Miley Cyrus should be a strong contender for this thread's All-Around Award

Haha yep "At night I sleep lengthwise, when you're gone I sleep diagonally ..."   ::)  (Although some are delightfully evocative.)

Yep I agree except for pure musical virtuosity ... those guys are friggin instrumental titans, with some very complex phrasing, etc. - when they feel like it.  :)  And you gotta love their respect for the GD - one of their best live covers ever was Terrapin Station.   8)

yep, that is one of the many things that I like about them (what I put in bold) I pretty much agree with everything else you posted. The Art Bell show tonight is pretty much singing to the choir for me at this point and I'm a time traveler so I'm going to see if I can find the Phish cover of Terrapin.

p.s. I edited my previous post so read the end of it

What are you doing listening to Miley Cyrus?

There are many, but coming across Hanson on the dial the other night made me squeamish.

I have Sirius with my new ride and while I love it, it's made me realize how much garbage has been recorded. And circa 1996 seems to be a dividing line.

Not so much listening as not being able to get away from it, or her - she was everywhere there for awhile, thankfully 24/7 coverage has mostly died down now.

It was 1978 for me

OK, I listened to their cover of Terrapin. It was really good. If I had been in the audience my head might have exploded with joy to hear them play it. Still, when Jerry sings it he has this beautiful delicate voice that makes it. So my vote goes to the original. heh.

Also there was no virtuosity, they played Terrapin note for note with the studio album, I think. Not to say they don't have musical virtuosity, they do, they just didn't show it in that cover.

I also just listened to a live Dead version to compare...not to be all competitive or anything but it does blow Phish's version away.

Sorry, I guess this thread is for bands we hate. Luckily in this day and age I'm not forced to listen to music I hate anymore but when I was..Fine Young Cannibals and Billy Ocean.

Pearl Jam.  This guy puts it better than I can.

https://youtu.be/EpFPuS1o9d0?t=15m15s

"That was fucking hair metal, funk metal bullshit.  Fuck that band, fuck Green River, Mother Love Bone.  That shit was fucking lame when it came out.  None of us liked those bands.  Those were fucking funk-metal jam bands.  Anybody who's trying to tell you that those bands were like, you know,  "proto-grunge", get the fuck out of here.  Those were fucking hair metal bands who didn't have enough money to move to LA.  They're fucking like high fiving each other on the cover?  Like, are you kidding me?  This was like the ultimate fucking bro-shit stoner, fucking lame-ass jam band, battle of the bands, MusicSmith fucking Stratocaster, velvet fucking top hat, fucking scarf wearing Paisley bullshit ever.  Man, did i fucking hate that band.  Ugh."

Agreed to all, but in this case I was just speaking about the sentimental content of the cover.  :)  It was done on an anniversary of Jerry's passing and was an emotional tribute to the musical realms he pioneered.

As for virtuosity, you've just gotta seek out some of their live jams.  Some extraordinary stuff, I assure you.  8)

Hey Banana, glad you're still with us. I happened to grow up in Seattle and listened to those bands before mtv got a hold of them. I like Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, myself...and Nirvana for that matter. I guess you could call it depressing, it was a lot better than what came before. Girls, Girls, Girls by Motley Crue?!

You should check out the rest of the video then.  Part of the video is his first person perspective of how teens at the time (late 80s, early 90s) were starving for something like Nirvana and were sick of bands like Motley Crue, EMF, Living Colour, etc and how much of a gamechanger Nirvana was.  And also how the record industry milked the grunge thing dry once they realized Nirvana wasn't really going anywhere after In Utero.

A good band I change the channel immediately (don't hate, just won't listen) is Van Halen.

I was also going to add Stone Temple Pilots to the list of bands I liked that I had forgotten about. It was mentioned in that video you posted. So I guess Weiland just died. I did want to ask though, is that guy in the video some sort of reporter? He spends the first 30 seconds of what you posted with his opinion that all these bands suck. Then he goes into Kurt Cobain's addiction. None of his 'reporting' had much to do with the music. The best part of the video is when he showed the videos of the bands he was denigrating. The saving grace of this video was when he played a little guitar at the end.

Also I forgot to mention MTV came up with the name 'grunge'. We didn't call it that.

He used to review for Pitchfork.  You can't find any of his stuff on the site anymore since they gave him the redacted treatment after the Conde Nast acquisition.  So he has a reputation as a bitter ex-Pitchfork writer, and I can't really argue with that.  Dude's an asshole but he's entertaining as hell if you follow him on Twitter or his podcast.

Pete Hernandez, er, Bruno Mars, is in the mix as a possible performer at the Super Bowl halftime show

I love how much of an inoffensive pander-fest the Super Bowl has become.

Next year: a static shot of bread for 20 minutes. Not the band. Actual bread.

Maybe someone gave him a choice at gunpoint.  Watch Miley Cyrus try to act or listen to it try to sing.

At least Bruno loves and respects old rock and roll.
