Some of you may hate me for this, but I miss Michael Smerconish on terrestrial AM. I know he wasn't a righty (kinda lefty really), but his show was always interesting to listen to.

edit: and of course neal boortz

Real talk - what are some of the potential net-based problems for a live streaming site? The stream has had something like 100+ listeners from here, but a proper Art show would bring in thousands... I feel like that's a web meltdown waiting to happen unless they're VERY well prepared.

The biggest issue on their side would be server bandwidth. His stream is running at 32kbps. I'd say, with a 100mbit dedicated server, he could host around 2800 listeners on that machine. A typical streaming broadcaster would have multiple machines though, so that quickly becomes thousands upon thousands that could be hosted.

On the listener side, software incompatibilities, and insufficient bandwidth would be some of the only issues. a simple icecast stream at 32 kbps though could be listened to over a dial up connection though, so bandwidth issues would be minimal.

I just realized something, I havent listened to a live stream from artbell.com since i think 1996ish. Thats when they stopped streaming it for free. Looks like stream is over.

the icecast instance restarted, it should come back

Isn't there a limit to how many can listen with Icecast, though?

Not really, if they distribute a .m3u, it can have as many relay servers in it as possible. It would be similar to alex jones' shoutcast setup. they have like 30-40 shoutcast servers with the load balanced between them all. Its cool stuff

because it is an icecast stream, it should work with nearly everything. the different links are just different playlist files (well, and 1 html player it looks like)

This also means the website can have a player embedded in it, and basically every media device under the sun can play it.

I almost hate to see this thread wind down, in life you almost never get to see such unmitigated hate
accross your screen. Long ago because of fast blast I learned to ignore it. When you do a show and have a
guest people think they hate you will see "dump this ass hole and go to open lines" and a lot more just
like it and much worse, in the end you have to do what you think is right and act on it. For the most part
by the end of the show you are getting messages like"best show I've ever heard". Once in a while you
do have to "dump the asshole" but if you follow the advice of a mob it almost always goes wrong.

This board is a lot like that. decisions that we are forced to make or make because we think they are the
right thing to do are just that, and if they turn out well your a genius, if not your dead to the World or at least
some posters on this board, but it is always fun to watch.

We are currently in talks with Sirius/XM which really knows how to deliver to vehicals very well. The idea is to
become Independent Broadcasters which means no pay from Sirius while still keeping it exclusivly Sirius/XM in
the Broadcast World, however we would then be free to stream free at artbell.com. Another words the best of
both Worlds. In the long run I think it would benefit all including Sirius/XM. I think this will work but if not we will
stream the show at the first opportunity, either way it will happen if I have to finance it myself, I will.

I know all this seemed very sudden to most of you but there was much going on behind the scenes you do not
know about and because it was said to me in confidence I am not free to discuss publicly, however I feel this is
the right decision. If I am wrong I am sure I will be dead to the World and some who post here.

I want the show to work at least as much as all of you but I have been at this for a while and I know what it
takes to be viable and when I say that I mean not just as a niche type show, viable Worldwide. I understand
that some of you are sooooo angry that you will not listen to the free steam and I will just have to find a way to
live with that.

                                                                                                                             Rage on,

                                                                                                                             Art

Great to hear. I think this setup has the potential to work better for you.

I had a feeling you weren't just jumping ship. Thanks Art

http://live.artbell.com:8303/stream is working for me in chrome.

download vlc or something like that if you're having issues.

not gunna lie, using las vegas approach as a test stream might not be the best way to test for drops ;) haha

regardless, its cool to see that things are moving again for the show.

Edit: googling the ip address of the stream https://www.google.com/#q=50.7.77.114 reveals that there are many other streams being hosted by this server. It appears they testing out a streaming company, not rolling their own setup, at least for this test.

true, but the question is...
how large would an apartment complex.... full of world of warcraft and call of duty players feeding on free Red Bull.... need to be to exceed bandwidth usage of Netflix?

huge. i used to run call of duty servers for a large gaming clan. with over 150 players connected over multiple server instances, we were only pushing around 10mbps. To put that in perspective, a single HD netflix stream can easily run between 7-10 mbps. So 150 netflix streams would use 150x the bandwidth of 150 COD players.

If you need tagging help after the 18th of this month then I would be very happy to help! Shoot me a pm if you do.

Bumper music would be great - and some full songs wouldn't hurt ;)

Thank you for all the work you're doing

Thanks, I'll let you know! I've gotta see where stuff is at. Thanks!

Is any of this in a torrent, I cant access this pydio to download anything.
When I uploaded my 700 show art torrent and the phil hendrie parodies,it was simple with any torrent downloader.
Or can someone walk me thru it. If this is a pay service well, ill save the swearing.

The torrent isn't up yet, work is still being done to prepare it. Expect the full release to happen around christmas or new years.

What would be a good archive of Art's old shows on YouTube? I could sit and pick, but am hoping one glaringly has the most archived shows. Either YouTube or other venue.

I'd appreciate it!

well, i did have a youtube channel a while back.. artbellshows .. but it got deleted cause i had too many copyright hits for the bumper music. I had over 100 shows uploaded, and if I hadn't been deleted, i'm sure it'd be north of 500 by now. PM me if you'd like access to my archive. its not on youtube though.

Or maybe working on it will soothe the pain.

I'm still in the "what the fuq?" stage.   :(

that's okay, i'm too busy with school this week to do much as well. at least we wont abandon that project like a certain someone we know ;) haha

Wonder if the writer knows that for a fact or is just speculating.

All i know from that article is that the writer didn't really fault art at all. in fact, he almost sided with him, and pointed out that the larger issues at hand can no longer be ignored. very interesting.

I'll tell you what.. he doesn't sound like a baby, and he makes some VERY valid points. The biggest problem is that I could have told him these things before he started. Oh well, I still wouldn't count him out yet. Perhaps a hybrid online/terrestrial solution will present itself.
