Isn't it funny how the only people (still) whining about Trump are literally petulant children?  It cracks me up every time.

I think thats probably a very complex situation.

For one, the barrier to entry back then was insanely high and difficult- With very few being able to make it in radio and a system of gatekeeping that separated the wheat from the chaff... By the time someone had made a career in radio and was middle aged- They would have to be head and shoulers above the competition. And Art was.

Would Art have "made it" in todays world. Probably not... He would have quickly realized that the reward isnt really there anymore and pursued something more lucrative. I'm certain alot of real potential talent is lost because now that the barrier to entry is so low (as in anyone can have an internet radio show) and the competition for actually making a buck is so high (you are competing against anyone with an internet connection) and the competition so fierce- Most with Arts talent would move on to something else and we are left with the Veras of the world who arent really making money doing this but are seeking something else (e-fame? Idk...Its beyond me)

The internet has changed everything- Its also made competition for entertainment dollars a blood fest. The people pursuing 'radio' these days are dreaming of a career (that will probably not happen and will end up being a beg-a-thon for a few bucks to make rent) but quickly see that its not going to happen- So the smart ones (like Bell) probably move on and we are left with the ones who lack real talent...I'm generalizing too and not trying to tar everyone with a broad brush but overall that is the case.

Bell came on the scene when nobody was broaching this subject matter- There were still gatekeepers- People like "us" (bell fans) didnt have 24/7 acess to all the entertainment we wanted on demand. Every person (who at the time hadnt been completely debunked) involved in the fringe was lining up to get on his show and he could pick and choose the best of the best.

The time and place was a perfect storm.

fast forward to today and I can google a subject that interests me (say Cryptozoology) and have on demand radio about that one subject that will last me for years and years and years. I can download audiobooks for very cheap and my entertainment choices are limitless- In the mid 90s theres Bell for fringe topics.

So the people getting into this today either quickly realize they are going to be lost in the shuffle, work really hard and make little to no money OR they move on. So the ones that stay in this 'business' are seeking something different for the most part and by proxy are not going to be in the same league as what we had in the past.

Its an interesting discussion.

Thank you... truer words haven't been spoken.  You can see the same effect in the Music and Film industries as well.  It explains the declining quality of content in most entertainment, tbh.

Ever seen the film "Old Boy"?  Ghastly business, that.

Oh god, I remember watching that film at least a few dozen times back when the DVD first came out.  The American version was surprisingly good too, although I seem to remember them not going "all the way" at the end.  Or did they?

On a related note, this was also a good film back in the day.  Maybe the setting w/ this one is a bit too close to home.

It feels disgusting to even say, but this particularly dark scenario ran through my mind as soon as I started following this ordeal.

Not saying I believe this is the case, but apparently this might be a thing; I'll just leave this here -

Unless that voice talent, Ann B Leonard used to be an entertainer specializing in voices in a show on the strip...

I mean, you gotta be an actress (or drama queen) to create such an annoying voice full of over-annunciation and unnatural speech patterns.

That's really weird you say this.   Reading the post about how she's not a "real person", I had a flash of intuition that she's a much older woman doing a younger woman's voice.   I wonder.

The only time I called C2CAM, Art Bell had crazy Bob Larson on.  I was young, this was probably 97 or so, and I was mad as hell (pun intended).  When I finally got through, by pure accident I mixed up Art and Bob's names, and said something to the effect of "this Art guy is a total idiot"... when Art himself laughed and hung up on me.

The whole exchange was less than 10 seconds.  I felt like a dumb-ass, and had that "wow, I fucked up royally" feeling for a long while afterwards.   No screeners can be brutal.

After nearly a year of contemplation and half-assed planning, I got it together and started the MetalSlut podcast.  I'll be honest- a HUGE inspiration for doing this (initially) was hearing the constant suckage by jorch noary on a nightly basis, and thinking "gee whiz, not only would I do a better job, but SOMEONE needs to do a better job".  Of course, there are other great podcasts out there already doing justice to the art of the interview, but with so much suckage on a national level by GN...  What's a guy to do?  At one point I really wanted to do something similar to Art Bell's C2C, or even the Ian's C2C, but along the way... it morphed into this.  I'm only 4 shows in, so I don't even know where this is going.  I've also learned it's not always easy to stay attentive and on top of a guest (though I should give myself a break here- I self-engineer the whole show with a psychotic co-host), but I still have to say that the job performance by GN is inexplicably bad.  Still, I need to be a bit more challenging with my questions.  The pint here, really is to be the anti-noory in a way.  I should get some Hollywood "psychics" on debate the crap out of them.

Anyway, about the actual podcast... It's loosely based around upcoming bands and musicians in the LA area (not necessarily metal), but we've also got porn stars and strip club bouncers stopping by.  Check it out if you have a moment.   Episode #4 just went up and we're doing #5 tomorrow with a guy who's big in Aruba.

Do you... do you think it's starting to get to him? Sumpthin's gonna happen. I can feel it.

