Unions are not socialism, they are the free market balancing the rights of workers against those of big business.

Universal healthcare is not socialism, it is governments caring for the people who support it.

What is the problem with WalMart?  My problem is not what they charge or how they treat their workers, my problem is that they pay so little at places like WalMart and McDonalds that we as a society are expected to pay section 8 housing, welfare, food stamps, and other government benefits to these workers whether we choose to shop there or not.  That is the issue, and that is why we need a living wage so that the costs at WalMart to their customers reflect their total cost to society.  We are essentially providing these large companies welfare, and it is inappropriate.

You're cherry-picking data to support your position.  I could do the same thing but have no interest in doing so because it won't change your mind and, to be honest, I have better stuff to do.

I hope you are right.  I wish there were no climate change.  I'll be thrilled if it turns out that Al Gore is, indeed, an over-weight huxster.  (I mention his weight because that seems to be of special significance to most global-warming naysayers.  Funny how none of them are concerned about Rush's weight in terms of how intelligent/honest he is.)

However, I think the preponderance of evidence is clear and inescapable.  Climate change is real; its impact may very well prove devastating.

I don't, and since you don't have any data in your post it is impossible to refute.  I put up data, and you say it is cherry picked - data from the last few ice ages and the best temp data on the plant - and you claim cherry picking.  Pretty amazing.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: Dark Matter Network Content

Paranormal is good, but what makes Arts show different from the norm was the hard science and other content.  How about some hard science podcasts?  Lots exist, from Starstuff to AstronomyCast to Qirks and Quarks.

Climate change is not a concern.

We are in a cool inter-glacial: http://climate4you.com/images/VostokTemp0-420000%20BP.gif

The temp has not risen in 17 years: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/service/global/global-land-ocean-mntp-anom/201101-201112.png

What are we worried about again?

George quit doing any work a long, long time ago.  Sometime around the time he decided a free dinner was more important than show prep.

Honestly, for me, it is all Art.  He is a great interviewer, very open, honest, and seems to ask the question I would.  The part I actually like the most is his long open where he talks about the news, more than the paranormal stuff.

I'm going to attempt C2C tonight...what can I expect?

A weak attempt at an Art Bell knockoff show by much less intelligent people, and a host who could not do a good interview if his very life depended on it.

Years ago my oven stopped working, I didnt have the cash to replace it. My main diet in those dark days consisted of mainly frozen pizzas. I used my outdoor gas barbecue to cook the pizza. After much trial and error, the best way is to use a cooking stone. Delicious!!

Good hint.  Thanks!

Radio and Podcasts / Re: Art Bell channel on Sirus

In other news, Art said he was making 75K from Sirius - I sure hope that was 75K a month.

Radio and Podcasts / Art Bell channel on Sirus
November 17, 2013, 11:09:11 AM
Hopefully Somewhere in Time can die and now that Sirius has both Art and Coast they can start an Art Bell channel with all the old Somewhere in Time shows and Art on 4 nights a week, plus streaming.

One can dream.

I dislike Howard Stern and picked XM over Sirius back in the day just to avoid the guy, so not that.

Lots of sports, podcasts on real hardcore science, and classical music - truth be told.  Boy, I am boring.

Hoagland - Charlatan and rip off artist (my opinion)

Noory - unlistenable and not too bright

I really wonder about this deal.  I am not an entertainment lawyer, but...

1) How was he compensated? I wonder if there was a flat plus a subscriber addition number.  Art was asking how we learned of the show and was focused on listener and caller numbers.  Did he underestimate his direct short term pull?

2) He could get out of a non-compete, he is Art Bell and since he quit so soon, and may not have had a lawyer, he could easily argue he lacked knowledge and there was no meeting of the minds.  Judges do not like taking away a person's ;livelihood, particularly when that person is up against a major corporation.

3) The whole idea that he quit for ten years over a non-compete that he did not fight, and then signed another is just beyond comprehension.

3) George Noory and Pete Dominick are still producing unlistenable tripe.
#18
No.

