THIS NEWS JUST IN:

Glenn Beck's production company is now forming a partnership with former Premire Radio Network's President Kraig Kitchen's Los Angeles company called Sound Mind LLC. This from the Glenn Beck's own website, this added to the statement that Beck misses Art Bell on the air. We know of the Kitchen/Bell connection, could this be the "in" to bring Art Bell back? Time to watch Las Vegas Beck affiliate KDWN-AM 720, the old Bell stomping grounds in Vegas. Beck is trying to create a new radio network called Mercury Radio Arts, in association with Premire. This may end all association of Premire with Clear Channel. This news was released at 3:30PM this afternoon Pacific Time. Beck's line-up of stations may become the new MRA Radio Network! Is this Art Bell's vehicle? I hope so!!!!!!!
the whole beck angle sounded like a crock to me earlier... now i'm scratching my head.  this could become interesting.

as a side note... the link to the coastgab stream has been removed from the "external links" section of the c2c wikipedia page.  it still exists on the art bell page.  wonder who did THAT.

RoadDog

Oh SHI-! Though, to be honest, at this point, being a part-time fatalist, I think I may not hold my breath just yet.

I think what I have been trying to say, just way too subtly for any good purpose, is that I have always considered Art Bell to be one of the ultimate debunkers. Personally, I consider that the ultimate goal of skepticism, but you folks aren't mind readers.(or are you...? :o ) That's what I was referring to with my giving them enough rope comment. The coolest thing about it, was that he never managed to lose his cool and go "AAAA HA!!!!!" on air. Sometimes that quiet little "heh heh", yes, but always the consumate performer.

Off topic: I have been using, almost exclusively, IRC to communicate, online, for the last three years, so I am used to a dramatically different style of text based communication. I was actually a bit surprised there isn't an irc channel for this site when I found it. Real time is always easier for exploring and explaining, imho.

ArtBellFan

I don't think Art was a debunker RoadDog, he always put the information out there for us to discern, he always said we shouldn't take his word or his guests word for anything, it is our responsibility to do the research, that is exactly what I did and still do.  He certainly was a skeptic but hey nothing wrong with that, he was not a skeptic about everything, most times he let us know where he stood.

One of the things I liked about Art is that he didn't tell what to believe.

i agree with you, real time certainly is fun.  however, there are a couple of problems.

1) it would decrease the amount of participation in the forums.

2) none of your comments/musings/observations/witticism/creativity would be preserved.  most of the people here put a lot of thought and intellect behind their posts, and i hate to think those efforts wouldn't be saved for future enjoyment by all.

3) we actually have tried an integrated IRC chatroom in the past, and nobody used it (with the exception of the guy who set it up).  there is a subset of probably 5 different reasons for that.

i'm in total agreement about the fun of real time chat, though.  i just hate to see the forums cannibalized in any way, and that seems like an inevitable result if we were to integrate real time chat in any form.

TO MV:
I think we're just starting to see the "Bell" Muscles flex! We all know what happens when that occurs, Dr. David Banner / Art Bell! Interesting name for the new network, Mercury Radio Arts, I can see the promotions now, "You cannot have Arts without Art!". Of course Art will hate it but laugh along!

And it's why Knapp gets so little love here.

Are you suggesting the Knapp is a little too serious? If not, could you please elaborate?

Fascinating. Let's hope this is going to be all true. If Art comes back and Noory has to go head to head with him, Noory will be off the air within 30 days.

Interesting, could you provide a link to this story?

What a team that would be, Alan Corbeth, Kraig Kitchen and Art Bell.

FortRock

The only person I've tried to contact (I've tried at least 8 calls to him, and left messages 3 times) is Alan Corbeth. Now I THINK I know why I cannot get ahold of him! If it's Art Bell, Alan Corbeth, and Kraig Kitchen teamed, George Noory better pack his bags for St. Louis! Here's that URL requested:

http://www.glennbeck.com/2011/01/05/betsy-morgan-joins-mercury-radio-arts/

Betsy Morgan by the way is selected President of the new MRA Radio Network, she's formerly with Arianna Huffington's production company. As you remeber Art quoted positivly Huffington when he DID discuss politics.

You are dreaming Fort Rock...

Thanks for the link.