You know, it just might be.  In fact, I'd say it is.  Did you hear how flustered he got with that female caller tonight who insisted that we attacked Mars?  I really hope she was trolling him... if so, great job.  And to add to it, someone else called in, talked for a minute, and then patiently told Jorch that he shouldn't have been rude to the Mars lady, and that she was right.  You could tell he was caught off guard, sine the guy was able to repeat himself before getting cut.  I could almost hear the pain in GN's voice when immediately afterwards, he proclaimed "I guess it's just one of those nights".

It's been said here before, but I'm sure GN's daily, private life is one of epic sadness.  I'm guessing that the level of pathos, regret, and boorishness is so great, that you couldn't even script it.  If you were to make some kind of screenplay out of it, and DIDN'T make it a comedy, but rather a stark and honest look at a lonely, dim-witted man who benefits from "occupational welfare" lotto ticket of a lifetime... we'd probably be winning academy awards for it.  I'm thinking John C. Riley's cop character from "Magnnolia", but even more sad and boorish.  And not funny, nor loveable.  Damn, I think I've got enough for a script here.

This is what I came here for tonight, thanks for delivering. I knew that meteorite would result in some "Grade A Prime" idiocy.

I have not had the radio on, has Hoagland chimed in on how this is ET debris from the moon or something yet?

Oh no problem!  I actually wanted to check back in and report that at 5:59pm today, on KFI's afternoon show, Conway popped in with John and Ken, and they all had a SERIOUS laugh at Noory's ignorance from last night.  Particularly, they laughed about how he was totally clueless, yet knew about the Tunguska event, and even said "we're the last guys you want to have tell YOU about the news", clearly implying that he was out of his own supposed element, and it almost seemed like they were taking a jab at his alleged "prep time".  Not even kidding, they were openly mocking him on the air just now.  Way to go John and Ken!  I suspect that the lack of coverage last night, concerning the meteorite, was due to the fact that Noory was too embarrassed to even touch on it.

My god, is Jorch a tool...

He was just on KFI for the last few minutes of the Tim Conway jr. show, and Conway broke the "Russian meteorite" news to mr "in the know" Noory.  Jorch, despite his 8 hours of show prep, had no idea about this bit of breaking news, and proceeded to tell Conway that he must be talking about Tunguska.  Conway corrects him, and for a couple of minutes Jorch really thinks he's being joked on, and refuses to believe it.  After he apparently googles it (and this is the worst part), Snoory goes on to say "yeah I've been predicting this all along", and then throws out some laughably inaccurate scientific figures.  Such as; "if a meteorite the size of a basketball hit, it could take out a city".

Oh, fuck me sideways...  This dude is a poser.  And he sucks.

I listened to some of Wells' conversation with Howard Bloom in Saturday's show. Though Blooms commentary shredded many of Wells'  fringe nut theories on Obama, conspiracies, and the NWO,

And don't forget "big pharma".  It was nice hearing Bloom drop some rational insight, a true rarity for C2C these days.

BTW, if anyone is into a li'l more Jorch torture (Jorture?) once in awhile he'll do a pre-show chat with the Los Angeles affiliate (KFI AM 640) about 10 mins before C2C begins. Spoiler alert: it's just as bad as anything he does. He even sucks at simple patter!

You ever get the feeling that Tim Conway jr. also knows how much of a nincompoop Jorch is?  I definitely get the feeling that Wayne Resnick (the Sunday guy), gets it.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: Mike Siegel
January 03, 2013, 02:50:43 PM
Let me just say, I can appreciate a Mike Siegel sticky.  I know he was only at the helm for a few months, but this man wasn't entirely bad.  I remember him getting into it with a caller who had a UFO sighting, and essentially told the guy that his story contradicted itself, and he wasn't a reliable witness.  This led to other callers going at it during open lines and calling him out on his "lawyerness" and semeingly non-open minded attitude....  ohhhh, the hate.  He drew it from the audience in a concentrated form, like venom from a snakebite.  If that's not a reason to like the guy, what is?

However, in retrospect it's fairly obvious that the network's decision to go with the milquetoast, "open minded" Jorch wasn't in some way influenced by the audience's bad reaction to Siegel and his personality.

Isn't "Magnolia" one of the best films ever?  I remember seeing it in the theater, and I've watched the DVD countless times.  Yes, Aimee Mann's music in it is a great example of melancholy music.

Is JBW playing "no more tears" by Ozzy, and calling it "rocket fuel for the soul"?!?!  Rad.  Wow, I tried to shrug off the idea that Wells may be throwing passive-aggressive shots at sNoory, but this is hard to ignore.  Didn't Ian get reprimanded for playing Metallica?  I seriously remember I.P. saying that.  Hopefully he is making a pass at the throne, er, captain's chair  ::)  At lest the bumpers would be a bit more thrilling and rock-n-roll-y.

The guest seems less than interesting.  This is what C2C has boiled down to for me in recent times... geeking out on bumper music.

