Radio and Podcasts / BattleCam
January 25, 2016, 03:08:16 AM
I just found out about this channel tonight and couldn't take my eyes off of it.
It's battlecam, where two people face off, webcam to webcam, for popularity votes. There is also a side chatbox where all the people make jokes and troll the people on the camera.

https://www.battlecam.com/alkidavid

There were 20 minutes where the audience voted a man passed out in front of his computer screen with Bud cans everywhere the winner every time-even though he wasn't speaking.

Users can have individual channels as well.
I watched user glazed420 stare at his screen for 20 minutes "just waiting for people to show up"

Random Topics / Binge TV and Decades TV
May 16, 2015, 04:43:45 AM
This stations shows a complete series of a tv show over a few days. I first caught it when they were broadcasting The Saint.

http://www.decades.com/file/DECADES_BINGE_Calendar_update_03052015.pdf

On my local channels, it is one of the sub channels under our local CBS affiliate. Starting Saturday at 2pm, they will be showing every episode of The Twilight Zone. They are wrapping up Dark Shadows before that.

"Decades will rely primarily on programming from the extensive content library owned by CBS Television Distribution[4] (which includes most of the Paramount Television library â€" which CBS had acquired as a result of absorbing Paramount's syndication unit in 2006 through its split from Viacom into a separate company â€" along with series from Desilu Productions, Bing Crosby Productions, Don Fedderson Productions, QM Productions, Spelling Television and Republic Pictures Television)."

Technology / Radio Wire Question
April 11, 2015, 07:14:59 PM
I am looking for this cable in the picture. I don't know what it is called-one end is a 3.5mm jack and the second half is two bare wires for the am antenna input of a stereo receiver.

Can I just take a normal male/male cable and cut off one end with some wire cutters?

Anyone know a cheap way to buy a VHS rewinder online? I'm not talking about hunting around garage sales-I'm looking for a place that stocks and sells VHS rewinders normally.

Politics / Switzerland Unpegs itself from Euro
January 25, 2015, 07:07:43 PM
The Swiss Franc is on the rise.

QuoteNow, in Switzerland, we have a demonstration of just some of the risks that might emerge were a surplus country to leave the euro zone.
In September 2011, Switzerland pegged its currency to the euro to set a ceiling to the Swiss franc's rapid appreciation in the wake of the global financial crisis that erupted in 2008.
...

Though the initiative to require a fixed share of gold reserves failed, the prospect of large-scale quantitative easing by the European Central Bank, together with the euro's recent slide against the dollar, intensified the political pressure to abandon the peg.

http://www.straitstimes.com/news/opinion/more-opinion-stories/story/the-fat-tail-the-swiss-shock-20150120

QuoteSwitzerland will probably remain in deflation. But the SNB should not be lambasted for removing the cap. Rather, it should be criticised for adopting it in the first place. When central banks try to manipulate exchange rates, it almost always ends in tears.

I was looking into using a portable battery to power a Sirius radio while out of the car. I have a radio with an aux input I can use as the speakers.
Has anyone tried using a setup like this before?

The portable batter looks like this:

"At first glance, Sammy seems like a normal border collie living with the Stephenson family in Bethesda, MD. He enjoys running in the park, digging holes, and chewing up shoes, just like any other dog. But don’t be fooled! One Redditor found this photo from 1913 in a history textbook."

Random Topics / Impending Global Whiskey Shortage
June 12, 2014, 01:38:19 PM
We are running out of whiskey according to this article from the Smithsonian Magazine.

We’re Drinking Whiskey Faster Than Distillers Can Make More
Whiskey supplies are running low

"Sales data show that most coveted whiskey of all is now the high-end, decade-plus aged varieties. Unfortunately, whiskey brewers preparing today's stocks 10 or more years ago did not see that coming. "

A link from artbell.com on a theory some Danish scientists have on how the pyramids were built:
Short idea:
"able to move massive stone blocks across the desert by wetting the sand in front of a contraption built to pull the heavy objects"
"A wall painting discovered in the ancient tomb...depicts 172 men hauling an immense statue using ropes attached to a sledge. In the drawing, a person can be seen standing on the front of the sledge, pouring water over the sand..."

Politics / Toyota moves to Texas
April 28, 2014, 11:09:07 PM
Toyota is moving some of its operations from California to Texas.
About 2,300 employees will remain in California and 3,000 will be moved to Texas.

If the land formerly occupied by Toyota is converted into housing, the property taxes could be worth more than the taxes Toyota paid.
A friend of mine says people are already trying to get at the land and real estate from these employees. There is a big shiny new Berkshire Hathaway building down here as well-they are betting big on California real estate.

The real estate in the area around where the aerospace industry collapsed is now worth a small fortune. All of the houses run from $800,000 up. Even as companies and jobs leave, real estate prices continue to climb in Southern California.

Random Topics / The "No Hassles" Things to Do Thread
April 07, 2014, 02:51:42 AM
I was thinking about a post Unscreened Caller made about online tickets and "insurance". I notice there are so many events these days-baseball games, movies, any kind of concert or event-where there are so many of these annoying policies designed to take money from you. I go to the park and there are people running businesses there(Yoga classes, crossfit training and the like) I think it is frustrating enough that I just don't like going anywhere because of the hassle.

