Radio and Podcasts / Re: Classic George Noory

These are all of my favorite speech mannerisms from C2CAM's various hosts:

Art Bell:

?oh reaaaaalllllly??

Bad George (Noory):

?To the phones we go!? (said as though he?s ordering a jump to warp speed)

?INDEED, INDEED!? (used when coming back from break)

Ian Punnett:

?... next, on Coast to [pause] Coast, A [pause] Emmmm??

Rollye James:

?... next, on Coast to Coast ayyy-M!? (with a semi-crazed lilt like she?s stripping while saying it)

Good George (Knapp):

?Taking us into break now it?s Love Her Madly; this 1971 chart topper by the Doors quickly became one of that groups biggest hits peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Penned by Robby Krieger, the song was recently included as a bonus track in the 2007 reissue of LA Woman. Here it is now ? Love Her Madly - after which I?ll tell you about the time Bob Lazar and I tag-teamed Mothman at Skinwalker Ranch - on Coast to Coast AM.?

What is up with Noory and "INDEED, INDEED!" ?

Whenever he has a guest on who has just predicted the apocalypse, he enters the bumper following the prediction of the apocalypse by shouting "INDEED, INDEED! Our guest tonight is ..."

WTF does "INDEED, INDEED!" mean?

OMFG

I heard that lunatic on about 18 mos. ago the first time Noory had her on. This was one of the few times Noory's cluelesness and offensive questioning was absolutely perfect. She was trying to talk all serious about vampiring and was basically in the middle of a 15 minute monologue that had gone without a peep out of Noory when he suddenly, out of the blue, interrupts and says -

"Do you or your friends ever dress up like ... [sinister voice] Count Dracula? [/sinister voice]"

which kind of threw her for a loop and as she was starting to reply to say that no, this was a serious thing that they all did, Noory interrupts again -

"HA! To the phones we go ..."

Only tangentaly related -

On Whitley Streiber's Dreamland this weekend he had the "scientist" who had an implant removed from him. I remember hearing Knapp interview Dr. Lear several months ago noting that one of Lear's surgeries was to remove an alien implant from a "respected scientist" and was intrigued by that. I don't usually listen to Dreamland but I saw that and had to check the podcast.

The anonymous scientist proceeds to tell a story about once being confronted by an alien wearing a blue "uniform" and carrying a "ray gun" that looked like it was out of "Star Trek." Even Streiber paused and was like "wow - I've never heard any abductee describe anything like that ... ever before" --- this guys story became less and less lucid as he continued.

Does this cast a pall over all Lear's implant removals? I've always had a little bit of a question since Lear is a podiatrist - a fact that is never heavily emphasize in interviews with him (rather the more generic "physician" is used). I used to be really intrigued by the implant removal thing but - between the podiatry thing and this - it's starting to fail the smell test.

For some reason it was the appearance of words like "physician" in the subject line and my sleepiness after just getting in from the evening but I read this and, momentarily, thought it said:

"I listened to the program on May 19th until I became too ill to conceive."

not:

"I listened to the program on May 19th until I became too ill to continue."

I thought we were hearing of an extremely serious symptom of Nooryitis - and a new method of birth control - but, alas, such was not the case.

Seattle was the latest market to join the new PPM ratings system Arbitron has deployed and - with results for April released yesterday - it's been a complete bloodbath. Noory's local affiliate - KVI - which had been regularly in the top 10 sunk to #27 out of 30 stations (over all time slots, not just C2CAM) - #29 is a high school station and #26 is a mariachi station, BTW.

In LA, Noory's affiliate KFI has dropped from #2 with the old system to #15 with the new system.

A friend of mine who works in radio said with the old diary system people tended to fill out their favorite shows or stations, even if they didn't listen to them ... sports radio and NPR have also taken huge hits across the board. I could completely see that as being the case with C2CAM where people who have drifted away from Coast still dutifully enter them into their diaries because they support the concept of C2CAM even if they don't listen anymore.

It seems a lot of stations and networks are going to be making some major changes in the next few months now that the rules of the game have changed. Perhaps this could be Noory's death knell?

I think that was about the time SkyNet went online, too.

the smart Phd's have know it all syndrome

I think that was the same argument made by the Visitors when they started rounding-up "the scientists" in "V"! Are you Dianna?

Not sure it matters.

I think the point is that if someone appears to be deliberately obscuring their credentials by taking pains not to mention the institution of their degree (where convention indicates you otherwise would), the method they received their titles if outside the norm, etc., one must naturally wonder what else is being obscured.

I have no problem with non-terminal degree guests or guests with unconventional terminal degrees who are forthcoming about the source of those degrees. Most of them are the most interesting. My issue is only with guests who claim degrees or titles that would conjure the image of a regime of training or education in the listener's mind that the guest never actually undertook; and with the show's reluctance to provide contextual background info during the guest's bio-read.

