WORKSHOP for FAILED CALLERS (Is this you?)

Started by anagrammy, May 07, 2011, 08:54:01 PM

anagrammy

For the last few weeks we have been calling, calling, calling.  Either the screeners are hep to our vibe or they are using all paid callers.  Even on nights when there are mentally ill and LAAAAME callers, we are not getting our shot.

So--we need some coaching.  Have you been a caller on Coast?  Can you start filling in the blanks for us?  What happened with your call, how many people did you talk to, what did they like/not like about what you told them you wanted to say, and MOST IMPORTANTLY,

What did they tell you to say.  We need to sharpen our act, here.

Some posters on other threads think we have a mole here and, by implication, that's why our calls are not being allowed.  I have a question about that:  how would they know?  I can understand how they would know who I am because my email address is my logon here.  But what about Lurker and others?

Any ideas?

Ana

Scully

Do we know that any Coast Gabbers have actually tried calling in recently, Ana?

We don't seem to be a terribly shy group.  Why haven't some of the braver among us taken up this gauntlet?

But don't look at me.  I'm a craven coward.  ::)

I guess it is possible there is a mole here.

I think it is more a numbers game though. Even though we consider noory in the same class as a used tissue, many still want to share their...thoughts ideas time.

As to getting past a screener, for other talk shows describing yourself as someone with experience on the subject matter usually gets you to the head of the line. But this is noory land so the normal rules of space and time may not apply. So I would try the sycophantic approach: OH I have been listening to George for a long time and it would be a great honor to talk to him, I really want to thank him for changing my life with workers in the light and was hoping he would just talk to me, it would mean so much.

See? This is why I'm an Onan fan. It is 5:31 am here on the West Coast.  I got up to cook and, because I'm a Gab addict, I had to peek while my coffee is perking and now you have me LOLing already.

I'll tell you why I don't call in --"You seem to be a nice enough person but just NOT a radio host becau--CLICK.  UFO Phil kicks in.
I call back (yes, syncophant calling from other number). The other day you said a person went to the dentist for AMNESIA-- UFO Phil.

I don't think anybody would get in with straight out criticism.  I was thinking maybe a followup question, like, "What did GUEST mean when she said the towers were hit with a destruction beam?  Didn't we all see planes hit the buildings and we say them implode?

or

When GUEST said he met a hybrid, you said he would be scheduled to return to tell us what the hybrid said about growing up on Orshamu.  When is that interview coming up?

or

What happened to Art's Parts?

I called into coast once, like 11 years ago and successfully got on the air. It was during the Mike Siegel "era" so you can imagine how easy it was. Phone rang right away, (in fact hearing a ring, I hung up convinced that I had dialed a wrong number. I was really expecting a busy signal).

The screening process was very simple, just like any other talk show really. I talked to one person... related what I wanted to ask the guest about... put me on hold and I was on the air about 15 minutes later. Now that was 11 years ago so maybe things have changed.

I've screened thousands of calls at my station in the last 7 years. Here's what I would suggest. Don't say anything that gives the screener the impression that you are going to "stir up the pot". Some shows love that sort of thing but C2C has always been more relaxed. So saying "What did the guest mean when he said..." might mean that you don't get on. Rephrasing the statement "following up on the guest's earlier statement about..." might increase your chances.

Having personal experience with the subject matter or having something to add to the conversation is always good. However, acting as an authority figure could backfire. Nothing bugs me more than when someone calls in saying they are an expert on the subject being discussed. And when they get on the air, they want a huge chuck of airtime as if they WERE a guest.

My suggestions, follow the call screener's lead (Where are you from", what is your name?, what's your question?). Have one or two quick points, and demonstrate to the screener that you can get those points across in a timely manner. Hosts hate having to drag points out of people over a 3 minute period.

Of course you could always call Art, he doesn't use screeners.... Oh wait!

Hopefully this helps

Didn't I read on here somewhere that Noory has a 30-40 second delay? If so, that has catastrophic meaning to us who want to call in and call out Noory. I bet when Lisa or "Tommy" read this they'll increase it to a full minute.

Even Phil Hendrie had a 20 second delay, I remember him talking about it.

