There was a very nostalgic piece of Art's radio I found on youtube, also played by Nick the Rat a couple weeks ago. From context, it seems to be Art's show opener on KSBK Okinawaw circa the Spring of 1969. We know that because Crimson and Clover was #1 and because the rainy season was in full force. Its an instrumental, of course. Any ideas? The radio was fond of instrumentals back then, and I kind of miss them.

Random Topics / What do you collect?
April 21, 2017, 10:47:36 AM
Everyone collects something.   I started this thread as a catch-all for members that collect things not otherwise specifically threaded. (i.e. Rocks and Gems, videogames, etc.) and the other categories, such as Brig's prize laptop (Bellgab memorabilia) or a generalized paranormal and cat hoard* (we know who)    *municipal definitions are typically anything more than about 4 or 5 cats, excluding recent litters

For a few, it may be part confessional if they collect jars of fingernails or dirty magazines, but hopefully not both. It might even be a chance for some to show how nerdy they really are. This can include digital collections as well as physical.

I'd guess about half of us have a digital collection (or cassettes) of Art's old shows, no surprise.
*******************************************************************************

I'll start. I collect music that had airplay from the 60s through late 80s timeframe, mostly. Space books and pictures (about 50 GB, so far) and Space Shuttle flown type items. If I need a new everyday or household item, I think "What would NASA certify for flight?" and find the item directly or choose something that would likely meet Mil-Spec or medical grade they would select from. (Hint: 95% of these things you can't find at Wal-Mart or Target.) Its sometimes tricky to find the right aluminum comb or specific models of Thinkpads.

Below is a Grid computer and some other items. The Grid models flew from STS-9 in 83' until about 1996 when the Thinkpads started flying by the dozen. (755, 760XD, A31p, T61p)

Here is a great example of one of the great (and one of the original) shock jock duos from Chicago - Steve Dahl and Garry Meier. At  the end of the Iranian Hostage crises in January 1981 and musing on how much the hostages must miss American food, they decided to prank call Iran and try to send the hostages some buckets of Islamic Fried Chicken.

While a million Chicago-land listeners found it a hoot, the station later got a warning letter from the State Department. Do you think anyone would dare call North Korea today to send a pizza to the detained prisoners?

How accurate is the information "6 Members and 22 Guests viewing this board/topic"?  I suspect it is a  time setting (i.e. last 5 minutes) and includes page reloads, web crawlers that are not really viewing, etc.

Everything is not OK in UFOlogy if you don't drink MUFON's Kool-Aid.  I happened upon this interview last night, and think this is a must listen for all interested in UFOlogy, MUFON, the KGRA online network and paranormal radio in general.  The implications are serious if Lorien Fenton and Erica Lukes blow the whistle on MUFON, KGRA and a California based radio host that has allegedly stalked Erica Lukes. Make your own guesses in your mind on who this might be, but I'll bet  many out there can figure this out.  How can anything productive get done when we have a cesspool like this?

Both of them know MUFON needs major changes, and I would suggest it needs complete restructuring, new bylaws, and so forth. The Elaine Douglas revelations are just the tip of the iceberg.  I've already made my opinions known about KGRA going to the dogs.

The podcast is down the page.   The main part of the interview with Lukes by Lorien Fenton starts about ten minutes into this. If you feel moved by the spirits of the activism of these gals drop them a line of support :) The research needs to stop going down a black hole guarded by shadowy figures that green light crap programs like Hangar 1.

In this topsy turvy world, I think its healthy to have a few escapist fantasies. I will start with mine. I call it the Sunshine Express:

1. Build 4 nice identical floor plan 3 Bedroom brick houses (typical US value $350,000) each in the following cities: Las Vegas NV, Sydney NSW Australia, Honolulu HI (will cost more on this one) and Salvador, Brasil.

2. Outfit each of these houses with a late model Honda Accord and a year round caretaker and gardener that could cook when you were there. Optimize landscaping for ultimate green and keeping something blooming year round.

3. Stay at the house during 3 months house is most sunny *Las Vegas - May, Jun, Jul *Sydney - Nov Dec Jan *Honolulu - Feb, Mar, Apr *Salvador - Aug, Sep, Oct - The N. Hemisphere months of Spring and Autumn would probably involve extra commutes to alternate locations

4. If localized weather predicts more than 24 hours of cloudiness, rain, or high winds commute (during night hours via jet) to the house currently with the sunniest weather and return once situation has ended. Videoconference from home offices to all other cities in which you have business and only show up in person if weather is ideal.

