Next open-lines we need to take a pool on what the low point will be.

Does anybody have a clue as to what he was referencing aside from his torsion fields for interstellar space flight?

Does he think we're going to get there by astral projection or something?

Is confused the right word?

Evidence-based methods of interstellar space travel shot down in 19.5 seconds. :D

That was fun.

Hey guys and gals.

I've just made it back home this evening. I've been out most of the day.
First of all, thanks for all of the well wishes. I apologize for being off-the-air tonight, but family health comes first.

Very exhausted. We'll save the in-depth discussion of "belief" for Friday.

Tomorrow we'll be welcoming guest Matt Smith of Litchfield County Computer onto the program.

While I don't like generally using the term "expert", well, to me, he really is. Matt was also born with cerebral palsy, and has overcome huge obstacles to be able to operate his own solo computer company. Here's an article on him from a few years back:
http://patch.com/connecticut/woodbury-middlebury/from-cerebral-palsy-to-computers-matt-smith-litchfiel23eda29ee6

He's also a member of the board for the Connecticut Council for Developmental Disabilities.

He and I have known each other for close to 20 years. We encountered and published our first security exploit together in 2002 about a denial of service vulnerability in Parachat.
https://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2002-1849

We'll be discussing information security, infrastructure, history of hacking, and more. At some point the discussion might also turn to classic cars (i.e. - he drag races his fully restored '64 Chevelle).

Will post the official guest bio for the show page tomorrow. See you all then!

I agree with you Starr. I have made a few critical negative comments about MITD on the MITD thread but mostly out of frustration and disappointment for a show that I wanted to support. But I don't think it's fair to those who are fans of her show to go to her thread and constantly trash her, day after day for months. And it IS a waste of time better spent on shows you actually like and want to support. Better to spend one's energy in a positive direction.

To that end I did make attempts to offer sincere criticism to Heather but it went on deaf ears. Other hosts, even ones from bigger/more popular shows, would at least thank me and offer a reply of some sort. Amy here is in another league in that regard. I feel as though I'm a part of the show's success and creation, like a shareholder, and that's fun and exciting. Everyone is different though and that's fine. I just prefer this way of doing things to MITD's.

I'm glad you see it that way. As always to listeners, I see the show as your show. Everyone is a stakeholder.
Accepting feedback is any part of a participative planning process.
Learned a long time ago it's not easy to sit people down with unique ideas to plan if the planners become an authority figure, disconnected from the needs of the participants, giving something for participants to launch blame and discontentment at. Whether you realize it or not, you're a member of a participative planning process when you participate in this thread or send feedback through any other means. I'm both facilitator and participant though in this instance. So are you. If you're a stakeholder at any level, your opinions should be valued. All forms of broadcast media get it wrong when they don't give that level of credit to who really makes their show. I will never knowingly alienate or disconnect from my audience.

I just called on my cell phone.  Virgin Mobile.  The volume was great with no interference, static, etc.  Sounded a bit muffled but that doesn't matter to me.  Overall it sounds good.   8)

Woohoo we got a listen line.

Tonight I'm doing open lines but this theme will be belief.

I'm going to solo the first half of the show with some ideas and observations. Some points to ponder.

We're going to dive deep into a scenario discussed last night (the idea of making contact with alien life), the nature of belief, and observations of other cognitive scientists. We will also discuss the ethical and moral implications to consider with the idea of transcranial magnetic stimulation and the ability to change thought patterns so much, that a person's belief or paradigms held in something could perhaps change or be erased entirely.

We might even talk a bit about the flat earth conspiracy phenomenon, and NASA sending a creationist to space.

I think I'll open up with a thought experiment. I'll ask you to share your beliefs with me too.

It'll be fun!

Archive for tonight's show is up!

Still working on the RSS feed. I have the XML file secured but so secured even I can't access it. It'll play from the episode pages now, so I know that part of it is talking appropriately to the databases.

Talking with other devs. I was at it all weekend (up until 4 AM still working on it this morning).

I think it has to do with my hosting plan if I were to guess (everything else looks right), but we'll see.

