I had foolishly been trying to be a "productive freelancer."  I should have known better.

I find Paglinni to be very interesting, for some reason I can't quite put my finger on.  Perhaps it's that show she did about spirt sex w/ Art.  :o

Hit rate or not, EP is a hoot.  Though, I don't think you need to be psychic to say that there'll be fires in California.

I'd like to know whether EP is more/less accurate than Cliff, the Time Monk and his trusty web-bots from HalfPastHuman.  In a perfectly paranormal universe, they'd be tapping into the very same woo-woo from differnt directions.

I rather liked Ian's interview with the Fourth Turning guy a few months ago.  I could tell during the interview that he felt himself starting to suck a bit and then recovered it -- that's the key, self-awareness.

There was something going around shortly after Ramona's death where someone did reverse-speech on that show he did where he annouced that he was getting remarried.  It was damn creepy, and not flattering, but the subconscious is like that.  I don't think DJO did it, but I suppose the implication is that he was invovled somehow.

No one is safe from reverse-speech.  His reversals of other C2C guests must have felt like a betrayal to Art, but DJO really does seem like a guy who wants to know the truth.  All Art wanted to hear was backwards baby babble and DJO wanted to get to the heart of some very serious stuff.  They butted horns, and it was Art's show.

Honestly, I'm still surprised that he's not been interviewed by Snoory.  Then again, he has some of the WORST charlatains on (Sylvia Browne, etc.)  I'd love to hear some Snoory reversals -- I really wonder if he knows how much he sucks.  The reversals he did of Art suggest that he knew damn well that some of his most popular guests were full of poo.  As for having a big ego, I'd expect that of a guy who built a radio empire -- 'nuff said.  Art still rules -- and leaves it up to us to decide.

Oh, and my partner reminded me, John Keel.  He's a clever guy and would not willingly suffer George Noory.

Radio and Podcasts / Art Bell

He doesn't care about Hollywood, he wants to know about physics and the big questions.  What made the show great is to contemplate some very weird stuff that was a tangent from something that you needed a few brain cells to rub together to get.  I mean, he has all kinds of scientists on and it's not boring.  Only Art could do that.

With some actual opinions of his own and some very sensible rules for good radio conduct, he presided over an orderly nut house.  Like a really good party that hovers right on the edge of chaos, but no one ever has to call the cops.

He travelled, he lived and he loved.  Only interesting people can do interesting radio.  Hence, the Noory problem.

Random Topics / Open Lines
April 07, 2008, 11:12:33 PM
Without them, there is little of the raw spontenaity that made C2C truly great.  There'd be no JC were it not for open lines, for instance.  People respect bravery if they realize it or not, and Art is the bravest man in radio.  He knew that on some level or another, the raw emotion made for good and compelling radio -- the sort that kept me tuned in every night since that first night I heard him talking about UFOs and taking unscreened calls while I tested out my new shortwave in a tent perched pecariously close to the Mendenhal Glacier (picking up a doubled freq from KOMO - 2M was the lowest freq on that box and Art asking someone about having sex w/ aliens the very first sound I ever heard out of it - I was in love w/ DX and C2C from the first).

And why'd he do it?  Becuse he loves radio.  Anyone who's ever done is knows how poorly it pays.  He had 500 affiliates and still drove a Geo Metro.  He wanted those calls unscreaned because, like Hunter S. describes in "Fear in Loathing in Las Vegas," he wanted to be right on the vein of the American Dream (or the very weird sub-conscious cousin of it).  He knew that the truth lies between prepared speech and gibberish.  What he got from his callers was raw and real.  Quite simply, he wanted to know and wanted to take us with him.  Together, we'd bust these mysteries open.  We'd call down the UFOs, force disclosure and determine if there's life after death.

AS for his calls being screened now, well, it sure didn't feel like it at the time, but the 90s sure seem like the halcyon days of another era now, don't they?  America isn't the same anymore, and maybe Art just feels a bit broken down by it all.   It was fun to take the ride up with him and Ramona.  Sometimes it just feels like I'm watching a reunion tour that exists only to make the yacht payment.  Maybe he feels the same way, too.

Regardless, that there ever were real open lines was giddy and exciting -- I'm glad I heard it.

Knowing George, she p'bly just refused to flirt w/ him on the air or something.  His lack of interest in the subjet keeps him from having good guests on; it's why he always has the same ones on.  Sylvia was just really easy to hack off so he could appear like he's a tough guy.  She's collateral damage in Snoory Land

Archive of Old Threads / Re: Ok so here is the poll

I wouldn't shoot ya -- when Art is going on for an hour or more about Cats or potatoes or having Ed Dames on AGAIN, Ian does win.  Not all of Ian's shows mind you (Rock n' Roll anything is a pass in my book), but when he's on his game, though different, it's good radio that I'm not embarrased to share with others.