The areas C2C deals with are so niche and outside the norm that when you have guests like the above it lessens the seriousness of the subject matter and helps cast ridicule on "legit" guests doing serious inquiry into said subject areas by advancing the "nutcase stereotype."
#189
Is it just me or does anyone else feel C2CAM should be more forthcoming about the status of degrees held or claimed by some of their guests?

There are a number of excellent guests like Michio Kaku, Brian Weiss, Charles Tramont, etc. who have legitimate advanced degrees in various fields of scientific inquiry, etc. etc.

More and more, though, it seems like "Dr. so-and-so" is going to be on discussing such-and-such and, during the show, is constantly referred to as "Dr. so-and-so" but a little off-air digging reveals "Dr. so-and-so" got his Ph.D. in crystal healing through a correspondence university in Mexico. Or, of course, the famous (infamous) "Sir" Charles Schultz ... (who was "knighted" by a Chinese businessman who bought a Scottish "barony" through an online auction - a fact never mentioned during his interviews; the listener's imagination is just left to assume Sir Charles was knighted by the Queen).

I don't have a problem with these people being on as guests but it seems like Noory, consummate newsman he is, should qualify their credentials in a more forthcoming way so the listener can actually make a distinction in credibility between some of the quite credible guests and the snake oil salesmen.

I recall that, like back in the late '90's Art used to give over-the-air instructions on how to use your VCR to tape the C2C audio since audio cassette tapes wouldn't hold the whole program.

I love raccoons and long time ago, i used to put cat food out for them during baby times. They have been reduced in the past 2 years, and I'm not sure why. I also have a fox who lives nearby. Wildlife is my passion. I wish I had done something related to it for a career.

I love raccoons too but they're pretty unpredictable. The fact that they're small, intelligent and normally gentle belies their jaw/muscle power or penchant to charge if there are kittens in the area. We've worked for thousands of years to conquer this planet and the hell if I'm going to be the one responsible for backing-down to a raccoon and giving moral support to an animal uprising. That's how it always starts.

I've been anxious to hear how AJ is covering this but haven't had a chance to listen to his "show" yet --- or the bearable part thereof ... though I understand our girl Rollye James was a guest on it the other day speaking about the swine flu.

On an entirely unrelated matter I was menaced by a raccoon this evening.

I went for a walk where I live in a very urban area of Seattle. While Seattle may be somewhat provincial it's not exactly the frontier and the most exotic wildlife I usually see are house cats.

But, this evening, I walked past four raccoons (granted, raccoons are a pretty urban animal); in the 4 years I've lived here I've seen one prior to this evening. The fourth raccoon I came across started chasing after me. Raccoons don't move too fast and he was a little ways from me when he started so it's not exactly like I was running away but he was clearly galloping toward me. When he got pretty close I turned around to face him, recalling that raccoons are the closest relative of bears and you're not supposed to turn your back on a bear. Even facing him he continued to inch toward me. I turned again to continue walking and, once my back was turned, he - again - made a fast break toward me, so I spun back at him and started moving toward him at which point he gently changed direction and continued on his way.

I'm pretty sure the raccoon was not rabid as it had some sense of trepidation when I confronted it, and it also wasn't snarling or anything. However, a search of Google News and Blogpulse shows an uptick in stories nationally about raccoon confrontations. Here's one about two rabid raccoon attacks within a span of a week in Fairfax, Va. (Separately, on the SD Zoo Website, last updated a year ago, it notes that there's no documented case of a human contracting rabies from a raccoon in US history.)

I think the show started yesterday. (Like Michio Kaku, I don't believe in the linear nature of time. This has made it difficult for me to hold a steady job or keep dentist appointments.)

They need to do something legit for 2012, like a show with a live audience at the Hollywood Bowl (hosted by Art, of course). If they did a live show for 2012 I would totally go down for that.

... with character actor Stephen Root discussing some of his intriguing and humorous roles! (last night)

Stephen Root is a riot but, come on, a global flu pandemic is like the climax C2CAM has been thrusting toward --- and right at the magic moment they pull out and go to get a sandwich?! WTF?

Who's the lead guest on Dec. 21, 2012 gonna be - Betty White? That's gonna be a disappointment to the 300 or so people GN has now extended invitations to as guests over the last couple years.

I read a post under another topic by who posted it escapes me at the moment, but it referred to a caller declaring on the air that George's intro did not generate the excitement that George Knapp's does.

That was me!

Art stated himself he kepy away from "those people" for a reason and when he last left they fired 30+ that worked for HIM, why?

This is one of two things I don't get about C2CAM: the gigantic staff. Since it's a 4-hour show, 7-nights a week with a "content rich" (ahem) website and a monthly print newsletter I can understand having a larger than normal staff but 30+? Seriously, by my back of the napkin calculations I could easily see having a dozen staff in addition to the hosts but 30+?

The other thing I don't understand is their offices they now have, or at one time had, in Grants Pass, Oregon. Why in Grants Pass and what goes on there?

