Your Phone & other gadjets.

I like listening to the Spec Sheet. I don't always understand some of the deeper tech stuff that they cover but I like it just fine and hey, If I learn something about my computer or phone from those guys than great.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. (Laugh if you want) But I do like it as it is a step up from my old flip-up that I stuck with for years. I needed a better phone for taking PICTURES of my work to put on my company website. I also take before & after videos of my work.

What! in your opinion are the best phones for pictures and video?

I suppose being as nobody has answered this I will take a crack at it.  The thing is that you can argue almost anything when it comes to phones and a person who is an Apple fan will argue for Apple... Android fans will defend android.

Anyhow, my recommendation? A camera.

Yes, phones can take good pictures and videos.  However, look at the aperture and consider the physical size of the sensor and you will quickly conclude that to have pictures and video look professional the right tool ought to be deployed. (I assume that is the goal if you want to post it for work and for potential customers.)

Here is a link worth looking at.  It describes advantages of different sizes of sensors and there are some advantages to phones.  Also, take a quick look at the section "Pixel size: noise levels and dynamic range" after reading about the sensor sizes included in most phones.  It is an older article, but worth reading. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/digital-camera-sensor-size.htm

Anyhow, I will wait for an Apple fanboy to come along and argue that the phone is a superior tool for photographs and video... And the thing is that depending on the quality that you are demanding it may well be suitable.  Then again, the Galaxy S5 should be good as well (16 MP camera on them rather than the 8Mp camera that your S3 should have come equipped with.)

Nothing wrong with a S3 that would make me laugh.  Root it, upload a custom ROM, get rid of the bloatware and it is good to go for another several years...  take the money you would spend on a phone and invest in a camera...

Just my 2 cents (and being as Canada has banished the penny I have to round that figure down...)

Edit- looking at your pictures you should also look at the part of that article that shows how much area the smaller sensors have to crop (under the heading "crop factor".)  A camera phone is going to limit the amount of the room you are trying to fit in and IMHO it causes the picture to look "cramped."  Taking pictures or a room it would seem more important to get "wall to wall" shots rather than really high resolution shots of the center of the room.

That was another 2 cents amounting to 4 cents, so I get to round up to a full nickel!

If you want a quality photograph get a large format camera, or at least a 35mm SLR. If you want to take snapshots... does it really matter? I don't suppose anyone wants my Kodak Instamatic?

It does if you are posting to a company website and want customers to see it.  See the comment (that was edited in after your post) about cropping.  Look at the picture of the stairs.  The landing (actual floor) was cut out and the left side of the stiars cut off near the bottom for want of more sensor area.

You are right- for a throw away snapshot posted to twitter it really does not matter.  I also do not know that people are basing their choice of contractor on pictures.  But if that is the case, why not just carry on with the S3?  The 8MP camera should be fine for snapshots.  However, he seems to be looking for something more capable of producing a better looking picture (and my argument is that there is not a phone that would not produce severe limitations...)

If it's gotta be a phone. Nokia Lumia 1020
41MP sensor, optical image stabilization, ZEISS optics with a 6-lens design.
Display is 4.5-inch WXGA HD+ AMOLED (1280 x 760)
It ain't cheep though at around $400-$600.
Only works on GSM networks.
It uses Windows Phone OS.  :-[

DSLR camera may not be so bad after all.

Now that the camera question has been asnwered, can someone post a copy of their operators manual for the Fleshlight 6000?  I can't get it to stop making coffee for me afterwards.

Thanks for that.  Being bored on a late Saturday night I decided to ixquick "fleshlight 6000" for amusement.  I found a link to share with you about a $6000 sex doll.  The good thing is that you can make "her" coffee after you are done.  Also, for that kind of money, I assume it comes with a shiny, new, laminated owners manual (though the video does not make mention of that.)  It certainly seems like a step up from a fleshlight (though you may have more trouble explaining it away to your wife / girlfriend.)

I have to agree with you. Lots of sites have images of products that are obviously taken with a simple camera. And that seems to work well. My rather narrow judgement came from the opinion that good cameras can use depth of field and different exposures to obtain the best image possible. I haven't taken a photograph in almost fifteen years. I used film, now I think digital is much more common.

I have had a camera in my phones since they became the norm, and I think I have taken less than fifty shots in all that time.

And then there's this option...
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/09/ifa-2014-hands-on-with-sonys-ilce-qx1-interchangeable-lens-camera/

QuoteThe ILCE-QX1 is one of Sony’s slowly expanding family of lens cameras â€" it’s a small cylinder that you can hold in your hand or clamp onto any flat-backed smartphone up to around 6 inches in size. It is unique from the other QX100 and QX10 lens cameras and the other new releases, though, in that it’s closer to a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera than it is a compact, with a huge APS-C imaging sensor and Sony E lens mount.
