Don't forget Zimmy!

One of my top ten most-played albums ever.  Don't get me talking about music again man!

Hey Dave I have a Q for the guest.  Is IBM's Watson considered an actual AI?  Or is it just a super-efficient text-parsing/internet-searching program?  In other words, it looks smart, but is it actually smart?

Rule #1: Do not let the bots develop their own secret language.

Did you guys ever try cleverbot.com?  I just had this exchange.

Why are clouds fluffy?
Because they aren't in the ground.

Where is the ground?
Under our feet.

Do you have feet?
What kind of a question is that? Of course I have feet.

I read a post somewhere on reddit, where someone theorized about an A.I. that could not only pass the Turing test, but was smart and deceptive enough to intentionally fail it.  ???

A month later and I'm still wondering who or what is HW "taking back the night" from?

Yes I want to know, where did the night go, who stole it, and why didn't I miss it?

;D

Jeez I hope not, I think I'm running out of steam lol.

... I love this pic. Wow. That lady in purple or violet (sorta color blind) clutching her hand almost as if in prayer and seeing a prophet! Old ladies taking pictures.

Looks like he's singing some sentimental oldies there, but I'd expect a little more swooning in the audience.

Remember getting shit for not signing up for more of Art's theater, many of the battered Bell wives here went on to white knight for Heather predictably. Reading through the beginning of this thread is pretty funny.

Haha yes as Chefist mentioned awhile back, on bellgab one can never escape their post history.

...And they forgot the Dark Matter fiasco too. ...

It's funny, the whole DM fiasco, as you aptly call it, caused a huge rift in the collective consciousness of BG (reference: the swirling maelstrom known as the Art Quits DM thread).  But when he came back with the MITD push everyone just willfully forgot all that and were like OMG Art's back!!!  (Except for a few notable skeptics who preached caution, correctly so in retrospect.)

Many awards these days are totally BS. I heard someone advocating voting for Norry on another radio show and the voting is suspect. It is not based on performance, voting by other media personalities, vote by members, based on ratings, based on certain coverage but just members of the public voting and you are even allowed to vote several times.

Awhile back there was some contest for best food-cart hot dog.  To my surprise this guy I drive past sometimes, in my medium-sized town with mediocre food, actually won like fourth place, nationwide.  They interviewed him on local news and his food looked, as I suspected, lousy.  He basically admitted it was just a matter of flooding in many votes in any way possible, but he'd put alot effort into it for the marketing value.  I'll stick to Costco corn dogs over that.

You have some good points.  I just get so tired of all the alcohol talk and the references to women he is attracted to.  I wonder if he is the type of guy who doesn't even wrap gifts.  Then he plays I Am Human and Need to be Loved, Light My Fire, and I Did It My Way.  Flabbergasting.  I voted for him, but only because of the things you said, and I had never heard of the competition.

Watch out now you'll get me in even more trouble. ;)   For the record my actions should not be considered as any kind of endorsement, but rather a grudging tip o' the hat to my old nemesis for his sheer perseverance.  In the world of flaky radio hosts that must count for something.  Hell if he wins I'll even give him the customary 24-hr. break from my wisecracks.

Yeah I've been a bit mixed up lately.  I'll get back on track, but btw in the meantime I am accepting care packages.

I agree.  For some guests who have been around a while, I will enjoy listening to Dave put them through the wringer....

Just to argue against myself, there have been a couple shows I thought would be duds topic-wise, but it was precisely because of Dave's detailed questioning that they opened up interesting paths of discussion.  There ya go Dave, I hope that my self-conflicted input has helped.

I LIKE Dave a LOT so far as a person, but listening to him, is a bit like listening to the evening news to my ears. He doesn't create any atmosphere, other than that of sitting in a recording studio IMO.  I don't mind that,  if the topic and/or the guest is interesting.

I like that Dave is inquisitive and asks intelligent questions, but from what I've heard his style is a bit more like a hard-boiled reporter than a freewheeling explorer of the fringe.  This works well with more down-to-earth guests, and I've enjoyed several of those interviews.  But for more esoteric/speculative/controversial topics I think he gets a little resistant when encountering imprecise answers or a story that doesn't adds up.

I understand he prefers to hold his guests accountable to some level of reality, and alot of folks here like the tough questions.  But like you brig, for evening radio I enjoy venturing into parts unknown with a little more suspension-of-disbelief.  I don't really need a guest's wild claims held to some high level of scrutiny, that's not why I'm listening - I can figure out if they're a kook or not myself lol.  In any case, I may not be all-in with Dave but I'm glad we've got a pro in the mix and I'll definitely be tuning in for certain types of shows.

For me it's Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree, Zooropa and then All That You Can't Leave Behind. I'm also one of the only people that really liked Pop.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Zooropa, sort of underappreciated album.  For some reason I played Lemon repeatedly.

I liked Pride but the rest of Unforgettable Fire left me flat.  I felt it was a bit too mellow compared to War which was their previous album.  I wanted the same production/music style that was on War.

I could be biased, I was in a mopey introspective phase at the time. ;)  The guitar work that album is pretty cool though in any case.

Yeah but it's close enough to Encinitas you can easily get to the good vibe

One of my old haunts.  Much beach-time spent there, usually followed by RT Pizza and multiple games of DigDug.  Sorry, nostalgia flashback.

I like the whole album. Not "Joshua Tree", but still good

The answer for the three best are Joshua Tree, War, and Unforgettable Fire.  With Achtung Baby as honorable mention.  It is known.
