The Bell Family is well indeed! My new show will air from 9PM-1AM PT. If Sirius would free me from my non-compete it would have been 7-10 PT but while I understand both CC and Sirius did what they had to do, Karma is a Bitch. It will Stream for free and Podcasts will be available.

Art Bell Leaves SiriusXM

artbellArt Bell, the radio icon that joined the SiriusXM line-up on September 16th is leaving the air after just a month and a half.  While passionate satellite radio fans may not want to hear it, his reasons for leaving boiled down to three main things:

    SiriusXM’s web player is notoriously unreliable, causing a loss of subscribers and a degraded listening experience for those who remain listening online.
    For a “caller driven” show, the caller pool for art’s show is just too small.
    International listeners have no legitimate way to hear the show.

This is not the first time that we have heard issues relating to the Internet platform offered up by SiriusXM.  There have been a host of issues from the functionality to being booted off, to having longer shows reset from the beginning after an hour and a half, making it almost impossible to listen to a 2 hour show on demand.

When signed by SiriusXM, Bell had only glowing things to say:

    “SiriusXM is the perfect fit for me and my new show Art Bell’s Dark Matter,” said Art Bell. “Though invisible, dark matter accounts for gravitational forces observed in the universeâ€"expect these forces to be at work in the uncensored, unrestricted creative arena of satellite radio, a medium with truly extraterrestrial reach.”

It would appear that after just a short period of time, second thoughts emerged.

The departure of Bell, as unfortunate as it is, should be a signal to SiriusXM.  The company has a compelling product, great content, and great potential, but in some ways has lost the edge that it once had.  The frustrations of Bell can be heard on other channels as well.  Opie & Anthony, Howard Stern, Jay Thomas, and others have all at times expressed a great deal of frustration.  In some ways, the complaints of on air personalities ring back to the old FM days of terrestrial radio, a path that many consumers and on air personalities could not wait to get away from.

Bell is a radio icon, and will continue his show on the web.  It is unfortunate that SiriusXM could not match up to his needs.  Consumers can only hope that SiriusXM takes this issue seriously.  There are indeed issues with the Internet platform as well as sound quality.  Yes, Bell was probably expecting too many callers too quickly and did not give his show time to develop an audience from the pool of those willing to pay for radio, but Bell’s issues should not and can not be ignored.

From an investors perspective, there are not really any silver linings here.  No, the departure of bell will not send the equity crashing, but the implications are not good either.  If a personality such as Bell can not draw an audience with him, what does it say about other content?  If a personality like Bell has a solution on the web that meets his needs better, what does that say about getting more talent to come to satellite and stay?

Whether we as investors like it or not, the sex appeal of satellite radio is not what it used to be.  Satellite radio seems to have lost the leading edge.  No, SiriusXM is not going to fail, but the cache is not what it once was.  The satellite empire is not crumbling, but it is at a point where it may need to “re-invent” itself.

There will be a day when Stern retires.  There may be a day when Opie & Anthony have had enough.  As each year passes it seems that SiriusXM is becoming more like the FM radio we all wanted to tear apart.  Yes, SiriusXM is better, but the options for listeners are increasing and SiriusXM needs to pay attention sooner rather than later.  The company has done so many wonderful things in getting to where it is.  It may be time to up the ante again.

The biggest ef up i ever herd art bell do came on the night of August 19, 1998.  He was interviewing 2 people about NDE's  and apparently sometime before the show started one of the guests said "just between you and me" not wanting to go public that she would try the drug x to have an NDE experience. During the show Art forgot and blabbed it on the radio and she was hot LOL

George Noory to rank above Rush Limbaugh? I just herd on Alex Jones show from 2/3/11 that George Noory and Coast to Coast am is very close to being Number 1 world wide topping even Rush Limbaugh.  He has surpassed the number or synicates that Art Bell had.

Among the special clips featured during the program were Art announcing that he'd accidentally glued his lips together, his report of Richard C. Hoagland's heart attack, an interview excerpt with Malachi Martin, an hysterical former Area 51 employee, the Area 51 pilot, as well as calls from JC, Edna and Oscar. Live callers also phoned in to share their favorite memories listening to Art.

Upon his retirement in 2007, Art Bell continues to be associated with Coast to Coast AM, the nationally syndicated overnight radio program he created and made famous, as a guest host.  In addition, he will continue to do the shows he made famous such as Ghost to Ghost on Halloween, the Annual New Year’s Eve Prediction Show, etc.  Known for his spontaneous and compelling conversations about all things unexplained, Bell has a keen intellect and an unpretentious curiosity for the bizarre.  With his style that reflects the calm qualities of the night, Bell once had a caller who claimed he was “the six-fingered alien hybrid.”  Bell’s response to him was “cool.”
As a child, Bell experienced a gypsy lifestyle since his dad was a marine colonel and his mom was a drill sergeant.  Following their footsteps, he pursued a career in the military that allowed him the opportunity to create an on-base pirate radio station.  After the military, he worked as a rock jock and chief engineer at 25 different radio stations around the world.  KSBK/Okinawa, the only English-language station in Asia, was where he earned a Guinness World Record for staying on air for 116 hours and 15 minutes.  And while at KENI/Anchorage, he organized a fundraiser and chartered a DC-8 to rescue 130 Vietnamese orphans stranded in Saigon at the end of the war.  American families eventually adopted each child.
Bell then moved on to television in the early 1980s where in Las Vegas he helped build
“Time Mirror Cable” which is now “Cox Cable.”  However, his passion for radio eventually lead him to KDWN/Las Vegas in 1985 where he hosted an overnight talk program that could be heard in 13 western states.

In 1993, Coast to Coast AM was born and the Chancellor Broadcasting Company began syndicating the show out of KDWN.  About a year later, a home studio was built in Pahrump, Nevada where the show originated.  In 1998, Premiere Radio Networks purchased the Chancellor Broadcasting Company with Bell’s show on about 400 stations.
Plagued with ongoing back problems, Bell decided to retire and named George Noory as his successor who took over in January 2003.  But by September of that same year, Bell’s long-standing bond with his audience and his undying passion for radio became evident when he returned to the air waves as the weekend host of Coast to Coast AM.
Bell has been profiled on Today and Larry King Live and has also been featured in Time Newsweek, People, Maxim, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Washington Post.  In addition, he made a guest appearance on NBC’s Millennium.  In 1997 and 1999, Bell’s peers at the National Association of Broadcasters nominated him for the Marconi Radio Award in the “Network/Syndicated Personality of the Year” category.  In 2007, Bell was honored with the “2007 R&R News/Talk Radio Lifetime Achievement Award.”

It's time to stop supporting Coast to Coast am once and for all. If Art Bell is not apart of it, then its not Coast To Coast. Art Bell put his heart and soul in that show and this dickhead Noory has destroyed it compleatly.

Looking back Art should have ended the show after the Mike Seagle days.

As of now if you need to d/l anything from the Coast to Coast website, I think we should d/l it and close any accounts to Streamlink or anything Coast To Coast.

Art Bell had a show called Area 2000 not sure when it aried, not sure if it was was the beginning of Coast to Coast or if it was the beginning to Dreamland. I would love to hear these shows. Anyone have any information about this Program?

GIS  10 year anniversary is this year.  It was 10 years ago October 30th 1999 when The GIS first appeared on Coast To Coast AM with Art Bell.  I don't know what the chances are But maybe if we all e-mailed Art He would come back and host them on the 10th anniversary this year. Im listening to the George Lutz interview about amityville.  Art mentions that he has a picture on his website wich is no longer online, but the picture shows a child at the top of a stairwell when no children were present.