Oh, the joys of radio on a budget!  ;D

By the way, thanks to everyone who has subscribed. You rock. I'm going to do everything I can to make accessing the archives easier for mobile.

Along, hopefully, with a plan for planetary offense.    On the outside chance we are the baddest Mothers
in the universe!

I never got into Dead Space 3 but one and two were excellent.

Have you played Alien: Isolation yet?

Okay, took me awhile to compile your homework for this weekend.  ;D

This is Monday's guest, Dr. Philip Lubin. He's the guy with the idea and roadmap being backed by Yuri Milner with blessings of Stephen Hawking for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative to send probes to Alpha Centauri and beyond. His research could see overnight deliveries made to Mars, and see manned trips reduced from 6 months down to a month.

We'll talk about his exciting story, Breakthrough Starshot, SETI, experimental cosmology, and more!

Lots of links and videos on the show page:

BELLGAB PEOPLES!

If you want to be a judge for tonight's Truth or Trash, the number will be (424) 253-0632 or skype: amyontheradio

If you have a story for truth or trash:

I'm opening a second line. That number will be (424) 253-0301 or skype: AOTR2

I have two judges so far. If you want to judge, call early! I'll place you on mute before I bring you on, so I won't be able to hear you.
You also won't be able to hear music during breaks (sorry) due to the way I have the mixer setup.

***You may also want to bring up angels.

Haha. Nope. Oh yeah, this guy has never been on Coast, MITD, OSOM or any other popsci-type mainstream podcast but his ideas have been discussed on almost every major media outlet (mostly by bloggers who have no idea what they're talking about). I'd be surprised if even Neil or Michio had a clue about how to properly explain it. So as we do, go direct to the source. If I ever had Neil or Michio on I'd only want to discuss their own research.

I'm still going to have to catch up on this week's shows next week, so no worries on my end!

I would be fine even if you did a couple shows a week anyway. 5 is awesome but not at the expense of your sanity!

Take care Amy.

Thanks. I've thought about that. I want to try to make it doing 5 days a week for as much as I can do solo. It's not easy combined with handling all other tasks aside from pure production aspects, but it's achievable. Have lots of guests I'm just now booking 1-3 months out due to busy schedules.

I'm working on a killer schedule for next week though. Spent this evening diving into theoretical astrophysics papers for an upcoming guest.
Don't want to say too much right now, but I've gone direct to the source on this one.

Will say this guest I'm studying for is probably going to go down in history for advancing interstellar space exploration.
He's got some fairly notable people behind him, including Hawking.

Cannot contain the excitement I have, both for his research and the fact that he's going to be on with us.  8)

I've settled on doing a replay for this evening. Microsoft took up too much of my day to reschedule and prep for another guest.

At one point after arguing back and forth, they had to remote into my system to 'verify' that I live in the US just to establish a second phone line for said guests.

Need to catch up on juggling production tasks, pre-interviews, site maintenance, etc. anyway.

We'll do open lines tomorrow. I've got several ideas for themes.

You had a good discussion going on, Amy. I was listening but at some point the posting activity moved over to MITD due to the Queen's antics. 21st C Man was having a bit of a crisis and she was picking on him. The discussion developed from there. I can only speak for myself but I'll try not to get distracted again.  ;)

So, what's on tap tonight?  ???

Guest had to reschedule. Spent most of the afternoon on the line with Skype trying to fix the region on my guest line account to add a second phone number.
It's getting later in the day for production and prep, so I'm thinking.

Could do a trivia-themed open lines show.
People could call in, ask me a question, and I'll respond without the aid of a search engine.

This is your show too. What do you guys think?

You're not saying no. You're saying No-urns which is French for Sandra is right.

I'm not going to compete with Midnight. There's also Coast to consider for whatever reason.

I'd rather not compete with Darkness Radio either, but this time slot allows me to wind down by 3 or 4 AM and then get a decent rest to wake up and schedule guests who aren't generally up all night. If I had a producer it would make my life a lot easier, but again, it's all about the cash and right now in this early point in the show's history, I could probably make more by cutting the neighbor's grass.

These are the facts.  8)
