Since our resident Science Apologist has abdicated it is left to me to point out that it is very much in the nature of science to adjust to changing information, particularly when dealing with a crisis whose nature is largely unknown, and that by first herding people into their homes and then shooing them outside as studies warrant it proves is is not in the service of any particular ideology but is, rather, for the most part, sincerely trying to help.

Things like the park and beach closures (and now the smoking guidance) were criticized early for not being evidence-based -- there were precious few documented cases of people catching it in the open air -- and were probably just bureaucrats panicking and shutting down everything they could get their hands on.  Or, in the case of smoking, parroting received wisdom that kind of made sense until surprising developments intervened.

But intervene they did, the new info is out and not being suppressed despite the fact that it contradicts generations of official programming in the case of smoking and, in the case of sunlight and Vitamin D, despite really unpleasant associations with race and skin color.

That is why I can't take the idea of a conspiracy seriously.  There is no official line, half the states are doing one thing and half another, guidance is wildly contradictory, and, outside a few earnest liberal enclaves, there isn't a prayer people will accept the more draconian prescriptions of contact-tracing which is the scariest thing on offer.  On the national level, the government has not waited for it but has moved on.  But take heart, there are tales of bureaucratic boobery and official hypocrisy aplenty and those never get old.

  he is an under-appreciated actor. So many good roles and always shows a believable gravitas of knowledge, with underlying threat, in his roles. But done in a downhome manner.

I will when they ban easy-listening, banal piano music underneath every company commercials from insurance to Frtio-Lay telling me how "we are all in this together" and that, even a lawn pest service, are "there for you in these times."  I want just one credit union. One tractor company. Even one snack food corp to play something decent. Maybe some Norwegian Death Metal n show the latest lawnmower tearing down the grass or something. Motorhead "Killed by Death" background showing the kids speeding on the empty roads for AllState and 'Angel of Death' for Humana maybe? Something different and uplifting in these trying times.....

There was (is) something very odd about targeting churches.  I resisted thinking so for the longest time because I don't want to be one of those people, but drive-in Dairy Queens but no drive-in churches just doesn't make sense.  They had to know some fundamentalist churches would resist and maybe hoped to make an example of an acceptable punching bag.

If it was purely out of concern and general crowd suppression they would better have targeted, say, the Hispanics in this state who are way disproportionately overrepresented in the case numbers (13% of the population, 33% of cases), presumably because they live in their own little highly social self-contained communities and don't pay attention to what the white folks are going on about, generally, much like those slaughterhouse workers, though these are agricultural laborers mostly who aren't in cramped indoor work settings but outside. "The casual racism of low expectations."

Or like my Russian neighbors who have carried on oblivious, bless them, Russia is a big country and Moscow is a long ways away.

That video reminded me that the news reported on a guy who was working on a cruise ship who finally got home today. He said they were locked in their rooms 22 hours a day, and that 4 crew members on ships committed suicide during the last couple of weeks. I'm sure that was much safer and healthier for the crew than being allowed to walk the decks and play shuffleboard to kill the hours. Good thing they were "protected" from evil coronachan.  :
