The H2 channel has a good new show, America Unearthed.  They cover some interesting topics and last night the episode was on the Knights Templar.

Episode: Tracking the Templars

Scott Wolter noticed Hooked X appearing on many artifacts; Scott realized the symbol could be the key to understanding two of the biggest mysteries of all time; the Holy Grail and where it's hidden.

Repeats next Saturday, Nov. 30th, at 11:00 a.m.

They are going to start airing the 2nd season of that show in early 2014.  They must be re-running the first year episodes now to gin up interest.

Scott Wolter was a guest on Ian's show several years ago.  He wrote a book called 'The Hooked X'.

The book is about the Kensington Rune Stone.  From what I remember, a farmer in the Midwest (Minnesota?) dug this thing up in the late 1880s.  It was covered with Viking style Runes (symbols).  It was considered a fake, because everyone knew the Vikings never made it the North America.  The stone was kept in a local museum.

The runes on the stone included a date in the 1300s and told a story about some Norse explorers.  The reason it was made was to mark an event where some of them had left camp and returned to find the others all dead.

At some point an expert in runes looked it over.  There was one rune that was unfamiliar and thus the expert confirmed it was a fake.  It looked like and X with a little hook on the end of one of the corners, the Hooked X.

Sometime fairly recently someone else saw the stone in the museum and re-examined it.  After further research, it turned out the hooked X rune WAS a rune in use at the time of the date on the stone.  It was only used on a tiny island off the coast of modern day Sweden.  The fact that hardly anyone in the late 1800s was aware of that particular rune (due to it's use only in a small isolated region) - including the original expert called in to look at it - was what caused them to call it a fake.  Now since that rune has been confirmed to be real, but rare, it's now evidence that it is highly unlikely to be a fake.

If the Kensington Rune Stone is not a fake, it means the Norse were in North America hundreds of years earlier than when Eric the Red set up the colony at L'Anse aux Meadows in Greenland.

The reason Scott Wolter got involved is because he is an expert geologist and he was called in to confirm the age of the etched runes on the Kensington Stone. He concluded they were very old, and could not have been faked in the late 1800s, and his estimated age range included the date etched in runes on the stone itself.

Where the Templars come in is when they left France and disappeared, there is evidence they went to the lonely isolated island of... Gotland.  Since they were HQed at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the Crusades, here is some chance they had the Holy Grail, in addition to any number of other relics.  As the world's first bankers, they certainly had a vast trove of gold when they disappeared.  People are still looking for it, and some have speculated perhaps they sailed to the Americas to hide it.

There is probably a Wikipedia entry on all this.

From his detective work on the Kensington Rune Stone, Scot Wolter parlayed that into a show where he goes around the US looking at sites and relics that have been overlooked by archaeologists because they didn't fit with the rest of the historical 'facts' - the same way Norse in Minnesota 700 years ago don't.

I didn't think his shows were all that well done, but I love the premise.  I hope they improve in the 2nd season, but I'll be watching regardless.

Going through some boxes and found this stereoscope photo. 1889 Knights Templar parade in DC. Note also that the production was sold in foreign markets also. They look good in 3-D!

Looks legit. It has to be somewhere, right?

That must be it.  We need Dave Norway to confirm it, though.  Hopefully, he can give us an update on the Shroud of Urine, too.

Maybe there will also be some ancient Veda manuscripts also hidden in the cave. You know, the kind that were written in 'sand script.'

That tree in the foreground really makes the 'stereo' come out in the photograph.  Very nice stereoview!

My hope is they finally drain that weir. Dig it all up. Get down into the chamber deep in the ground. Open said chamber to find an oak chest. Break into the chest...No grail. No relics. No diamonds. No rubies. No emeralds. No nothing...except an ancient bust of the Dead Doctors Don't Lie Guy. With a 15% off coupon for Youngevity.

I can still make them work without a stereoscope.

Don't do it for very long or your eyes will stay that way.  ;)

A little fact I didn't know Oliver Wendell Holmes (not his son Jr the famous Justice) invented the most popular version of the stereoscope and purposely did not patent it so as to allow the masses to have entertainment also.

That is called free viewing.  Yes you can train the eyes to act like a stereoscope and when I was collecting stereoviews at flea markets and antique stores I would free view them to see if they were any good.  All stereoviews were not created equal.  Some had more stereo effect than others.

Yup, I learned to do it during a surveying course.

This is almost exactly like the reason why I invented the least most popular version of psychokinetic shielding and purposely did not patent it so as to allow myself to avoid the necessity of getting an additional security clearance.

Also, I'm illiterate and can't fill out patent applications. Slurp.
