Quote from: onan on November 07, 2013, 11:07:05 AMWell I was gonna use:

Welcome to the jungle
We've got fun 'n' games
We got everything you want
Honey, we know the names
We are the people that can find
Whatever you may need
If you got the money, honey
We got your disease

but I thought it just a tad too much.
I am literally still laughing. Too, too good.

Oh yeah. I noticed a post from Unquenchable Angst about this - the disappearance of the "fifth" of liquor in favor of the "750ml". God, what a bloodless, lifeless thing is that: far too piggish for one, but a churlish, niggardly amount for a party. I've long given up on that earlier, much greater sin and annoyance: the disappearance of the quart of liquor. Now that was a manly silhouette and a man's appropriate ration, from which he might be an endlessly generous host.

Quote from: onan on November 07, 2013, 09:34:56 AMWelcome have fun
You gotta wonder at the felicitousness of the timing of the latest members, bless 'em all. It would seem that a brand new member these days might feel somewhat overwhelmed by the momentous events facing him/her. Of course the apparent chaos may have been the attraction.

Or it could be like a wine merchant of ancient Rome who just retired with plans to move to Herculaneum, who sails into the Bay of Naples on the morning of August 25th of 79 C.E., hoping to drop by the Chamber of Commerce and check on available apartments before doing a little neighborhood shopping.

Could be much worse though. A new member might have just plopped down for a 3-year contract with Sirius based on the availability of Dark Matter. To continue the tortured Vesuvian Scenario (Ooh! Good Bad enough for a Robert Ludlum book title!), that would be like the stunned person the new retiree meets on the way to the Bay of Naples, who on August 23d had handed over final payment of 10 million sesterces for that wonderful little hillside villa with all those spicy frescoes and murals...

Amazing. I continue to be knocked out by how often I recognize myself among folks here. And although I haven't listened in a long time, I always thought Stephen Hill's instantly recognizable voice was one of the most sweetly pleasant and calming in all of radio.

Actually both Sir John Keegan in his landmark work, the magisterial Face Of Battle, and genius classicist Victor Davis Hanson, primarily in his Carnage and Culture and The Soul of Battle, have pretty much addressed the realities of ancient combat. Hint: 1) it was incredibly bloody and dirty (both physically and morally), and 2) there were a hell of a lot of deaths by wounds to the genitals and groin.

Sad? Nah, not sad...just was a brief reminder. My husband and I are out on the back porch with the dogs. Crickets chirping and we're just talking about anything that pops into our heads...films, books, something my mother said and we bust out laughing. It's beautiful...the furthest thing from sad.
That's the healthiest thing I've read here in the last two days.

I had a random stupid dream last night.  I was in a small group of people standing behind a velvet rope barrier watching Rudy Giuliani in a casual sit-down interview with a member of the print media.  Giuliani was relaxed, charming and witty.   When I caught his eye, I told him, "I voted for you Rudy!"  He nodded his head ever-so-slightly and replied, "That's nice, thank you."

What's random is that I'm completely indifferent towards Giuliani, and have nothing but neutral feelings about him, if at all.  He's never been on any ballot I've ever filled out.  He doesn't look like anyone I know, nor does he remind me of anyone I know.  There's no reason for me to have a dream about Rudy Giuliani, nor ascribe positive attributes to him.  Therefore this dream is not only random, but stupid.
..and that's the most human and funny!

Yeah, I sort of pondered including mention of Nowhere, but he's part of my tribe, don'tcha-know?  I'm borrowing a page from The Great Communicator's notebook:  speak no ill of a fellow lib!  (Actually, I DO think Ronald was a great communicator.  He was a marvelous public speaker with a keen sense of theater -- and I don't mean that in an underhanded, disparaging way.)  Whether or not what he communicated was truth, well, you know, Sardondi, that this is where we part.

It would be intriguing to see who has posted the most on the political threads in the last 90 days...  I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that it's QK (with NiT and PB probably a semi-distant second).
Posted the most? You're probably right. Posted the vilest, most offensive, unilaterally filthy personal attacks, including accusations of pedophilia? Nowhere, hands down.

(and yeah, I understand the "speak no ill" concept...and yeah, I practice it more than I want to. But, hey, who's gonna protect my guys if I attack 'em too?)

Heh. The idea of using a source as rabidly leftist as Think Progress, and actually suggesting there could be any truth to anything they might say about any conservative person or idea, particularly anything to do with the Tea Party movement, is just as ludicrous as saying you can trust Mein Kampf to have the truth about Jews.

Which to my mind makes the decision to go with Sirius even less defensible. Of course it's hard to keep hindsight out of it, although I was always dumbfounded by this deal. (I'm sorry - that truly wasn't a "I told you so" since this is just too sucky a deal for me to take any pleasure at all in it - not even in one of life's sweetest pleasure's, that of schadenfreude.)

I know the feeling you're talking about. Although I don't feel quite so personally down, Art has disappointed me with what I think are his rash and foolhardy words and deeds, beginning with his failure to conduct standard "due diligence" research of Sirius and potential problems with technical and performance issues. It seems amateurish, as if Art did everything essentially by himself. I wonder now if Art did his deal with Sirius without hiring competent legal or technical assistance. Astounding.

