I hereby accept your display of humility as a redeeming quality, and thus, bury the hatchet....sort of.

Damn, I should have explained. It wasn't humility, it was sarcasm, but you're very magnanimous.

Yeah, actually history is pretty much one of my ''strong points''. If you have even a single redeeming quality, perhaps you could enlighten me sometime.

I said F t F; You have me banged to rights. I have been outed by a redneck, so that's ample qualification in anyone's book. To use American parlance (clears throat) I got nuthin..  ;D

It's odd to admire great strength? Really?

No, splitting the infinitive is odd. But I wouldn't know that, I'm a numbskull...Presumably so is Coaster for also spotting it.

Okay: I'll tell you, it should read: Oddly, I admire that level of strength, as I said previously.

Psst, nimrod is a rather derogatory slang term that fits you well. However, if you prefer numbskull, nitwit, or any variation thereof, I can accommodate that, as well.

Oh you have me bang to rights and no mistake. I fall at your superior intellect F t f, no really I do. The shame; I've been outed by a redneck. Oh well.

And, please, refrain from trying to recite history.  The early Christians were, for the most part,  tolerated, with the possible exception of Nero. It it was common to offer Christians a choice: forget that Christian stuff, and adopt the Roman gods, serve the Empire and live well with all the accommodations of a Roman citizen, or die in the Coliseum. Well, we know which one they chose, don't we? Well, obvjously you don't.

History hasn't been your strong point either I seem to recall; Hey I fall down on Roman history, you fall down on everything else, I say we're quits.

No.  I said that, in an odd way, I admired his strength.

This man, more than any person on this entire forum, knew exactly what kind of damage a rattlesnake could do to a human being. Yet, in the face of that, he chose not to save himself by betraying his beliefs, but to subject himself to the possibility of a rather horrible and agonizing death.

In a way, it is somewhat reminiscent of the early Christians during the Roman Empire; they happily chose to go to an agonizing death in the Coliseum, rather than renounce their beliefs. Regardless of your religious leanings, or lack thereof, that kind of  strength, and courage,  is admirable.

And that makes me 'a Nimrod'? (Apparently as used by Bugs Bunny--Psst, it isn't real) You make a sweeping statement that he knew more about snake venom than anyone on this forum; Just how do you know that? The Christians didn't have a a choice; The Romans used them for sport. Granted Saladin had a bit of a wake up, but this is still far removed from deliberately being bitten and then refuse anti venom. The man was a deluded idiot who has now left his family fatherless.

Well, naturally I would not expect a nimrod like you to comprehend, much less appreciate, the underlying meaning of my post.

Nimrod? You sweet talker you...Beautiful piece of music

Edward Elgar - Nimrod

I took it at face value, you admire an idiot who got himself poisoned deliberately, and put it down to 'gods' will if he lived or died. How about if just after several others (including children) had stepped forward to be similarly bitten? You'd admire those too? Why do I get the impression you would?

Next week we'll be looking into how artillery shells can be stopped mid air by prayer. The crux is as the OP stated, religion is the opium of the masses and has over the years caused more death and misery by blind faith and indoctrination than pretty much anything.

Death by rattle snake venom is one of the more unpleasant ways to leave this earth. This man could have received a life-saving dose of anti-venom within a few minutes and probably gone about his way. Yet, he chose to to go home, fully aware of what laid ahead for him.

In an odd way, I find that kind of incredible strength, most admirable. God bless him.

Admiring incredible stupidity? Yeah, I can see that. God wasn't around, it was his/her day off..got the e mail;

"Hey God, one of the contenders for the Darwin awards has deliberately got himself poisoned by a Rattler, and he's waiting for divine intervention to make him well, what do you want to do?"

"Hi Pete, naaa, I can't be bothering with the fuckwit; if he's too idiotic to do something like that, I can't be troubling myself with his recovery"

"Ok Boss"...

your estimate is very low. by many estimates,20 million were  killed by stalin (either executed directly, or died in camps from other causes) . some run as high a 36 million. this doesnt include any casualties from WWII.

Very true. You see my point though.. Stalin killed everyone, not 'community' spirited by any means.

West, I love you but you miss the point.  The right is incapable of engaging in discussion or debate without creating precondition or prerequisite.

IE: I am a leftist so ergo I must somehow support the principles of Marx and because Marx is somehow invalidated then everything I say, a natural extension of Marx, is therefore invalid.  The Right wins before the first item is debated.  They need to create this false high ground so passive observers to the ongoing debate see leftist ideas as "foreign" or "strange", or "dangerous".

Except its hogwash.

So, yes, each team has some dark shadows lurking in the background but when you attempt to engage the right issue for issue, they fall back on flowery prose of yesteryear's thinkers or, more often, on demonization and demagougery.

You forgot to add an nsky...you need an nsky.

The ONLY reason the American Left dropped support for Hitler was because Hitler violated the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of1939 by invading the Soviet Union in 1941 (also known as the Hitler-Stalin Pact).

When Germany lost the war and the whole world learned of the Nazi atrocities, the American Left cut their losses and began to insist Hitler was somehow a 'Right-winger'.  They are still making these claims right up to today.  Which makes sense, he certainly has to be bad for recruiting.

Interesting take; How do you address that Germany (who let's face it were deeply involved in WW2) see Hitler as a right wing fascist too? Or the UK? Or in fact any country..Yet oddly on this forum, you and one or two others believe otherwise...Now, who do I believe? Decisions...

Speaking of bad for their image - thanks to the internet and the information age, perhaps it will be impossible for them to someday claim they never supported their fellow Leftists in the Soviet Union, Mao's China, or places like Castro's Cuba and Pol Pot's Cambodia.

Oh that old chestnut!

Quote
The hard radical Left is pretty much the same everywhere.  They have the same goals and use the same tactics.  That's why they should be easy to spot - a couple of current examples being Occupy and the Obama Administration.

You're like a wind up toy PB; Honestly. You just spout the same uninformed bollox in almost every post. I've asked several times and to date you cannot give me an example: Which 'left wing' revolution has occurred where the people overthrew the monarch and installed a peoples parliament where each and every citizen was equal? Moreover can you give the details of a revolution where a peoples collective was overthrown by the people and a monarch or autocracy installed? When I say the people, I don't mean aided and abetted by the USA who just didn't happen to like the elected government..

But i digress...

Stalin wasn't a communist, he was a fascist dictator, so was Pol Pot and Mao. 'Hard left' to use your parlance is someone who doesn't want a government telling them what to do from a position of authority. They also believe in the redistribution of wealth and equal salary irrespective of profession. Stalin oversaw a great many very poor and a few elite. He was such a communist he had several hundred thousand murdered. As well as Jews, Muslims, Christians, and pretty much anyone he thought was a threat.
