash.
We had time travelers, now how about the other great special lines like Area51 employees/whisteblowers, anti-christs, aliens, etc?

ShayP

Oh...in regards to the "jury" shows (Truth or Trash)...I enjoyed them way back when.   These types shows can get better when everyone realizes how it's supposed to work.  I hope.

I hate to say it but I more or less agree.  The jury and debate formats are kinda boring.  I'd much rather have traditional open lines with a hotline number for the night's topic.

Hell yes.  I'm not paying for access to listen to Anonymous Listener A blather all night long to Anonymous Listener B.  It is contrived.  An entertaining debate is between two well-prepared experts who actually provide riveting entertainment.

Morgus

The good onair debates have been between two expert guests, not callers, like the one 20 years ago between Richard Hoagland and Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell on the moon anomalies.