In person, I bet Snorge is a "psychic vampire".

Why just in person?  You could say Snoory is a "psychic vampire" on a massive, international scale.  What other title could you give to the manner in which he publicly conducts himself 5 nights a week?  If there's any truth to any of that spiritual energy stuff, he's definitely siphoning it off of America's dumb, elderly, ignorant, and sleepless.

Real talk:  I'm usually stoned out of my mind AND working on audio w/ headphones when C2C is on.  So, I'll catch a sentence here and there, but mostly it gets ignored or unheard.  However, when I do happen to listen to Jorch in the cold and sober light of day...  omg, it's appalling.  As we've all noticed, Jorch doesn't even make sense or try with his questions and banter most of the time.  It's hard to imagine that someone hasn't stepped up and "cleaned house" at clear channel.

you should get a live band together for your black metal stuff!!!

It's so funny you mention that, because I'm actually on it as we speak.  Here's a video from earlier this month...

Night of the Chupacapbra (Live) 12/8/2012

Oh btw, the song we're playing might relate, somehow.  Obviously, it was inspired by the Chucapbra of Art Bell's heyday.  Merry Xmas.

Thanks for asking about the details, and sorry it's taken so long to get back!

As Christmas day approaches, I had to churn out a few more "classics" and do a proper holiday EP.  Click on the garish graphic below for the band camp page.

1.Carol of the Bells 01:30
2.Bring a Torch Janette Isabella 02:22
3.Deck the Halls 02:49
4.Holy Night 01:39
5.Silent Night 02:44
6.Jingle Bells 02:17

Oh yes, DETAILS!  Where does one even begin?  You pretty much start with your MIDI composition, which you play on a keyboard, and quantize to taste.  Sometimes, just for shits and giggles, I'll use a dumb and boring synth patch just to get the part sequenced, and THEN I'll work on the timbre/sound.  From there, it's just being tasteful with your synth patches (which are all semi-programmed from scratch for the specific part), along with some half-decent mixing.  Just the standard compressors and EQ's in that dept., along with some spectral enhancement, reverb, and other stuff used sparingly.  They say arrangement is everything, and you really do have to be mindful of your parts, instrumentation and structure.  In this regard, you also have to choose or design some nice hits/crashes/swells for your transitions.  Drum Parts are relatively easy for the house, trance, or disco parts, while the "dubstep" is just some triplet grooves, for the most part.  The 3/4 timing in "Carol of the Bells" was no sweat either, but maybe it's kind of drum n' bass sounding?   ???  "Bring a Torch Janette Isabella" is also 3/4, but has a more traditional disco feel.  Had to try and keep that one "K-Pop" sounding!  And I'm not Korean!  Obviously, any loop samples you're using at this point (drums only) are going to be chopped up, cropped, and re-arranged.   Most of my drums are sequenced like everything else, though.  Maybe I'll bullet point some more interesting things:

• My MIDI "controller" is a Roland Fantom - I also use it to sequence stuff when my computer is busy playing netflix.
• The reggae guitar on the intro of "Holy Night" is real, and was performed by the esteemed yet deposed Prince I&I ASIanman of Jah-Rastafari.  The Prince is currently in contact with C2C for an upcoming guest spot.
• I use Massive (the vst soft synth) for a bunch of parts, but a host of other vst synths are used too.
• "Carol of the Bells" contains a sample of a human scream, to signify the true horror of the holiday season.
• It was all done in "in the box" using REAPER.  Pro-Tools was not involved
• If you want to see a complete gear list, check out my studio webstie at www.MusicStudio13.com

With that said, you should probably ignore everything I just said and check out the music straight away.  Unlike my rambling and near-meaningless technical details, the actual music is kind of rad.

10 minutes into the segment and this guy is so disjointed, I'm convinced he's smoking meth.  sNoory's already had to break his laissez faire policy and stoped him from doing math on the air, as well as said "this will make more sense if people can see pictures".  wtf is this guy going on about?

#27
I wonder if it will be anything like the article by the Atlantic, where they called him an "uneven broadcaster".

yes indeed, a caller mentioned Art and then Noory obviously utitlized his delay dump so we didn't hear what the caller said after that, only Noory did.
might have been one of Noory's 'haters' playing a trick on him pretending he was Art?
Noory can't take a joke so he dumps them cold...

Totally.  I've heard it before, but what got me here was the weird glitch in the middle of noory's sentence.  It's almost as if it was dumped by someone other than noory, like the board op or perhaps Tommy.
#29
Did sNoory just awkwardly dump a caller after he asked if george was Art?  Magic 8 ball says yes... The audio seemed to glitch for a second as thenooron was in the middle of a sentence.  Wonder what that was all about?
#30
Am I the only one who enjoys Bloom?  A voice of reason is always welcome, in my book.  It's kind of nice to hear snoory's juvenile belief in god (and the callers) being repeatedly smacked down.