I've worked in the media business for most of my life.  Alot in radio. What you say rings true, all though I have no personal knowledge of the facts you lay out.  But it is apparant that there will be screening of all calls on coast to coast.  I just wish Ian Punnit would take over.  Tired of George Noorey and his non confrontational approach to the show.  Just is blah, blah, blah now.

Clear Channel, please fix this show!

HumanBeing

Fort Rock...Dreaming indeed  :D
But thanks for the info Fort Rock... it is interesting to read  ;D
We can only dream that Art decides to return and crush SNoory in the ratings.. I'd love nothing more  :P

I posted this over in off-topic yesterday, but it's appropriate here because of the Beck/Kitchin news:

http://www.coastgab.com/index.php/topic,2189.0.html

In short, Beck is being dropped by New York City's WOR due to 'low ratings.' I'm sensing something going on here with Clear Channel. Beck, like Bell, has a big enough caboose that it doesn't need to be attached to someone else's train.

Anyone following Savage knows he's suing his syndicator, Talk Radio Network. Savage and Beck would be a potent combo, but given his active, open disdain for Beck I can't see a partnership.

I sense a lot of personalities trying to control their own futures by creating their own network. It may not be a direct analog, but many musicians/songwriters do this by creating their own record labels.

Despite wishful thinking, Noory isn't going anywhere. He benefits by Rush's presence on CC. If a station wants Rush, they're pretty much stuck with Noory.

An interesting article from Oct 2010, quotes Kitchin, relevant to this thread:

Talk radio scrambles for new talent http://bit.ly/fI7uMh

Quote"The top talk-radio hosts are not replaceable; it would be like trying to replace a best friend," said Kraig Kitchin, the former president and COO of Premiere Radio Networks and founder of management firm Sound Mind.

"It's hard to duplicate a unique personality," added Michael Harrison of Talkers magazine, an industry trade paper that boasts 10,000 subscribers who pay $75 a year.

Maybe if talk radio talent is irreplaceable... you lure the talent out of retirement. Ok, I'm done with shameless speculation for today.

Finally got a response from the coast site:

Mitchell,

Art Bell decided he no longer wished to do live C2C shows, and asked that his name be removed from the host listings, accordingly. Classics and Somewhere in Time shows will continue as is. If you wish to cancel your subscription, just let Customer Service know.

I love that part. Summed up 80% of us. And the super passive aggressive "just let customer service know if you wish to cancel your service." ::) ::)

Since that hour will only be sent over the Internet by Beck's production company, I am guessing that Premiere would have zero control over it.

If you think Art Bell was popular right before the Mike Siegel era, think how popular Art Bell would be if he had Beck's promotional machine behind him.  And if this speculation is true, then if the contractual stuff could be worked out, maybe Art could sometimes substitute for Beck on the radio when Beck is on vacation."

Hot off the presses:

Kraig Kitchin joins Mercury Radio Arts

http://www.glennbeck.com/2011/01/05/betsy-morgan-joins-mercury-radio-arts/

Anyone want to bet against me about Art Bell joining up with Glenn Beck after reading that? :)

OmegaMan

Just found this forum (wish I'd seen it earlier). Like some of you I noticed that C2C had removed Art's shows but I never received a response from my email asking why he was no longer listed, so I canceled my subscription. I've just started listening to the continuous AB streaming I found here that MV offers--thanks so much!

I had hoped that George would grow into the role that AB vacated, but I just don't find him enjoyable to listen to, nor do I find most of his guests very compelling or credible--or they're just AB retreads. If I were to choose a better host I'd probably pick Ian, in that he seems passionate and usually does his homework before a guest comes on.

Anyway, it's exciting to hear of the possibility that Art may return, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm afraid it just may be time to move on. But I'll keep checking back here just in case, while munching on Krispy Kremes and drinking leftover eggnog.

Found a thread from 1999 about Art Bell on a website I frequent. Interesting to see the time before Noory.

"PABellFan

I am also a big Glenn Beck fan. Beck does his three-hour terrestrial show each day (accompanied by internet-only video) followed by his sidekicks doing an internet-only hour from noon to one EST. Beck also does a lot of his own video programming with his GlennBeckTV internet thing, and seems to want to branch out/broaden his horizons a bit. Recently he announced that there will be a FIFTH hour of programming when his show resumes after the holiday on January 3rd. No info on a host, other than that the audience would be pleased. Not sure how this would pass muster with Clear Channel/Premiere, but there you go. Have at it."