I personally despise autumn and winter, rain, cloudiness and snow and would make ending them in my life a personal priority. I am otherwise not all that materialistic and could use the 4 houses and caretakers as tax write-offs. I would still shop at places like Target for most things.

What is your wealthy lifestyle plan?

Technology / Photobucket Search Syntax
June 06, 2016, 07:48:14 PM
Is it just me or is there no filtering in searches on Photobucket? Its seems "additive" not limiting.  Like if I wanted to see a collection of pictures of the V-2 Rocket at the National Air and Space Museum  and searched "national air and space museum german V-2" I would get pictures of every air and space photo ever taken since the Wright Brothers, streudel, and spaced-out people in random museums in a grand total of 70 million images. Iv'e tried tricks with quotes and "AND" or syntax, hashtags and nothing seems to improve performance (if anything it makes the results worse, lol)....any tips from pros that have worked with search engines?

Incidentally, Flickr actually seems to more or less function for searches, perhaps they have a very different kind of search engine?

Photobucket seems to be the digital photo equivalent of the landfill!

Technology / Repair idea - Broken Car Stero AUX Jack
October 30, 2015, 09:58:06 PM
Well this Friday night in order to enjoy Time Traveling in the car, I needed to fix the AUX Jack on the faceplate of my car stereo.  With those who own Sonys this is kind of an Achilles Heel that forces most people just go get a new system - ARGHHH nope! Not gonna do that. 1) Unscrew the backing screws and keep them from rolling about with a piece of tape 2) There was a wire already broken and one very loose, disconnect (making note of position) and strip the microwires (carefully) with the nail clippers if you dont have a small enough wire guage stripper - These are about 30 gauge standed - tedious! 4) resolder wires to jack and do a continuity check (wise option) and reassemble.

If Plug in is loose:
Step 2A Use a thumbtack is a lever for the two small bent pins that connect to the two channels - carefully bend those back with some leverage and test fit with an existing plug until it feels like a solid fit.

OK, here's my situation: In my city there are 3 long form Talk stations that are very saturated.  One is iHeart, one is Clear Channel (that carries C2C - no matter what you feel about that, LOL) and and the Salem Media flagship station that carries Mike Medved syndicated in the desired time slot.

Should we in this instance:
1) Contact all 3 talk stations
2) Contact all stations AM & FM regardless of format (so-called "shotgun marketing" approach)
3) Other

Is there an expert radio person on site that can diplomatically spell out the best strategy or pm me with a quick primer? Do we have an offsite group where such things are discussed (ie on Skype?)

If nothing else this will lead to some cool sound bites, but I think there could be more than a grain of truth to this callers claim. Why are so many molecular biologists, geneticists and holistic practioners dying? The drought is persisting in the middle of an El Nino year. And recently the law was passed that GMOs do not have to be labeled!
The statistically significant transfer of former Monsanto executives and lawyers into the upper levels of the Federal Government wreaks of dirty pool although it doesn't prove wrong doing. The cross-breeding program is a very popular hypothesis on the ETs or "the others".  The word hybrid came out of obscurity in biology and now you have hybrid everythings!

And then comes this caller! The critical questions come to mind. Its not like you need a wiretap that takes 30 seconds (that meme is outdated even for telephone) - so why the hurry? The NSA would know the location of this caller, but not necessarily his identity. Why would they keep one of the most sensitive documents in the world on a server? Was what he was doing called a "Classification Review"?  Will the ETs then avoid countries that have outlawed GMOs?  If anything the GMOs would make for a worse immune system - so are we lowering our immune systems to meet the ETs crappy imune system?

At any rate, I made a transcript to refer to during the debate. Of course if you want to hear the exciting audio, become a Time Traveler ;)

