Quote from: UnscreenedCaller on August 28, 2013, 07:58:37 AMI can remember when the Leopold and Loeb case was an anachronism, something so depraved and out of the ordinary that it called the crime of the century, and spawned multiple book and movie treatments. And now, depraved thrill killings happen just about every day. When I was in high school, we were assigned 'The Banality of Evil' by Hannah Arendt. I didn't understand it too well then, but now I do. People like the ones who beat that poor old vet to death or the Oklahoma jerks who wanted to kill someone should be culled from society for the rest of their lives, no chance of parole. After that, I couldn't care less what happens to them in prison.

In my own anecdotal experience, my contemporaries who served in Vietnam were overwhelmingly white, but most of them pre-empted the draft and opted for Air Force or Navy. Some did ROTC while it was still on campus, too.

Quote from: Up All Night on March 20, 2014, 10:09:24 PMA possible murder/suicide theory would be that the (crazy) pilot killed his co-pilot, disabled the transponders, etc, and programmed the plane on a flight path to nowhere in the Indian Ocean, that included going to an altitude that would kill everyone, including the pilot early on. The plane would eventually run out of fuel, and drop into the ocean, along with all of the (now dead) passengers.

Quote from: Ursamajr on October 10, 2013, 10:45:01 PMI experienced a bit of a time blip or jump or burp or something once... was riding an escalator with a friend. It was a barnes & noble in manhattan - 4 floors and every floor you get off and turn onto the next escalator. Open plan so you can see the floors as you ride up/down. we were going up to get off on the third floor and then all of a sudden we were on the fourth. No third. skipped it completely. We both looked at each other and without any words just looked at each other with a couple of "wtf?!" faces. To this day we both are pretty clear it was just some weird blip.

Too boring of a story to call and share with Art though.

Quote from: Walks_At_Night on April 18, 2016, 08:52:00 PMA little bonus baby update.  Perhaps some may recall my polling for advice on the young fellah that sits next to me at work.

Guy came into work today well around 10AM looking like hell and smelling worse.  He mumbled something about a rough
weekend down in Myrtle and got sick in his rubbish can. He went  home by 10:30.  He earned a new nickname today -
"Johnny Football" for his Manziel-ness.

In a fascinating development they announced a big new project starting soon.  By chance or by design
my employer has denuded each site so much that none can handle it on their own.  So we'll have Euro's, Aussies, China
and good old team USA pulling oars.  The lad will have his first real piece of work and lucky me will get to be his mentor.

To top it off, we'll have a nightly 10PM call with our good friends in the PRC.  I do believe that might cramp the boy's
nightlife - we shall see.  Only thing worst for him would be dealing with the Euro's - I think that call is like at 7:00AM.
I'd have rather pulled working with the Aussies because they are a hoot but I know the Chinese all too well.

If anything interesting happens, I'll keep the thread abreast of developments in an effort include some non-Senda
juiciness.  I work in a pretty uptight industry and this kind of shit really doesn't happen.  It has turned into a Springer
episode and can only get better until the inevitable crash happens.

Quote from: WanagoBleu on November 27, 2015, 12:06:19 AMmake sure it's well sourced and fresh. Old herb, or improperly prepared, will render it ineffective. Good and well made Arnica salve will help cut the pain. I trained at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in Bisbee AZ years ago. The owner, te late Michael Moore was a BRILLIANT herbalist. Miss him.

Matter of fact, while I was living in a mining shack there doing this work, I could get any radio signals in the hole I was in. But I could listen to Art over t he internet on my computer. Loved listening to him in the middle of the night.

Quote from: WastingMyPotential on July 29, 2015, 10:33:19 AMI moved  awhile back and when I was packing I found that I still have a 1/2 used bottle of "pizza punch". I tucked it away in a box and its now in deep storage for when the zombies attack, anyone else still have theirs?  Think its still any good? Doubt it, probably went bad a long time ago. To be honest I don't think that the "commercial version" was ever as good as the description Art gave after he discovered it with his wife but its still a cool Art Bell artifact.  Sure someone has the recipe, right, anyone???

Bring back the punch Art.  Or should I say: Art, thanks for bringing back the punch!

Dyna-X seemed to think so.

Quote from: Dyna-X on July 30, 2015, 03:46:54 PMAnyone who still has an original bottle has a "collectors item" but probably not the kind of thing you'd see for big figures at an auction house. Art has said in an interview that this is "Ramona's baby" and that he doesn't plan on re-releasing it.

However, don't despair - here is a recipe of what "Pizza Punch" really is - tweak to your personal taste:
Quality Virgin Olive Oil (base of it all that carries the flavor)
With dashes of:
Seasoned Red Pepper (don’t get too carried away unless you like hot)
Thyme
Cumin
Basil
Oregano
Crushed Garlic (possibly powder in the original - it definitely had garlic in it but no obvious signs of cloves)
Dried Onion
1 tbsp or 2 lempon juice
a dash of red or white wine

Let it sit for a week or two in the refrigerator

Quote from: West of the Rockies on January 19, 2013, 09:11:08 PMMy wife and I cut the cable when our daughter turned 3 (she's now 11).  It was a scary idea at first, but now when I see standard TV, I am astonished at how hateful and irritating so many of the commercials and programs are.  We get Netflix and have recently introduced our daughter to X Files (only the monster-of-the-week and alien-abduction episodes -- not the creepy serial killer episodes), Farscape, Monarch of the Glen (Anglo-philes that we are) and such.  One of the benefits is that she could not hum a Justin Bieber song to save her life.  I heard that the average American spends something like 9 hours a day in contact with various forms of media (TV, radio, internet, magazines, etc.).  Of those 9 hours, about 3-4 minutes are spent with actual books.  We've pretty much established the inverse of that figure in our house.  Of course, I suppose she may hate us when she hits the teen years, but for now, all is well.  :)

I know that my contact with the radio has dropped greatly since Art Bell left the airwaves.