I also think George Knapp is a hell of a smart guy, but I just wish he could think on his feet a little better and had a better radio presence.  Love him or hate him, you always know it's Ian when he's talking.

Perhaps for the next quiz it could be worst host, other than Noory -- I liked Hilly Rose, but he was an aural Quaalude.

Regarding the Oates interview, I listened to the whole 21 Apr 2006 show and didn't hear it.  Another date, perhaps?

Unlike GN, George Knapp is a clever and intelligent guy, who seems to be all about telling the truth publicly -- sort of a basic thing for a real journalist.  My partner was in contact with him for some time about doing a graphic novel about Skinwalker Ranch.  The owners nixxed it eventually, but they still chat by email occasionally and GK seems genuniely interested in getting these stories out so there can be some real and thoughtful inquiry about it.

I would, however, say that GK doesn't have the best radio voice or pacing that I've ever heard.  I'd say that's pretty normal for an author, being one myself.  I still enjoy his shows, though I think Ian asks the best questions.

Anyone but George Noory -- Art's troubles may have opened the door for someone to kill the show, but GN continues to twist the knife 6 days per week.

Thanks so much for the link!  The implications of his research are profound -- if it were widespread it'd be like a society that was suddenly introduced to telepathy -- the implications for civil society are incredible.

When dating a few years back, I seriously considered asking any potential suitors to send an audio clip describing themselves.  Sanity prevaled and I shortly met a fellow who started one of our first converstaisons by saying, "ever listen to Art Bell?"  Four years later we still live together w/ our twin BayGen radios.  ;)

If the colour purple, terrible artwork, flaming and spinning gifs and horrible HTML 1.0 sites were banned tomorrow, we'd be hard-pressed to find anything out about most guests.  What the heck is up w/ this?  Is the sort of mind that has an eye for design simply not the sort of person who gets into Forteana?

I mention this because I'll hear a gues that sounds reasonable, go to their website and be visually assaulted with a bunch of crap I'd never even pass along to a like-minded friend.  It actually makes it kind of hard to take some of these folks seriously and even harder to actually get a proper discussion about the topic in question started.  What is up w/ this?

Any ideas?

I enjoyed the hell out of the Ingo Swan interview a few years ago, but Dr. Doom and many of his coleauges are impressively deluded huckseters, IMHO.  However, the idea that this could be a real thing keeps nagging me.  Is there anyone out there who is actually doing some real RV work?

I just heard the Mel's hole shows again, and I really want to know what happened to him.

Thank you for this forum to vent.

GN does have the occasional good guest on.  That said, he actively runs away from good stories.  My partner contacted him about doing a show about Nazi flying saucers and the Battle of Los Angeles, that he'd been bringing back to life in his first comic of his very own (after being a DC artist for over 15 years) and the only thing he could say was, #1: Can you get me Stan Lee?  and #2: can you draw me as a superhero?

He eventuallly did the interview w/ local guy Clyde Lewis (Ground Zero Radio), and it was very cool, but GN seems much more in love w/ Hollywood than actually getting to the bottom of the paranormal.  For that, he earns the SUCK label.

C2C has gotten dumber, because GN has driven off the clever audience members with his aggressive stupidity.  TV deserves him.
#19
He's supposed to be a professional broadcaster.  My dog could do a better job.  I'm callin' SUCK on that.

I mean, he was given the most popular late night show ever and he has run it into the ground, causing the audience to get dumber by a factor of about 20, since only crazies and the senile can't tell how stupid he is.  All the clever folks only show up for Art or Knapp nights.

George's conduct with the show is like someone who can be angry while petting puppies -- it shouldn't be possible, but there he is.  The paranormal should sell itself.  This guy couldn't sell crack in Compton.  He's dumber than a yoghurt.

Radio and Podcasts / Ian Punnett

Yes, I know he doesn't exactly have the same style as Art, and he does do some very silly shoes, but he does ask some hard questions.  If his guests are waffling, he'll call 'em out.  In fact, he might actually be a bit better at exposing his guests than Art is.  Perhaps that's why some of the more frequents guests that GN (or Ass Hat, as I like to call him) has on don't get Ianized.

That said, I wish he treid a little harder during the first hour.  Still, I appreciate his midwestern sense of humour, that I know some others don't get.  I really like that he's freindly and rigorous at the same time.

What do y'all think about Ian?  I was really hopeful that he'd have been Art's replacement.  I occasionally listen to GN/AH shows when he's got an interesting guest, but can be heard to groan outloud whenever he asks one of his patently dumb questions.  It's like tortue, unless the guests actually make fun of him (George Ure and Cliff from 4 March 2008 leap to mind) and he doens't even get that he's just been smacked down.  Unlike GN/AH, that's good stuff.

You know, I'd really like to have Ian interview the banned guest, David John Oates.  I saw him shortly before he was banned and, I thought it was fascinating.  Some of his reversals of Bush Jr. and Cheney are super creepy.