Quote from: West of the Rockies on November 06, 2013, 12:35:12 PM...there is no real discussion there, just venom, word walls, and anger -- maybe MV should rename that thread the QuickRuteger Circle Jerk.....
Funny: I was nodding my head in agreement, particularly about the "venom, word walls and anger" - but I was thinking that a check of the Venometer showed that "QuickNowwhereInTime Circle Jerk" was a much better fit.

Just so cool: In 2015 two brothers will drive cross country. Big deal, huh? well, yeah. They'll do it in a car they have produced by 3-D printer. And it's made of polymers and will use a total of about 20 gallons of ethanol fuel to complete the trip. http://www.popularmechanics.com/3d-printer-news/urbee-2-the-3d-printed-car-that-will-drive-across-the-country-16119485?click=pm_news

There's just so much neat stuff about this. We're on the cusp of a sea change in manufacturing. And I see no real preparation for the huge training requirements, mostly because there are few or no opportunities for such.

Still, what a glorious time - how can Jetson cars be far behind? I want to live long enough to flit across the skies in a flying car. "♪Meet George Jetson....♫" Ahhhhhhh.

I began this thread in a good faith attempt to have a place for a "summing-up so far", where I - anyone - could come to catch up on what must be something like a dozen or more threads begun on the issue and perhaps 6,000 - 10,000? - posts made on the demise of Dark Matter. There's just too much input. I told someone else it's like trying to drink from the proverbial fire hydrant. I mean, there are 3,700 posts in the "Art Bell Quits Dark Matter" thread alone. There's just no way.

And this thread has been helpful to me so far because I learned right off the bat of the Tantrum Post and the fact that Art's deal with Sirius apparently included a 2-year non-compete clause, which I presume is implicated by his decision to shut DM down. (How? How could he have done this, and right after returning from the misery of his 10 years of wandering in the wilderness?!)

But then just as soon, I helped derail my own thread by going for the yucks. And we sort of went for what bitter laughs we could muster under the circumstances. Drat. Hoist by my own petard.

But I'm still serious about wanting a forum which gives a synopsis of major events and posts. Any hope of resurrecting that? Is the Tantrum Post really going to be Art's final word on the subject? Has he truly not rethought and regretted those oh so harmful words, which, IMO at least, have done him and his reputation some serious damage? I really hope he reconsiders the post he made when he was hurt and angry. I'd hate for that to be Art's Götterdämmerung.

By the way, I'm really Ed Dames.
You have every right to bump a hit so good that Art would have used it to lead off his New Year's Eve Prediction/Last Year's Sum Up of Predictions show.

Well, at least Art would have back when he was an actual, you know, radio show host.

And no, you've conclusively proven you are most certainly not Ed Dames because you have accomplished something he never once did: make a certifiable, 100% accurate prediction.

The problem is that through his own impetuosity and, yes, childishness, Art is harming himself with one of his most loyal fanbases - perhaps the most loyal. We certainly helped keep the flame alive if nothing else. It's just all so self-destructive on Art's part. Plus - and I never in  a million years would have seen myself saying this - Art himself is making George look like a professional by comparison.

Something just struck me, but I seriously want to be fair about it, because he may have done so.

But at any point in the last - what, 7 years? - that George was being slagged savagely by folks here, and getting far, far worse treatment than Art, did Art ever contact anyone to say, "Hey, this is unfair", or "Those are truly hurtful things to read if they're aimed at you" or the like?

Because I'm getting the feeling that when we were performing a useful and valued service, it was all unicorns and rainbows....

Supposedly Art's non-compete lasts for two years.

But, ye gods and little fishes, there's no way I'm going to browse what is - at this point - over 3300 posts just in the "Art Bell Quits Dark Matter" thread, not to mention the dozen or so related threads with posts numbering into the hundreds. So I begin this thread for the totally selfish reason, which I assume will be shared by many, of needing the information myself.

If I understand correctly Art himself has posted here in direct comment. True? False? George as well? Non-compete status? Anyone? Bueller?

Random Topics / 100th B'day - Vivien Leigh
November 06, 2013, 01:09:24 AM
I recognize this is more the obverse of the topic than squarely on it, but I think we should note that November 5th was the 100th anniversary of Vivien Leigh's birthdate. And while I think she was an excellent actress, and I can't imagine anyone else as Scarlett O'Hara, I must confess I am shallow enough to think she was more beautiful than she was talented, which is saying an awful lot. I think she was one of the Triumvirate of Hollywood's Most Naturally, Gloriously Beautiful Women, along with Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren.

And there can't be anything wrong with that.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: Art Bell Quits Dark Matter
November 05, 2013, 04:01:38 PM
I commented just the other day in another thread to the effect that the idea that "people are basically good" is a laughable conceit, and that unless constrained by early moral/religious teaching along with constant instruction and life in a society which highly values those moral/religious precepts, that humans will pretty much act just like selfish swine.

I was concerned that my opinion might have been too harsh. After all, saying that humans, unconstrained by moral or religious values, will always act in their self-interest regardless of harm to others or promises to do otherwise is a very tough pill for some to swallow; and an issue about which some might certainly disagree.

But then Art ups and pretty much conclusively proves my point.
