Quote from: starramus on June 03, 2018, 09:42:17 AMIn the beginning everything was free. I installed my system in the early 80s, and not cheap shit. I had Drake equipment, and a spun aluminum dish. I was a broadcast engineer at the time, and did all of the work myself. Wow it was the new frontier!

My dish still stands at my ex-house that my ex-wife received in the divorce settlement. I wonder if the receiver still works.

Quote from: paladin1991 on July 16, 2014, 04:54:41 PMCome on Stellar.  You can't save the world.  That's a job for the one and only.  You can keep preaching to the masses and a few will listen.  Fewer will grasp your message.  But keep on doing it, if that's your calling.
Some of us believe you.  Some of us know.   There is truly some heinous shit going down in these end times.

Stellar's the guy who's obsessed with the Voynich manuscript and heard voices telling him to ram another vehicle on the freeway. He also developed a serious case of Trump Derangment Syndrome.

Yeah, he was also pro-vax, so much so that he couldn't handle the angst and stopped posting.  It was either that, or possibly the book he wrote about messages being broadcast from outer space.

Also, my wife says that the dinos are hanging with Tupac and Elvis at some undisclosed location, probably with Art Bell. [Edit] She is high on post-operation pain meds.

Quote from: Juan on August 24, 2013, 07:09:30 AMI like the way Art holds a pen just like a cigarette.  At first, I thought it was a cigarette.
Quote from: basswood on August 24, 2013, 08:39:05 AMI thought it was a smoke too, it wasn't? Did he quit?
Quote from: steve0suprem0 on August 24, 2013, 03:25:25 PMi remember at least one attempt when ramona was still around, and i think another after airyn came along. i totally thought the pen was a smoke, too. i do remember him saying that he smokes a brand of long slender ultralights, and i think he also said they're associated with women. virginia slims?

vaguely related anecdote: when i got the art of talk from ebay, i ONLY read it in the garage while chain smoking. made my girlfriend do the same when she read it. i really wanted to be able to pull it off the shelf in a couple years and have it smell like art's  studio. now, i've been quit for 7 weeks, and the book just smells like a book.

He's likely in a nuthouse OR the NSA, MOSSAD, or some alphabet agency got him. Maybe he is being debriefed by Richard Alan Miller for some super-secret project even! Either way I admire, in a weird way, his passions/obsessions (as long as he doesn't hurt anybody,, or self and the road rage roadtrip etc was unsettling) and hope he is well and he will solve the 'manuscript' and the ET radio transmissions and various codes and mathematical what-not.

Quote from: stlcoastfan1985 on December 22, 2012, 04:02:46 PMA friend of mine was an ambulance driver involved in the capture of the D.C. snipers back in '02. He says they were sitting in the rest area where they found their car, waiting for the SWAT team to move in on them. He was in the driver's seat and had a government agent next to him. Before he knew what was happening, out of nowhere comes two completely black clad, military looking helicopters flying COMPLETELY SILENT. They hovered over the car and several dozen heavily armed soldiers/SWAT members repelled down and surrounded the vehicle. He says they flew low to the ground, about 20-30 feet or so, no propeller noise, no engine noise, no vibrations, NOTHING! Marveled by the whole thing, he said to the agent, "It's pretty amazing how they can hover silently like that." He claims the the agent replied, "I don't know what you're talking about."  :-\

Needless to say, he was laughing on the inside, but he says he'll never forget the sheer awesomeness and organized power of both the helicopters and the soldires ability to move in so quickly and capture the bastards. He said that he thought the so called "black helicopters" were only a legend, but after witnessing that historic event up close and personal, he was a firm believer for life!

Yeah, the black helicopters every once in a while in northeast Florida.  That's also the area where Chuck Harder lived, and I believe he was the first to talk about them on air.

Quote from: Stupid Robbings on December 23, 2019, 02:55:26 PMSocial Media is no substitute for genuine, professional journalism.  Unfortunately, The free press has effectively been bought and killed.  People don't have the resources that broadcast television and major magazines used to have, before the DoD unleashed the Internet upon the public.  Fahrenheit 451 is unnecessary, because everything online can be deleted, disconnected, or reassigned to an unlisted address.  When a blogger gets too famous, then the identity gets hijacked and proliferated with assertions in contradiction to the original, becoming a needle in a haystack of cow soiled straw.

Anyone can learn to be a professional journalist, but it's the height of arrogance to believe that it's simple and easy.  Now more than ever, it becomes most crucial for the reader to use the utmost discernment.  It takes journalistic skill, just to even read the news.

