Well, back to Russ Kellett. May be crazy as a bedbug, but he served his country. Like I always say about Prince Harry.

Yes. It varies in use depending on where in the UK it's used. I think the origin is in the south east, Kent area. Where it's used as an alternative to 'mate' or 'bloke'. For some reason (and I don't know why) it evolved into being used to describe someone with lots of apparent wealth but lower classed (as opposed to working class); look up Katie Price. It seems now to be used on those who appear on the Jeremy Kyle show. Low apirational, ugly, teeth missing, dress all day in track suits but their only exercise is a trip to the dealer or lifting the remote control. Oh and breed and be violent.

I had actually heard the term applied to the  Beckhams once. Of course they've lived in Los Angeles for a long time now. That explains why some were critical when they had so many children. I thought they were just jealous of Mrs. Beckham, a former Spice Girl, for keeping her figure.

I heard the term "ned" quite a bit north of the border in Scotland. I think it was Scotland's equivalent to "chav." Basically worthless young teens in tracksuits, bad acne, trainers, who set around the streets and parks drinking tonic wine or cheap cider, doing cheap bad drugs and getting fights, petty crime, and carry Stanley knives. I think the different between them and England's chavs is that chavs like Burberry for some reason.

Goodness. Kind of like Trainspotting.

Thankfully Savage didnt weigh in on Robin Williams last night. I was afraid he might make some of the same kind of cruel remarks he did when Heath Ledger died.

im not saying that he specifically was a pedophile. im saying that he at best took part and benefited massively from a culture of people in which pedophilia is rampant. on top of that, he was used as a public relations tool through his movies and television shows to further those values that said pedophiles and power-players wanted to push on the masses in order to procure their place at the top of the ladder.
im saying why are people mourning this man who they did not even know as though he was part of their family? he was a stranger who was part of a monstrous machine thats caused a lot of damage.
Well, that happens a lot. Remember the insanity after Princess Diana died? People have more of a connection to Robin Williams, though because he entertained them. So maybe it's more comparable to Michael Jackson.

People are taking the opportunity to talk about depression and suicide, which is good, I think.

I know a lot if people don't like Glenn Beck but he really hit it out of the park in his monologue this morning.

"Bovver boy" is a British expression, refers to uneducated, lower class young men.  Closest I can associate it to in the US would be "trailer trash" or maybe "redneck".  First time I heard the expression used was by a colleague from the UK who advised we pass on a pub outside of Belfast that seemed to cater to loud, obnoxious skinhead types.
I've heard the term "chav" to describe that demographic. Do they still use that?

I got confused and put comments on this thread that should have been on the Schraeder thread.

Now Streiber is really laying a guilt trip on those of us who ridiculed the anal probe story--were making fun of a rape victim now.

Yeah, right, blame the spider. I volunteer for an arachnologist. People blame any mark or lesion on spider bites even though they seldom see what bit them. That doesn't mean it was aliens, though.

George "on assignment."

How much Craig Hulet is too much?

I read this story on imdb and have related it on this board before, but, indulge me. When Christopher Walken was playing Whitley Streiber in the film Communion, Streiber complained that he played him "too crazy". Walken replied "if the shoe fits."

Normally I avoid yahoo and the comment section like the plague, but tonight a lot of servicemen and women are weighing in on their experiences with Robin Williams when he visited them in very dangerous places. Every single one of them spoke about his kindness and how he might be traveling with other celebs, but he was theonly one who got out of the chopper and into the crowd. It's really sad that this whirlwind is gone.
People were phoning Mark Levin about this today too. Apparently Wiiliams always gave his all for the troops.

On second thought, it was more his delivery style that was fresh and innovative than the material. Nobody had seen a style like that before.

Williams idol Jonathan Winters also suffered from depression, I think.

Years of off and on substance abuse superimposed onto tendencies toward depression. I really think sometimes heavy drug and alcohol use has a permanent effect on the brain even after the individual sobers up.
Mork and Mindy was appointment viewing when I was in my early twenties. Williams was an innovator with fresh but G rated material at a time when a lot of TV and comedy had gotten stale and there hadn't really been anything new since Saturday Night Live debuted 3 years earlier. In those days, the 3 networks and movies in theaters were pretty much it, besides live comedy clubs, etc. Customized entertainment via cable, the Internet, etc. weren't on the scene yet.

