Tried nuking Malwarebytes.  Closed SKYPE and restarted it.  Still same message: Unable to connect to SKYPE.
Could it be SKYPE no longer recognizes these older Vista and XP versions?

Gunner65

I am now getting the sudden urge to break something! >:( :)

Or maybe dump a case or two of empty beer cans on my floor and start pounding them like the "Ghostler" !

A good thought and a definite possibility.  The Skype server might be giving you the "F.U. you too old. Go away".  In that case you are hosed.
You would have to look into Brigs suggestion of updating to Windows 10 which would be as fun as a root canal over an iffy DSL line and very well
might trash your whole system.

Did you try Skype Web from Chrome?

Yes.  This was its response:

I am using Chrome, but it is not the latest updated version because Windows Vista no longer supports updates for ANYTHING!  That could also be the problem.

It would be so easy to just update to Windows 10, but I'm guessing your hard drive doesn't have room for it?  Maybe just ask a buddy if you can borrow their phone.  LOL.

Hmm, does this look dangerous:

Asking for a friend.

I saw that too! LOL!  I think I avoided that one, or the link no longer existed or something.

Yeah.  Well if you are going the Windows route you need to be on Windows 10.   You need to have everything you care about backed up as you might very well have
to start over from scratch if the upgrade goes sour.

Yeah, apparently you have to upgrade to Windows 7 at minimum...

Or try that questionable "skaip"  thing (I don[t recommend it)

What I think I should do (if and when I can afford it) is buy a cheaper laptop with windows 10.  That way I won't have to pay someone with an external hard-drive to transfer all my shit from this Vista unit.  My other Dell shut down on my in Sepy 2017 and I have this Acer with Vista as a back-up.  I'm surprised it has lasted this long.

Doesn't everything think Windows 10 sucks anyway? Maybe I should wait for Microsoft to actually create a working operating system for a change!

Windows 10 is wonderful!

They stopped doing that after MS-DOSv6 or something as I recall...

If you go that route, once you are settled on your new system, don't throw the old Acer out.   Try a desktop Linux flavor out and see if you can live with it.  If you can [many can not] - there is no going back.  Elementary OS might be a good choice.

DSL should be adequate as long as you aren't doing anything else with your connection at the same time.
Translation: no surfing porn while doing the gabcast...

Gunner65

Anyway, sorry for the let down folks.  I really did try to do everything I could with what I have.

You could always just call in and chat for awhile... I'm sure somebody here will post the gabcast phone number...

I may just do that. I will try and not drink too many beers beforehand, I normally listen to the Patriot Outlaws http://www.patriotoutlaws.com/  from 7-9 Saturday nights.  All this computer crap today has given me a headache!

I’d think a regular Dietrich listener would be used to that.

Could you boot up on a USB flash drive with Linux Mint live  and then install Skype for Linux?

I have downloaded and installed both SKYPE versions (7.38 and 7.39) and this is the message it is giving me:

That's because Skype's network won't allow any "antiquated" version of the application to connect.

Senda has also used Sweet Baby Ray's while doing work like that on his 'puters. He's had good success.