*********************************************************************************

I am REALLY angry - that  PABellFan  thought of this before I did   ;D

I subscribe to Glenn Beck Insider Extreme, which means I would get to hear that Fifth Hour, when it starts.

Since that hour will only be sent over the Internet by Beck's production company, I am guessing that Premiere would have zero control over it.

If you think Art Bell was popular right before the Mike Siegel era, think how popular Art Bell would be if he had Beck's promotional machine behind him.  And if this speculation is true, then if the contractual stuff could be worked out, maybe Art could sometimes substitute for Beck on the radio when Beck is on vacation.

I think Beck's 5th hour was promised for sometime in first quarter 2011, so it might be a few months before we find out if this idle speculation is not so idle.

Haha, early bird catches the worm! I actually considered Dr Dean Edell as possibility too, since he just "retired" in mid-december, and while he's awfully liberal, he certainly shares Beck's libertarian bent.

To clarify, I agree Premiere would have zero control over Art, but wouldn't they wield quite a bit of leverage over Beck? If they saw this as a threat to C2C, I'm sure they'd be able to axe it right quick.

Also, to answer another post, I don't think Art would be doing politics - in light of the FCC and the political winds, it seems like Beck is broadening his horizons and setting up his own "broadcast" empire, so adding a voice like Art to Beck's "airwaves" wouldn't be all that odd.

And now you've heard the Kitchin announcement, so there you go. Curiouser and curiouser!

rkowna

This thread is great.  It reminds me of how I found Art.  I was a grad student at University of Chicago.  A professor of mine had a radio show on wgn.  HAd to listen, part of class, and then after this lunatic namd Ed Schwartz would come on.  A lot goes on, got hooked on his show (like Art but had Bill Cosby as a regular guest, really bizarre but I digress.)  Anyway, Ed leaves, and I am up all night studying.  Enter Art, and some guy who has a hole in his backyard that is infinite, and I am addicted. Have heard it all, from Hoagland to Malachy, from Major Dames to Dr. Kaku (the one guest who truly was a genius).

Mr Bell has earned the right to do whatever he wants.  If it is a clearchannel plot, he will survive.  If it is an Ian Punnett coup, Mr. Punnett will be issuing $100 trillion dollar bills when Art decides to devalue him.  If this is contract negotiations, you Mr. Bell rock the house.   If it is George asserting his authority, movebackandlet the man go through.  Art Bell is a legend.  If he wants to be heard, he will be.  Glad I found this forum.  You guys are keeping the flame alive.  Thanks for having me.

ArtBellFan

Welcome rkowna, have a question for you, who is  Ed Schwartz and approximately what date and year did you hear him, I just checked Art's guests on his CD and the Coast web site and there is no one listed with that name, what was the topic?

anagrammy

OK, Art Bell Fan, you have me laughing out loud in an empty room!  Loved your satire--not even the thrice-screened guests are on topic.

I miss the quality of introductions and the passion for a topic.  Here is a sample of Art introducing John Chambers, publisher of "Father Ernetti's Chronovisor; The Creation and Disappearance of the World's First Time Machine by Peter Krassa:

ART:  I began to get these rather obscure stories about this, and I have this INCREDIBLE romance with time travel and I went OMG the Vatican.  They have all kinds of secrets, they've got tunnels under the Vatican, they've got the third secret of Fatima that I'm still not sure they've told the real truth the whole truth about this.  They 've got power, they've got telescopes and in Arizona they went zooming by all this ecological problem that anyone would have to get a telescope--Vatican is fascinating.  So when I saw this article on the Vatican, I about went nuts, so I started doing some research and found..YOU!