Oh God, that's the Thanksgiving from hell.

Steve Quayle: "Someone should check on the turkey. I think it's overdone."

Alex Jones: "IT'S NOT OVERDONE, THE EVIDENCE IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE! THESE ARE MAINSTREAM REPORTS ABOUT THE TURKEY NOT BEING OVERDONE! JUST GOOGLE IT! GO AHEAD - GOOGLE IT!"

Ed Dames: "The turkey's not even here. We keep hearing reports that Jerome put the turkey in the oven but I remote viewed it to a location in upper Togo. I've assembled a team of specialists who will be able to recover the turkey, we're just waiting on funding to go in after it. After the killshot there will be no more turkey's so wee need this one."

Richard C.: "I remember Walter Cronkite liked turkeys. Did you know I was his science advisor?"

Jerome Corsi: "I refuse to eat any turkey that doesn't provide a birth certificate - I'm talking a vault copy of the birth certificate, not a certified copy. Why hasn't the turkey produced it yet?"

If all of your family and friends died of Morgellon's disease and you found yourself lonely, sad, pathetic and alone on Thanksgiving and if George Noory came along to rescue you (iz a Coast family thang) by offering to host a dinner - which he would not attend - for you and any 5 C2CAM staff or guests, whom would you choose?

Yeah, I know Ian's intro schtick is supposed to be less "showbiz" than the others with his cold open stuff "mic check - can you adjust the volume, I need a little more gain - ok, better ... so I was walking my dog today - oh, hello, welcome to Coast to Coast AM - anyway, I found a vintage 1947 Spiderman comic ..." but C2CAM is all about showbiz so it goes dead flat.

I remember some months ago some caller called in and did his thing with George and then said "oh one more thing" and George was like "what?" and the guy goes like "you need to work on your intro, George Knapp has you beat in intros" and George N.'s voice goes totally flat and he's like "whaddya expect me to say?" and the caller is like "George Knapp's intro builds interest and momentum with his burning out the Mojave desert like a Scirocco line" and then George N. disconnected him and goes "well we don't have deserts in St. Louis - ha!" or something totally inane that showed he didn't get it at all.

The best intro line of course is Art with "across all the world's time zones, each of them covered by this program like a blanket" -- his emphasis on "like a blanket" conveys this sense that you're part of this giant machine that's lumbering through the cosmos when you're listening to the show.

According to the website, Art will -not- be on this Friday due to "engineering problems in Manila." Why is Art back in Manila?

Some dude named Richard Syrett (sp?) is gonna host.

I love Michio Kaku but he goes over the same material in each appearance on C2CAM.

I love George Knapp but I don't like how he goes to break like a FM radio DJ; why does he announce the song names and artists of the bumper music?

#204
I wonder about George's sudden prolific writing streak and if he isn't doing what Tom Clancy does these days, where someone else writes the book and Tom Clancy slaps his name on it because it will sell more copies. I've got to think George's contributions to these literary efforts is putting his name on the cover, doing book tours and talking about it on C2CAM.

But, in any case, at least we know this upcoming book will be one of the greatest works of all time, right up there with Catcher in the Rye, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Bible.
#205
Art had a full page, though brief (about 2/3 of the page was a picture of Art), interview in the current issue of WIRED about C2CAM. There was nothing there that was new or he hadn't said before, but I did think it was funny how the fill-in host of a radio show gets a full interview in WIRED and the regular host isn't even mentioned.

Art also looks very old in the photo. I'm not sure if it was the lighting or he's just aged a lot recently. The picture was taken outside at night from an odd angle so I think it might just be that.
#206
OMG, last night Noory introduced Rosemary Ellen Guylie (sp?) who, apparently, is writing a book with Noory. He started out the interview by saying ...

"This is going to be one of the greatest works of all time!"

The modesty!
#207
OK, this guy is really quite interesting after listening to him for a bit ... however, there comes a point when certain speech difficulties don't translate well to an exclusively audio medium like radio.

I have to admit I voted against 100% unscreened calls and voted only for unscreened calls during open lines. The one thing I never liked about Art Bell's open lines was that, sometimes, when you'd have a really compelling guest on, you'd get callers who would go off on tangents that Art would have to interrupt or come out with questions from kookville. Though, I'd take 100% unscreened calls any day over 0% unscreened calls.

It wasn't an option but I'd also like nice C2CAM merchandise available other than the crap they have at the online store currently.

OMFG ...

I don't know anything about John Taylor Gatto, George's guest tonight, but
this gentleman sounds like he's absolutely plastered. I don't think he came on the air drunk, I think he's just an elderly man with a seriously slurred voice, but it's clearly not a voice that's acceptable for radio. Without exaggerating for emphasis, this fellow sounds absolutely drunk as a skunk.

What happened to C2CAMs vaunted "pre-interviews" with a producer?
