Netanyahu back from brink with dazzling election win; now two court battles loom

Assuming that Monday night’s TV exit polls are borne out as the actual results flow in over the coming hours, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who campaigned with a near-desperate vigor in recent weeks, has achieved an extraordinary victory in Israel’s third election inside a year.

Clinging to the premiership, on the brink of political oblivion after the last round less than six months ago, he has reestablished Likud as Israel’s biggest political party and boosted the bloc of parties he leads to an impregnable position.

Rather than his own position being under threat, it is his rival Benny Gantz, the Blue and White leader who has failed three times to defeat him, whose diverse alliance of anyone-but-Bibi parties could splinter and whose own political future is now in doubt.

Netanyahu’s victorious rebound is all the more remarkable because, in the interim since September’s elections â€" in which Blue and White outscored Likud, and Gantz passed up the opportunity to rotate the leadership of the country â€" the prime minister has been indicted in three criminal cases. His trial is due to start at Jerusalem District Court in just two weeks’ time. Self-evidently, this did not deter his voters.

Harvard Law School Holds Lecture on Police Abolition

Brooklyn College Professor Alex S. Vitale spoke to students at Harvard Law School on Thursday about the potential benefits of abolishing American police forces.

Vitale serves as the coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College and on the New York State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He also consults various international human rights organizations and police departments.

“In too many of our big cities, politicians who claim to be our friends â€" who come out on the picket line with us when someone is killed by the police â€" go back to City Hall and vote to hire more police instead of expanding community-based mental health service, instead of creating drug treatment on demand,”

“Defining what the scope of abolition actually is is where there are gaps,” he said. “For example, when one person means abolition â€" is that a complete end of what we call policing, or is there still some function in society, someone that responds to you with a gun?”

In his talk, Vitale acknowledged the impossibility of eradicating all police services at once. However, he maintained that there is a great need for systemic change.

“No one is talking about, ‘tomorrow we flip the switch and there are no police,’” he said. “The reality is we have a massive infrastructure of policing and criminalization, and we need strategies to get out of this mess, and those strategies do not include implicit bias training, community policing, body cameras, et cetera.”

Former pilot says he knows where doomed MH370 wreckage is located

Byron Bailey is so confident he knows where the MH370 wreckage is he'd bet his house on it.

The former pilot with more than 50 years of experience has been saying for years investigators have been searching in the wrong place and they should in fact be looking south of the search site.

To be precise â€" latitude 39'10 S,88'18E.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) search was based on the assumption the plane ended as a ghost flight, or a death dive, meaning the pilot was also dead when the aircraft ran out of fuel at 40,000 feet.

The final end-of-flight scenario is crucial to establishing the possible location of the MH370 wreckage.

In the first part of Sky News' gripping documentary MH370: The Untold Story, which is available to stream on Foxtel Now, Mr Bailey said there could not have been a death dive and believes Captain Zaharie Shah glided the plane as far as possible and landed it on the water outside the search zone.

"All the evidence points to the fact it was ditched," he said. "I'm sure the captain was trying to ditch the aircraft in as far south, remote location as possible, and leave as little wreckage as possible that would sink."

Mr Bailey said the search came within about 30km of where he thought the wreckage was.

"If I'm wrong then it probably means the aircraft has been taken by aliens or is sitting in a hangar somewhere in Kazakhstan," he said.

"I'm so sure. I'd bet my house on it. As far as I'm concerned it's game over, we know where it is, we've always known where it is."