(NOORY:  We have a special guest tonight, John Cambridge, publisher of Father Ernetti's Chromovisor, a kind of time machine thing)

The thing that really blows me away is that Art Bell could do this type of interview WITHOUT reading the guest's book. If you listen to the mpg, you realize Art knows so much about this topic, at least, that he could wing it:

ART:     What year was this?
GUEST: Mid-fifties
ART:     I wonder if it was modern technology merged with ancient technology
GUEST: (speculates re ancient wisdom)
ART:     Still, John, there must have been this moment....he (Ernetti) must started upstairs in the Vatican and said "Look, I'm a priest and I've invented a machine with the ability to look at the past, what does the Vatican want me to do?"
GUEST:  Likely he did something like that.  I'm sure the Vatican told him not to talk about it and not to tell people the Vatican had told him to stop talking.  Ernetti would not talk about it the last 15 years of his life. I got so interested in it because you begin to think about the implications of time travel ...the power it would bestow on the possesser--
ART:     But this is not the HGWells type machine where you actually physically go to the past; it is, nevertheless, a way of verifying the past.  So they went to look at the crucifixion of Christ and reportedly got visual and sound reproduction of the crucifixion of Christ.  Is that what you've heard?
GUEST: I know how improbable that sounds.  Ernetti claimed to have gone back and seen Christ dying on the cross and taken a photo and at aome point--he didn't release it himself, somehow it got out--the press got ahold of it.
ART:   Where is that photo?
GUEST: We reproduced it in our book.
ART:   WHAT! (you can practically see Art drop his cigarette) You reproduced the exact photo?
GUEST:  Yes, we did.
ART:   You HAVE that photograph?  Oh, John!
GUEST:  I better add that after a while, it seemed a fraud.  It seemed to be the face of Christ carved on a wooden cross in a small church in Italy...Ernetti claimed the wooden statue, the artist was inspired by a nun who had mystical visions of the crucifixion, so Ernetti said that she herself also had the ability to go back and see the crucifixion in a vision, so it was the same thing--
ART:   John Chambers is my guest, a time machine in the hands of the Vatican, what do you think? BUMPER MUSIC...

I realize I had a mental image of Art there in Pahrump with Ramona and the cats, and a different image of Art in Manila high in the sky in the Phillipines, there's the photo of his studio, he's real.  I have no visual in my mind when I hear George.  He announces he's "somewhere" and I realize all I know about him is that he commutes from somewhere to somewhere to do the show.  And there will be no surprises.

Tonight I have the time to lay out an argument why Art, if offered, will take the Mercury Radio Arts Network up on it's offer to put Art Bell back on the air. I will not base this on economics/dollars and cents logic, it has to do with my observations of the unique state of mind of Art Bell! I have been an observer of Art in a serious way since the first time I met the man at the oldest Art Bell Chat Club, in Portland, Oregon. This club existed from 1991 until 2000, and I attended every meeting, beginning it's third meeting, which was every other week. Art attended a dinner meeting with Ramona during a visit in 1994 at a time (because of Ramona's health) Art might have had to relocate the show for 6 to 9 months to the Portland area. Art is a lapsed member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Many times such lapsed LCMS people become prime targets for membership recruitment for the Mormon Church. Art has always in his Las Vegas era had sympathies for Mormons. Does anyone remember the roughly 15 minute on air lecture Art gave in the 1990's as to why he felt Momonism was intellectually superior to Evangelical Christianity? Do you remember the Pahrump girl who gave him the "desert of the sea" phrase? Her grandfather was a retired FBI agent, friend of Art's and Mormon! There is a Culture War going on that Coast has not been covering, except in the calls of resistance to a regular Coast Guest named Glenn Kimball, an Art discovery. Art has, since he moved to Vegas, been close to Alternative Archeologists who are trying to literally prove the truth of the archeological claims of the Book Of Mormon. He doesn't accept it all though! Here's how the battle lines shape up; Glenn Beck and MRA represent whom Art would want to be the winners, Clear Channel and Rush Limbaugh represent Evangelical Christians and should be the losers. Because of the way Rush dealt with the Mitt Romney Presidental Champaign, the LDS considers Rush to be an enemy of the Church. The HOT AIR in Art's Hamcam Statement can now be understood to be Clear Channel and it's minions including fundie George Noory. As you know, before I was an Art Bell fan (I did not like the Art Bell of the KDWN Political Talk era) I was a Nitecap. Herb Jepko was a Mormon, and broadcast from LDS Church owned station KSL AM1160. The www.nitecaps.net webite records a letter sent by Art Bell to the website talking about how when he was 18 he crossed America as a hitchhiker, and the Nitecaps keeping him company at night. Art was the only talk host to honor Herb Jebko on the night of his death, and used the Nitecaps as a model of how he would set up his radio show. Art has a vested interest who wins this Culture War. He will accept the MRA offer if issued