The Classified Classified Whistleblower, second to last caller open lines  on7/31/2015 show, actual time was about 11:57 Pacific Time.
ART: Somebody called Classified Classified has tempted me to answer. That’s an interesting , plus there’s a picture of a grey on this guys, person’s Skype.  So Classified Classified, Hello.
CC: Mr. Bell can you hear me?
ART: I can.
CC: I have to keep this very brief, so I’ll get to the point. (Sigh) I was involved with an organization that acted to classify the NSA servers. Top Secret…
ART: Seriously?
CC: [unintelligible, compartmentalized?]
CC: Can You Hear Me?
ART: Yeah! Seriously, you, you...?
CC: Yeah and NSA monitors Skype so I’ll have to keep this quick.
ART: I know they do. OK.
CC: I came across [martial?] documents that appeared to be evidence of the United States government in compliance with extraterrestrials. Using genetically modified foods colloquially known as GMO.  The goal was to experiment with modifying human DNA so extraterrestrials and the human’s immune systems don’t attack each other on upon contact. This is to facilitate their cross-breeding agenda.
ART: Oh my God…
CC: These extraterrestrials were trying to stop organic food movement, because they want everyone to eat these GMOs. That is what it appeared. This could be just disinformation, this could be real, but that’s what it showed when we got into their servers. Uh, The US government is using High Frequency Active Auroral research program,  H.A.A.R.P. to cause the devastating drought on the west coast so that they can bankrupt and buy out the organic farms to keep prices high.  I have got to go right now. Goodbye, have a great show.
ART: Wow! Well… I’m gonna say that’s unusual and we may hear from him again. Or we may never hear from him again. No idea who that was, just called himself Classified Classified. And I hope we hear from him again, frankly.

I wrote this up not to be preachy, but to give some pointers on how you can help make everyone look good in the call-in portions of Midnight in the Desert. Some younger callers in all honesty might not know how a good call-in portion should sound as they are only used to calling friends on Skype. The talk show format to them might be something more associated with their parent's generation and they may be innocent and green when it comes time to talk to Art and/or his guest. The online streaming shows are also new to everyone and Art in his 3-hour format and large audience is under tighter time pressure more so than ever.  Those who saw the periscope saw him waving his hands as if to say "Come on, lets speed it up, folks. Get on the Ball"

How to sound like a Pro on Midnight in the Desert
1. Call the right line! Know which is relevant for you and write it down or put it on your device. The US and Canada is MITD51 and the rest of the world is MITD55 on Skype.  It is easier just to memorize ;)
2. Write down and/or practice your question. Make your question as short and as clear as possible. When you say your question aloud you may decide there is a better way to ask your question. Further, if you have a story write it down and think about which parts of it are relevant to convey the meaning and feel of the experience.  Cross-off the rest.  50 words is often better than 100. Rehearse it!
3. Listen carefully. There is a good chance unless your question is unique that Art or a previous caller already asked it. A well thought out question makes everyone look good!
4. Use your headset microphone or other quality set-up on a laptop. Most laptops do not have a quality built in microphone.  Using the laptop speakers with an open mic may create an echo that sounds bad.
5. Test your equipment. Use Skype’s Echo/Test call service and listen to yourself. Adjust your volume settings if necessary and save them when you have it as best you can get it. Many of Art's professional guests do a sound check before each show. Know the distance from the microphone where you sound your best.
6. Be Prepared.  Take the dog out, rock the baby to sleep, go to the washroom, put your snacks down, dispose of any gum you might be chewing before dialing up. Professional broadcasters know that eating/drinking dairy potentially makes one sound more stuffy and phlegmatic - avoid dairy in the hour or so before a call if you want to sound your best.  Fix any squeaks in the chair, unplug nearby fans, shut the window if near traffic and make an effort to reduce background noise.
7. Have a quick way to extinguish the streaming on your device. While the phone or Skype is ringing place your cursor pointer right over the streaming Window's "X" or Close or Mute Button. Prepare it such with one left click the show's audio is extinguished as soon as you hear Art's voice.  You will NOT have time to play with the volume.  Practice it if in doubt.
8. Be Polite. Don't attack the guest or Art, but do intelligently and calmly challenge what they say if you disagree. And follow Art's cardinal rule: No Swearing.  There is no need to do this. The English language has far more creative and powerful adjectives.
9. Take a quick response off air.  If you have a simple straightforward question, take your response off the air.  At the end of the response, Art is going to ask if you have another question for the guest. If you don't have one you will likely sound dumb-founded. If you don’t have another question just thank the guest so Art can quickly get to the next caller.
10. Keep Greetings and Salutations Brief.  A quick "Hi, Art, Roswells" or "glad your back" type phrase is all you need.  A long-winded trip down memory lane that isn't related to the guest is rude to everyone. Say the quick greetings and briskly get to the question. No need to say “My question is…” just the guest’s name and question.  Save the random things for “Open Lines â€" Anything Goes” unless something big is happening such as a live UFO outside.

I've started this thread for all who wish to keep track Midnight in the Desert bumper music and make commentary on it. As I understand it Art is in general avoiding pre-1972 selections.  There is another thread that details his bumper music in general and allows for BellGab member suggestions. Please continue to post those suggestions there if this is where Art is looking.  This thread is purely for documenting the current 175 tunes on Art's player for Midnight in the Desert. This is tonights list.