Patch Adams wasn't a very good movie, I don't think. I liked The Fisher King.

Russ Kellett

And I have now read Karen Kains book and have NOT changed my mind. I think she's either mentally unbalanced or some sort of con artist. There were some legal issues with Medi-Cal and the vaccination victims fund. I'm not a lawyer and it's written in dry legalese but it appears that there may have been an attempt at double-dipping or some other act if bad faith. If you google Karen Kain and Lorrin Kain it will be on the first one or two pages of hits. There is also a Canadian ballerina named Karen Kain, though.

I googled it and discovered that it is indeed Falun Gong. Falun Gong has been persecuted by the Chinese government.

My father gave my Mom that book when she was in the maternity ward with me.  I think he thought it was a nice work on child rearing, not being too aware of popular culture or child rearing.

I haven't read the book but am familiar with Ira Levin. In the movie Rosemary's doctor tells her to avoid child-rearing books.

My father gave my mother a kitschy little vase that was a little boy with a fishing creel. It was pink. Presumably there were flowers in it.

What is the Epoch Times, anyway? I used to see it in downtown Seattle, and assumed it was something published by a religious cult. But maybe not.

This is a delayed reaction, but about two weeks ago I cold swear I heard a guest say "Bet that chaps your ass, George".
You did. It was David Wilcock, in the same creepy exchange in which they talked about outing a 6th grade girl who wasn't a virgin.

That is actually a big deal in Asian communities. They will tear down the house and build a new one when they change owners.

Good heavens. There are people even more out if touch with reality than we are?

A couple of superstitious idiots buy a "death bed"--what could go wrong? I guess I'm just in a bad mood tonight.

I tell you, our culture has to get over being so squeamish about death. If your dwelling is more than 50 years old, and has turned over enough times that you don't know all the previous residents, I think that there's a pretty good chance somebody died in it. If the place is over 100 years old, I think there's a good chance that there has been at least one death and one birth there. Guess what? People used to be born and die at home more than now, sometimes in the same beds, I'm guessing, maybe not the same mattresses, but the same beds. If you count outbuildings such as garages, tool sheds, farm buildings, etc. there are going to be even more deaths on the premises. My dad died in our barn and as far as I know it didnt bother anybody who lived there later. People in our society have to stop being such babies, or were in big trouble. Well, we already are, but you know.

BTW, tonight's show is practically a parody of itself.

This relates to the Ebola thread. It's all over Free Republic. The same woman who once called 911 widows "harpies" and defended Joe McCarthy, has called Ebola doc Brantly "narcissistic" and wonders why Christian missionaries can't find enough to do at home.

I have never liked this woman. I believe that much of her rhetoric is for shock effect and to sell an endless stream of books, and this one may have backfired on her.

You know what I really hate? All this ridicule of people for their personal appearance, height, mostly stuff they can't help, plus innuendo about sexual proclivities, etc. I grew up listening to that shit, and can tell you, it's bad for children to be exposed to that sort of  thing coming from adults on a regular basis. Maybe I take it too seriously but I think it sets the child up to get into abusive relationships and use poor judgement later in life.  I wonder if these verbally abusive talk show hosts( and there aren't that many, fortunately) talked that way around their children when they were growing up?

Lorrin is no longer with us. She died in 2009, at the age of 15.  She had lots of seizures from the age of six weeks on, as a result of vaccine from a "bad batch." She also had cortical blindness and breathed through a trach tube. She wore diapers. She was pretty much paralyzed, though her mother claims she moved her hands a bit. She was frail and subject to pneumonia.

It seems curious that he would drink something meant to be put in an IV. At the very least, it would probably taste terrible.

From p. 53 of A Unique Life Fully Lived--

"...once we got home, Lorrin went into a long seizure. When I hurried to the refrigerator to get her IV Ativan, I was shocked. The refrigerator was empty. I had been home one day. I didn't even notice it was missing. Tom had drank(sic) at least ten boxes of the medication while we had been staying at the hospital. There was nothing left to give her to stop the seizures."

She also alleges he was an alcoholic.
