That tells me she's afraid of the people.

So much for being against building walls, metaphorically or otherwise.

Guys! It's a tradition, really! To wait until the last day. That's why Trump's appearance every day seemed a bit odd to old-time convention fanatics.

Good one! LOL

Or maybe it's a Freudian slip.
Nowell = Not well... as we all know that he's sick.

Probably psychological condensation, meaning that it's both.

Good catch! Now you've ruined it for him. 👯

Monitoring the analytics, I may switch back to being a Democrat somewhere down the road. This party is in shambles but it seems like overwhelmingly on social media Democrats are screaming about a lot of the things I'm angry about.

I always knew you were bateman's better half. 👯

The self-importance of the people announcing the state votes is interesting.

Did you miss the Republican convention?  Self-importance? I see pride and fun with a group of people you've worked with for a long time. Both parties.

We're both watching the same thing, but we're seeing via our prisms.

Nancy, that's because you respect these people for whom they are, not for whom they are for. ;) :-*

Yeah, I know. We've been East Coasters/NYC-centric for all the years Trump was coming up as a real-estate developer. Our circles criss-crossed all the time, and so I speak from that experience.  I know Trump the way many of us know Noory. It's been a long slog.

Vote for Johnson. His numbers almost have him in the debates. If we have debates.

Whatever you're trying, add limoncello to it.

Made famous by Danny DeVito, who is in Sunny in Philly, which it is, today.

However, you did a very bad thing, above. You changed my actual words, without an ediot or FIFY or anything, and believe me, I used Trump's proper name, out of respect. The drumpf-thing is most likely wrong and heated rhetoric from show-biz people trying to do a show on HBO.

Tonight's speaker platform is going to be compelling, IMHO. 4 men, 5 women -- usually that would not be the norm, but tonight we're pretending that it's the future. The age-range of the speakers is interesting, too, from the celebrated young to the marginalized elderly.

Since none of us really know what's going on behind the scenes, it's natural to trust your instincts first ... and then let your feelings guide you when you try researching to get to the truth, if it's possible. Use your profession and hobbies to see what people you respect are saying.

People I respect here are pro-Trump and that's hard to parse, but I'm trying.

Feel better, Amy! You are doing great! Steering a calm boat on turbulent seas isn't easy.

How many people would they find whom are willing to die for such a cause though?

They would have to be 'programmed' to do such things.

Sounds a little to out there as far as a theory goes.

Something is wrong though ; something has changed in the recent past which has caused an alarming rise in the destabilization of mental stability among the population.

Guns are useless unless you have a focused shooter. How do you focus the mind of a shooter? I don't know. I'm just trying to understand what's going on. I'm not saying the shooter is profiting, of course.

It's not mass immigration, though that doesn't help. Some of these terrorists are second or third generation citizens of the countries they launch attacks in. I think these successful smaller-scale attacks and ensuing media coverage have emboldened the malcontents. In other words, copycats.

What about the weaponry industry? With no declared war, business suffers. Too simplistic?

I've had some second thoughts. Fear was a dominant theme of the speech. Let's face the facts though.  We live in very troubling times.  I would have preferred a more optimistic tone to the speech a la Reagan but Trump is definitely no Reagan. Maybe Trump went a little heavy on the law and order angle but it is understandable.

I saw a whole lot of Reagan in Pence. I think he's a man to watch -- he's got a direct way of communicating when he gets the chance to speak. Radio experience.

Trump read the speech hot and red, and the performance should worry anyone who was watching with enough distance to see the big monitor. It felt ... overcooked.

Edited -- it got all mangled.

Too early to know if it's applicable in this case, but it occurs to me that what we're currently classifying as terrorism is likely just a new, politicized flavor of a much older cultural phenomenon.  Just wondering what you guys think.

This is too thoughtful a post to get lost in the muck that will be following. Since all of us here have studied various conspiracies -- we're pretty much an expert think tank on the subject -- what do you see emerging here? Remember, timing is everything.

I so much wanted to turn on the TV and rehash the RNC and get all frothed up for the DNC in Philly, the friendliest city and the city with the best food. Compare and contrast the joys of being American during convention season. And now the TV is on, but mute.

Weapons. Fear vs joy. Who benefits?

Alright then. Not trying to spoil the party but I felt you were in danger of becoming what you fear and hate, and by that I mean haters, of course.  ;)

<shrugs> I don't know what the answer is but I keep coming back to this idea of spiking the water supply with psychedelics. It's very hard to hate under the influence of psychedelics. The only problem is it's an all or nothing proposition. Either we all have to be on it or it won't work. If there was a group of people spared the effects they could always that to their advantage to take advantage of us in a myriad of ways. Lame, I know...but I'll bring some good music and you could make some potato salad...maybe someone could bring a frisbee...We can make it work!  ;)

I *knew* we were on the same page. If I ever get the chance to try LSD, I know I'm going to be so happy.

I don't follow the hate speech here too closely but I don't know if I've seen that: people actually calling for violence against another or others. If so, it's already a crime, no? The two classic limits to free speech I remember are yelling fire in a crowded theater when there is none and inciting people to violence against others. I know there are several more but those are the ones that stand out. Also, I believe hate crime laws were passed in the 80s or 90s. I'm a little foggy as to when right now but I'm pretty sure that's in place. However, say I were to criticize Israel for being a theocracy. Does that make me an antisemite? While I'm sure certain organizations wouldn't hesitate to say so is it really true?  ???

Believe me, it's here.

Meanwhile, criticize anyone or anything as much as you like -- BellGab was born from criticism. We're all critics here. That's why we're here.

I don't think so, Nancy (and I'm really not trying to be hard to get along with here). You're still trying to police thought and I'd first ask what your qualifications to do that are and then I'd point out that what historically seems the most effective is a free market of ideas. You're going to get some bad ones but at least people feel free to think and express their thoughts. When people have to consult a newspeak dictionary before even uttering an idea creativity and productivity will go WAY down because what's the point? You're just opening yourself up for a public shaming or a reeducation session.  ;)

I'm much more concerned that I can't get my thoughts across the right way. I do not believe in censorship, but if the people typing are trying to incite violence in the brains of others, I think that person should be shamed or helped somehow.

We're constantly being asked to report people who say they want to kill or be killed. Should we be silent if we're reading or hearing stuff like that? Basically, where do you draw a line?

You just said you stopped at torture so I'd just suggest being brave and reading the whole book this time. I think you're missing a lot of the subtler but more important ideas. You're proceeding from the idea that if we could just perfect our language by pruning out all the bad stuff we'll also perfect our behavior and thus the common good as well. It's a specious argument but one that serves power well and rarely does the common good any good. So, yeah, fuck all our freedoms as long as the bad men stop making you feel uncomfortable. That's clearly what's most important.

I'm glad you clarified. My idea is that language follows thought, not the other way around. So, when we improve our thoughts through research and listening, and more listening, we elevate our thinking and say better things. I think we're on the same page.
