the hatred leftists feel for this guy only serves to augment my belief in his greatness.

in an era of untested, inexperienced, naive leaders who grovel about the world apologizing for our existence while also accepting awards from foreign entities who seek to use such bestowals as a tool in affecting US policy... it's refreshing and hopeful to see a president who proudly and unapologetically traveled the world extolling our virtues.

where is the next real president?

It is going to take someone with guts and a solid, guiding philosophy.

that second "reagan jokes" video contains a joke where he talks about the russian going into the kremlin and pounding on the secretary general's desk.  that speech was delivered in cape girardeau, mo where i live.  i saw reagan that day.  he waved to me, and it was an amazing experience at my age.  i was in the 3rd grade.

What a great memory of Reagan to have.  I am old enough to have had the privilege to vote for him twice.  I was in the Infantry when we invaded Granada, but did not have the honor of being deployed.  Army pay was $375 a month when he started office.  Needless to say he could not stand for the number of soldiers living on food stamps and raised our pay to be more equalized with civilian compensation.

That's what he was all about, and what he wanted for everyone, despite his critics: Dignity - Honor - Love of Country.

i get really annoyed listening to people criticize reagan.  granted, i don't agree with everything the guy did.  however, it's the way people criticize him that annoys me, not just the mere fact that they do.

they always say he was just a b-movie actor, he was all image and no substance, that he was clumsy and demented during his presidency, or that he was out of touch with the common man.

that all seems so weak to me.

if people want to criticize him for iran contra, fine.  for budget deficits?  fine.  for violating state's rights by threatening to withhold highway funds if they didn't yield to federal standards?  fine again.  every president deserves to be honestly evaluated.  however, the evaluation of reagan by his detractors seems to have over the years been more about his style or how he was generally perceived than anything substantive.  despite some of my specific misgivings about the man, i think he was exactly what the US needed at the time.  he's what we need right now.  unfortunately, i don't think there will be another like him.

In some respects I believe that there would not have been a perceived need for Reagan without first having Carter.  Likewise, Obama may be preparing the way for someone with Reagan's type of leadership.

I was not, and am not, a fan of Ronald Regan.  I find it disturbing to see him painted as a hero.  That said, I would have been among those standing to applaud when he told the heckler to "shut up."  It's one of the few memories of him as a politician that makes me smile.

slipstream

Reagan knew when enough was enough.  He knew leaving the marines in Lebanon was a no win situation.  Such a wise man.

Ahhhh, yes.  But a dangerous memory in this NEW ORDER.  The photo, symbolic of the Republic, before the fall.