Quote from: Who on January 28, 2015, 04:47:28 PMAn old cowboy went to a bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his whiskey, a young lady sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life on the ranch, herding horses, mending fences, and branding cattle, so I guess I am."

She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. As I watch TV, or even eat, I think about women. Everything seems to make me think about women."

The two sat sipping in silence. A short time later, a man sat down on the other side of the old cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian."

Quote from: Uncle Duke on August 08, 2015, 07:55:26 PMMy best friend died almost three years ago.  To the best of my recollection I've not dreamed of him since his passing,  until last week.  In the dream I remember recognizing him, and then asking why he was here.  With a bemused look, he told me he had come back to get lemons.....there were no lemons where he was. The next thing I remember was the two of us leaving a supermarket with a grocery cart full of lemons.  That's it......all I can recall.

My buddy was a bigtime beer drinker, but he did not drink liquor or mixed drinks. He also drank more coffee than anyone I've ever known, but never drank tea or iced tea.  Still not sure what to make of this, maybe I need to get on one of those dream analysis sites and see what lemons represent.
Quote from: whoozit on August 09, 2015, 06:32:58 PMI had a similar type dream.  Two years or so after a good friend died I was dreaming of a weekly poker game we used to attend.  All of the regular players were there. After the game had started my friend came walking in and asked if he could join in.  Everyone else was glad to see him and asked what had kept him.  I just looked at him with vague unease.  Of course there was an empty seat next to me and he sat down.  Normal conversation ensued while I just kept staring at him.  He must have noticed how uncomfortable I was and asked me what was wrong. I said something like "I seem to be the only one that knows you're dead".  He gave me a slow wink and picked up the last conversation we had.  I gave in at that point and enjoyed the short talk before I woke up.  It was a strange dream. I'm glad there were no lemons.

Quote from: Wiseman on May 08, 2015, 03:55:08 PMWhen I was a kid in California, I used to sit up at night with my small Dallas Cowboy football helmet radio, and tune around the AM band searching out distant stations.  I would write down the call letters and their location in a little logbook.  I was supposed to be sleeping.  My parents never caught me.

I found out recently that this is a hobby called "AM DXing".  It's just something that I've always done.  It's how I found Art in 1996.  I was spinning the dial slowly and there he was talking about ghosts one night.  I thought, Well, that's different.  I got hooked.

Someone above posted about the "magic in the static".  I know many of you can attest to listening with AM radios to C2C in the middle of the night with the static crashes, storms going on outside, weird AM radio noises, and how it added to the greatness of the show.  Me and my girlfriend would lay there in the dark and listen.  It was an quite an experience and one I'm looking forward to again.  An Internet stream just isn't the same.

I'll be listening on shortwave.  Thanks, Art.

I might've been the one to mention the 'magic in the static' but if not I totally agree. Though I don't think Art's shows ever got on SW, though I recall he mentioned trying to so during one show. I could be wrong. But AM was a lot better than the stream or XM for the reasons the poster stated above. Sucks that many new vehicles don't even have AM radios in them. And in some countries even all radio being cut off. A plot, I tells you. With radio THEY don't know who, or what, people are listening or where you are.

Quote from: PhantasticSanShiSan on June 17, 2009, 10:17:03 PMSubway uses the highest quality processed meat, and Quiznos uses the lowest.  I don't like either.  I used to like Quiznos when it first came to Toronto, but never liked Subway.  Now, I eat at local and regional places.  Nadeau's for cold subs & Philly cheese steaks , and Sandra's for steak & cheese subs, and fried bologna subs.
Quote from: Wizard444 on June 17, 2009, 10:21:31 PMWe have two Subway franchises nearby but no Quiznos.  I patronize the Subway on occasion out of desperation of wanting a quick fix to basic hunger.  Neither appear to be culinary delights in my book.  Fried bologna sounds curious, but good.

Quote from: WOTR on September 04, 2011, 02:22:34 PMSo they touched on the ants.  I would still like to hear a scientist or two discuss the fungi that infects ants, moths and certain other insects.  I like the jewel wasp turning the cockroach into a living incubator.  Would love to hear more about the parasites that make grasshoppers jump to their deaths into pools of water so that the parasitic worms can burst out of their thoracic cavity and reproduce.  Perhaps something about the parasitic worms that infect snails to force them into the open to be eaten by birds.  They could talk about another parasitic wasp that turns caterpillars into cocoon protectors through mind control.  I would even settle for liver fluke worms that control the behavior of ants...There have to be more of these situations than I know about... but it would mean a bit of research for the host.

I may be alone in this, but the idea of real parasitic mind control and behavioral influencing fungi sounds like a coast "issue."  It is real, provable, there are experts to interview and I really would find a half hour interview to be more interesting than rehashing zombies... I usually like Ian, but still can not bring myself to listen to last nights show (even if the topic of the fungi ants was brought up I have very little doubt that the science was ignored in favour of science fiction.)

art swears by the betamax, he says he has 10, and buys everyone he finds for parts.