Knapp does exactly the same show every week, and even that old and tired ground pales in comparison to Art.
#19
Yup, time for George to quit.
#20
I will not listen.  Makes Indie one of the worst channels on all of XM - Pete "asshole, prick" Dominick and George "I have no idea what's going on" Noory.

At least there is one channel to avoid at all costs.  Fuck you Indie, Sirius, George, and the guy I hate the worst - Pete fucking Dominick.  Is it possible Pete is more unlistenable and unprepared than George?

Thanks MV!  Thanks Art!

It has been a fun ride, I do wish it had more radio during the battle, and I loved the SiriusXM show as well as all radio you have been on.

Radio and Podcasts / Alternatives to Art
November 10, 2013, 09:02:11 AM
Many have focused on radio hosts that could replace Art completely, instead I will focus on some podcasts and the like that I like, and listen to instead of radio without Art (and now maybe even after Art "returns"):

Instead of Michiu Kaku:

Podcast Starstuff out of Australia that covers the latest Astronomy news.
Podcast Naked Astronomy, much the same from Cambridge, monthly.
Podcast Into Tomorrow which covers the latest in consumer electronics (who need CCrane)
Radiolab and Big Picture Science can also be good.
I am not a fan of Kaku's own webcast and hate Neil deGrasse Tyson

Wow, you made me a click an ad for a Republican.  Hellish outcome.

Not I, on any device.

The app is a bit annoying and clunky, but no big deal.  I have decided to keep my online subscription for all the soccer they have.

Bell doesn't like doing a show anymore--seems clear to me. He seemed oddly obsessed with C2C, he spoke of moving his assets back to the Philippines, he threatened to make the move if the US defaulted, spoke repeatedly about his dual residency, made references to how much time he had to fill (then started to claim he loved 'long-form' radio, and was forever talking about Skype (clearly not getting enough callers), talked about how few years he has left, etc.

Seems like he just wasn't enjoying it. The topics were mostly stale rehash although McCafee and the CIA guy seemed to prick his interest. We know he wasn't going to make much doing this unless it took off, and it apparently didn't. Maybe if his numbers were amazing he would have kept at it, but sounds like they were pretty bad. On C2C he talked to an audience of millions and DM may have only been <20k...maybe Sirius was considering dropping him (probably not, but who knows?)

We're left wondering if his wife hated the desert, if the money wasn't good enough, or that he misjudged his audience draw.

The show was good, Art does fine just talking about the news of the day.

This is a good post, and probably true.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: You broke my heart, Art.
November 05, 2013, 07:08:30 AM
I respect copyright laws and thus paid for a one year streaming subscription to Sirius.  I guess Art can PM and pay me for the subscription cost.

Nothing changed at Sirius thus he simply failed to do his diligence, and now his fans pay for his weird, odd inability to work with others.  Lets face it, the guy lives in a compound next to Area 51 in the middle of nowhere.  He somehow believes that walking away from a radio career because a couple of ham radio guys said he molested his kid (he didnt) and his company did not sue them.  He moves to the Phillipines and marries somehow he met a short time earlier and stays there until he can get her papers in order to bring her back.

Who would do this?  Wouldnt you try to talk any of your friends out of these actions?

Do this Sirius thing make sense in light of his prior actions? Sure.  But it aint normal.

Opie and Anthony have their own channel and also have terrestrial stations.   That is where Art should take the show and crush Coast, his baby, with his new show.

Also, Audible subscriptions can be had - not sure how these work for live streaming but since this is Amazon they have almost unlimited internet resources.

I'll let SiriusXM worry about promoting Art's show.  Although, I have a feeling that they didn't really understand the dominance that Art would bring to their lineup, nor the potential that lies ahead.  Just conjecture, however.

Agree.  Opie and Anthony have their own channel and are also on terrestrial radio.  That is where the money is, and where Art can crush George in a final countdown - by going into syndication.

Art v George - radio cagematch!

I think Art is underestimating how many listeners he as because of the inability to do true ratings.  I bet he is having as effect on Coast.  Their reaction certainly seems to prove that.