Quote from: Surmo on March 12, 2013, 12:21:43 AMMy "first time" was driving through New Mexico and Arizona late at night, on business, somewhere around 1995.  I don't even recall the show, and just remembered the voice and the intelligence.  Art was talking to an older, western fellow who was a regular caller, a loner who I recall later got cancer or some illness and died (anyone remember that guy, who lived in Art's neck of the woods, and was also a desert loner?).  It was just a feeling of comfort, listening to the two men talk, like pulling on comfortable clothes that fit just right.

I thought this was some local show (I'm from Michigan), and hated that I couldn't get it.  A couple of years later it popped up in the UP of Michigan, where I lived, and I've rarely known such joy since (a sad commentary on my life, but that's another story).

Quote from: suttercane on July 31, 2015, 11:58:59 PMOne trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Quote from: swordpoint9 on October 06, 2015, 02:34:46 AMOk Having spent a 1/4 of my 47 years in the Near East . There is an underpinning of NASDP that crept into the Arab / Persian Culture . Add to it the natural enmity of Jews . Now when a Strong man arrives they must pick their Tribe in Iraq through fortune of Birth .  Thus you get the Tikriti Tribe having more weight than Religion . IE Saddam a Sunni and His second in charge was A Christian . Both From Tikrit. You must Rule Middle Eastern Countries Culturally as a very Strong man . You will be deposed if you do not internally . Look to the House of Saud for and Example still there . Like I said this is Too Long to get into Here , plus Boring !

Quote from: MV/Liberace! on November 09, 2016, 09:12:29 AMi think it's a combination of things; american policy touches every corner of the world, our superpower status renders our political battles the "heavyweight" matches to follow, our mainstream media are expertly skilled at monetizing/promoting election cycles... i'm never shocked to see the level of foreign interest in our elections.
Quote from: Taaroa on November 10, 2016, 01:55:11 AMSpeaking as one of these non Americans interested in your politics, there are probably a few other points you can make:
1) Our election cycles are very quick and the personalities which are at the head of it are less important (in fact they get replaced often enough without going to election)
2) American elections are interesting and amusing to watch because really anything seems like it can happen, and they're very accessible thanks to your media.
3) It's a bit of escapism where we can throw support behind one candidate and feel like we have a horse in the race, while at the same time we are far enough removed that - whatever the outcome - there aren't likely to be direct/immediate effects (unlike our own elections).

You might also be able to say that thanks to the all pervasive American media and culture, a lot of people lose sight of the fact that they aren't American.

Quote from: TacoTuesday on March 26, 2016, 03:34:10 AMComparing weed to cigs is an apples to oranges situation that admittedly the scientific test I have read haven't addressed. Most cig smokers consume a pack or two a day, that is 20 to 40 cigarettes. I doubt most weed consumers don't even touch that many joints a day. When I used to smoke dope, it was usually in pipe form and still it was only a few bowls a day.  Of course there are abnormalities like the person that chain smokes a carton or and hippie that smokes a Cheech and Chong joint all day.

Quote from: b_dubb on September 11, 2010, 05:49:19 PMi live in a college town and i hear a lot of college kids and intellectual types ridicule christians and christianity but every other faith is treated with the utmost respect and sensitivity.  double standard?  yes.  and for all the talk about tolerance and diversity they are frequently just a bunch of posers.  a lot of 'Left' politics on campuses / college towns are just fashion.  challenge that view and you're ridiculed.  amazing how two extremes become almost indistinguishable

Quote from: TaoOfLuxLisbon on September 12, 2010, 04:19:59 PMLet's face it, that has everything to do with the fact that in America, when it comes to someone pushing religion down your gullet and pointlessly interjecting it into conversations, it's naturally Christians who are doing it the most, which is why people get so irritated at them. When's the last time a Muslim or Jew tried to convert you? Maybe in other countries it's different. It's like how I hate both the Red Sox and the Yankees, but because I live in New England I hate the Sox more because I have to hear Red Sox fans say stupid shit 24/7. If I lived in NYC, I'd be the other way.

Quote from: Rix Gins on January 07, 2023, 01:50:21 AMNobody could say 'burrito' like Art Bell.
He, contrary to many, said used pauses when speaking. Allow listeners to ponder, add dramatic effect, and perk up someone late listening to a scratching AM radio. That 'burrito' was epic. My personal favorite was one time he said "the Dental---pause----Mafia?" After someone had odd theory going on tangentially involving dentistry. And went to break after his comment. You had to listen. WTF a Dental Mafia!?