Five different fees tripling the price, long lines at restaurants, when you get to the restaurant people looking at you eating waiting to steal your seat, online ticket convenience fees, endless tolls, no camping spots available, or camping fees higher than the price of a Motel 6.

So I decided to write down all the no-bullshit entertainment activities I could think of.
Here is what I have so far, please feel free to add to the list:

1. Bowling (the least Bullshit thing I can think of)
2. Hiking (for the day)
3. Playing Cards
4. Denny's

Random Topics / What is happening in Venezuela?
February 21, 2014, 03:01:43 AM
I guess there is a considerable amount of public strife in Venezuela and no one is reporting it.
http://caracaschronicles.com/2014/02/20/the-game-changed/
"Throughout last night, panicked people told their stories of state-sponsored paramilitaries on motorcycles roaming middle class neighborhoods, shooting at people and  storming into apartment buildings, shooting at anyone who seemed like he might be protesting. People continue to be arrested merely for protesting, and a long established local Human Rights NGO makes an urgent plea for an investigation into widespread reports of torture of detainees."

CNN  http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/20/world/americas/venezuela-qa/
"Somethings going on, we have pictures and obfuscating text"

Japan Times  http://goo.gl/Bk2CTd
"Venezuelan opposition leaders condemned the government Thursday for its heavy-handed attempt to subdue a protest movement with nighttime sweeps that have turned many parts of the country into dangerous free-fire zones."

Technology / 3D Monitors
February 19, 2014, 07:36:56 PM
Does anyone have a 3D monitor and what is your opinion of it?
I was considering purchasing one, however, I don't know how much support is out there for the things I want to do with it.
What I want to do with it: Charts/graphs and OLAP cubes. 3d renderings of molecules.

Technology / Music for Tech Work
February 09, 2014, 08:49:53 AM
What kind of music do you listen to when you put on your headphones and do your tech work?
I tend to put on the same CD and repeat it 8 times. Or Wagner's Ring Cycle.
The other day I spent about 12 hours listening to AC/DC's Powerage while coding some stuff.

Technology / Amazon's Newest Intern...You
November 11, 2013, 08:22:45 PM
Since Amazon bought Goodreads (and before), they have been making a giant push to turn users into a sales force/customer service.

In addition to constantly spamming for reviews, they are now spamming for you to answer questions, example below:

QuoteATC Replace Battery Now 9 Cell 7800mAh/7.8Ah Li Ion Brand New High Capacity Laptop Notebook Replacement Battery

As someone who owns ATC Replace Battery Now 9..., can you help this fellow customer?

So lets toss out some clever ideas for getting Art out of his noncompete. This is just for fun of course.

1) Through various tax decisions and decisions that exclude SiriusXM from normal broadcast regulations, SiriusXM has proven that they are not actually a broadcast company. All other broadcast companies are required to comply to certain regulations which SiriusXM is not required to comply with, therefore Art broadcasting is a different industry, under different regulations, and the noncompete does not apply.

2) The patents on the SiriusXM internet player may be held offshore (such as Ireland or the Caymans) by a company that is not Sirius (but wholly owned by Sirius). In this case, Art could say SiriusXM does not have the rights to enforce a noncompete with him. The offshore patent holder would have to enforce the noncompete. However, Art did not sign a noncompete with the offshore patent holder.

3) Art could argue his live broadcasts are a different industry than Sirius-Art's broadcasts are in fact, concerts and held to different rules than a XM-radio show broadcast. Similar to the Metallica concert broadcast, each of Art's individual shows would need an individual contract.

I came across a Somewhere In Time Art Bell broadcast (rebroadcast of Sat show) on an 890am on Sunday night around 9pm Pacific time. Does anyone know what affiliate this is and what city it is from?

One of AB's comments on Sept 25 (Mark Apler show) was that AB felt a fear of comets was built into our genetic code.

I also noticed that people seem fascinated with mass extinctions-asteroid strikes, disease pandemics, and nuclear war. The end of the world is also a frequent mass fear. So is the fear of these things built into our DNA as well? Does our DNA contain a built in kill switch activated by a comet? Did the Anunookis put it there?

Radio and Podcasts / Peru, Plant Meds, Ayouwuakka
September 09, 2013, 01:43:11 PM
Here was an ok show about some plant medicines. It doesn't get interesting until about 18 minutes in when you can hear them chant in a ceremony.
http://hearingvoices.com/news/2012/09/hv141-ayahuasqueros/

"Ayahuasquero, the Master Shaman and practitioner of plant medicine. In this ritual, the shaman consumes a potent brew made from the Ayahuosco, a sacred vine of the Amazonian jungle, the “vine of the souls”. The brew induces a powerful psychedelic experience that causes visual and auditory hallucinations.

It is in this state that the Ayahuasquero conjures the “icaro” or magic song."

Michael Hastings was on with John B. in February this year. He was the guy that ended every clause with "you know." It was painful radio.
He was the Rolling Stone reporter that did the interview with General McChrystal (before McChrystal was relieved of duty).
He died at age 33 in a car crash in the center of Los Angeles.
The car accident was at 4:25am this morning. I am unsure if he died there or later at the hospital from injuries.