I think the actual meaning of that statement is how long it takes a thought to form and travel to his mouth.

You're giving him way too much credit.

Yeah imma generous guy, like that.

anagrammy

You know how they teach you in karate and judo to use the opponent's weight against them?  We know that Noory is uneducated and lacking in cultural IQ.  Why not ask questions which bring that out?  If he is in charge of the kill switch, he won't even get it.

Does his support staff man the kill switch or does he?  I hear him abruptly cut off someone for, say, UFO Phil like the other night.  That was a time constraint, I believe, but I am wondering if he is doing it or is it don for him?

If I were management, the last person I would want manning a kill switch is someone who doesn't know Giza from Gaza and can't tell you without a calculator whether a person who was 50 in 1950 is still alive today.

I don't think it would take Noron 30-40 seconds to come up with a reply, as he uses the same ones over & over.

Makes ya wonder if he keeps score on how many "Wow", "Amazing", "is it a portal?" etc are used each night.

We could definitely keep count on Friday Night Countdown, provided we kept the liquor supply up!

I just had a thought (ok quota filled for another month).

Does anyone remember the prank that (think it was) Stern started. Someone would call a radio show and start to discuss the current topic and would blurt out penis?

WellI was thinking we could get a schedule of upcoming topics. Then call in  and toss out GNS. First by asking if the guest was aware of some new research. For instance a guest is talking about organic foods and the caller asks if they are aware of gluten nucleotide strings called gns for short.

well its a thought.

anagrammy

So you're thinking of pranking with a code that only us gabbers would know?  (I like how you think).

That would be a great way to identify yourself because we will not know you from "Now on East of the Rockies it's Claude"

i have $100 and tons of prestige for ANYONE who can get on air (on coast to coast am, that is) and say, "coastgab.com."  keep in mind, it MUST make it to air in order for me to pay you... and you must apprise me of your intent to call the show beforehand so that i have some means of validating your claim.

i'm pulling the checkbook out of the drawer now.

any context whatsoever.  it simply has to be intelligible.  you get $100.

MV/Liberace!

to clarify:

if you are going to call coast to coast am and say "coastgab.com" for the purpose of receiving $100 from me, you must first message me to say what name you'll be using on the show and what town you'll say you're calling from.  this is how i'll know who to pay.

MV/Liberace!

oh, and there is no expiration date on this offer.  it also doesn't matter who is hosting the show, but george is preferred.

Don't mean to be a wet blanket here.  No one would enjoy our getting a hail-mary pass with this more than I would, but that 30-40 second delay would give Noory plenty of time to edit out such a tiny input.

OR, perhaps you don't think Noory knows what coastgab.com is about?  Even though we think there are moles aplenty reading here?  ???

who knows.  be creative.  and persistent.

It would be cool if saying "Coastgab.com" became a common event on C2C. It could be like the mid 90's when every cable network covering a breaking news tragedy, every call-in talk show, every home shopping network were deluged with daily "Baba Booey" pranks.

"West of the Rockies, go ahead.."
"Hi George, honor to speak to you. Will the Trilateral Commission ever address the issue of...COASTGAB.COM"

i'll need to dry my eyes just thinking about it.

Michael == Since this is a standing offer, you should not require advance notification.  If I decide to do this, for example, I may wait on the line and never get on the show two, three times, having advised you in advance each time.  There are enough of us on streamlink to verify that for you and send you a clip offline to collect.

By the way I'M A DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER watcher myself and recognize the Dog brilliance here.  Remember the time he offered that one loiterer in the mall a hundo for info and the guy turned him DOWN?  Said, "In Hawaii, bra, hundred's nuthin, eh?"

but what if someone sends me a clip of you and says it's them in a bid to snag your $100?

I could pm you ahead of time with my plan--date nonspecific.  In fact, I'll do it right now.  Anybody else would be hardpressed to explain how they came up with my unpublished exact same plan.

I think there is a mole. It's also likely the people behind the scenes know we're here.

maybe there is, and maybe there isn't.  i don't doubt for a second there are people at premiere who read this forum, if only to ensure copyright "compliance."  assholes.  anyway, i wouldn't break a sweat over it or anything, though.
