@krowland You have been trying to steal the network from Art since he retired, after the shooting incident. And have been pissed off since he gave the show to Heather, and now that he isn't here, you figure you can do whatever you want. And you're wrong. And funny you mention "Script-kiddie games" what would you know about that Rowland? Maybe a Freudian slip?

Dammit I'm missing the whole side-drama lol.  Gonna have to go back and reread the last twenty pages of this thread again tomorrow.

I'm going to ask...

Why is Dave better now?  I listened to a few Coast shows and was underwhelmed.  Was it the guests?  Was it the producer?  Was he forced to read the 3X5's?  Perhaps he was not allowed to ask "challenging" questions out of fear he may alienate a guest?  I did not actively dislike him, but I certainly was not making my calendar for his appearances.

I don't know, I had the exact same feeling.  I thought it was because he was always doing haunting shows on C2C.  But then he pointed out to me his old show list and there's lots of different topics there so not sure how I missed those.  Who knows maybe it was the paranormal-date ads w/ GN that I was remembering lol.  Anyway I'm more interested in what he's doing on MITD, but I do have a feeling it might be hit and miss for me depending on the show.  Enjoying tonite though.

TED has long been pretentious garbage, soy feed for 'have all the answers but not really' numales and cultural marxists. Hancock exposed them, Sheldrake exposed them, and Hyde destroyed them famously.  Art covered all those topics, even had the patron saint of transhumanism on.

I can't really speak for the wide range on TED, but I do think cutting edge science and the possible cultural/economic implications of future tech trends is pretty interesting.  One of my favorite guests Art ever had on was Bart Kosko who discussed nanotech, fuzzy logic, cyronics, genetics.  Fascinating stuff imho.  And more plausible than another Mothman tale.

...Personally I would like to see guests selected more often from topics that are given as TED talks. Current research and cutting edge ideas. ...

This is a pretty good idea imho.  Perhaps in this sophisticated day and age we need a more reality-grounded fringe?  For instance I love topics like A.I., nanotech, cryonics, transhumanism, theoretical physics, new energy, space travel, genetic engineering, etc.  Maybe intersperse such topics from the scientific/social frontier with some of the paranormal classics.

Other good choices could be obscure history, unsolved mysteries, pop culture themes in books/movies, etc.  So in this case, fringe meaning reasonably-believable but under-covered topics.

Agreed.
Art toyed with many questionable guests...  Cat and mouse-like.

Can't do that nowadays, the world is a more sophisticated place...

Yes I remember when he'd say "I see" or "Uh-humm" in a kind of neutral way, which upheld the suspension of disbelief, while simultaneously validating the audience's doubts.  It was part of his gift of drawing out a story.

But perhaps these days people are more skeptical, and want tougher interviews.  Maybe a backlash to the the flood of often questionable paranormal shows on radio/tv combined with the ease of cross-checking online.

Yeah, it's the cheapest exchange you can have with presented experience. Which might be my only real critique of Dave, sometimes he'll litigate the guest like he's a Redditor whoring for upvotes, sating the dull public mind with practiced reality. Art was the best at restraining that impulse for the sake of narrative and mystery.  Art's audience doesn't exist anymore, people's brains are different, which might also account for a big part of his success with these topics?

Maybe the naysayers are right, and this genre is withering on the vine, here in the internet-connected modern world.  Soon we will have chased away the bigfoots, ufo's, ghosts, and time travelers - we'll be left with hard science, true crime, history, economics, etc.   :(

Yeah, I am with you.  She's thought a lot more about this stuff than I have, so I'll listen.

Personally, I think focusing on believe/don't believe with stuff like this is shallow.  Belief is an ephemeral thing and only acquires substance when you act on it, and few people listening have the slightest idea how they'll act when the occasion arises, or if there's even a choice.  It's just information you take in.

I think it's good to push back a bit on meandering guests, but I do prefer a certain amount of latitude given we're often talking about fringe topics that can't necessarily be held to such scrutiny.  Some folks want the tough questions or even full-on debunk mode from an interviewer.  But I listen to this stuff because I'm interested in the speculation, the "what if's", sometimes I just like hearing the tales for the fun/curiosity of it.

I thought the NDE lady, although a bit undisciplined, was pretty interesting - some of her observations I'd never heard before.  I don't hold her to the same scientific standards that I would say a meteorologist or astrophysicist.  Likewise I enjoyed Adair when he was on - even if he's a total fraud he was still a kick to listen to if only for pure entertainment value.

It's a fine line I guess and each interviewer has to pick where they're comfortable.  I like that Dave is articulate, intelligent, and well-informed.  But when it comes to his analytical side, I hope he errs on the side of encouraging an exploration of ideas and experiences.

Ha...it really just uses the zest as an adjunct flavoring....more bitter to go with the hops. If you tried it in a blind taste test, you would not know it had citrus in it.

Aha, cozying right up to the line but not crossing it, I see.  We're ok then sir.

No offense to Chefist, because he clearly has good culinary taste, but nothing flavored with grapefruit is a "beer".  Same goes for maple, raspberry, chocolate, chili pepper, hazelnut, cinnamon, or pumpkin.  Those may be tasty beverages.  But beer, my friends, tastes like beer.     ;)

Jesus. Listening to Heater "take calls". Two, both sounding like they were set up, in almost an hour with her and Whitley doing their best to produce filler. Very sad.

But Whitley's usual smile-with-a-tear delivery is perfect for this drawn-out sentimental display.
