I'd like to add that pretty much any music with a distortion guitar just sucks. It's why I think most modern rock music is crap.

I know it was a gimmick but "Electric Mud" I've always liked. Sure, not 'real' blues but an interesting psychedelic mix that, I think, turned out pretty interesting.

Any metal group, with the exception of Sabbath, AC/DC, and Led Zep - although I don't consider them that.  Any punk band.  Most prog bands.  Any Grunge bands.  Disco, with a few exceptions.  Same with Rap and Hip Hop.  Any modern Country band or singer. The Hair Bands, the Boy Bands, the recent female singers that sound the same, from Britney to Madonna to J-Lo to Selena Gomez and all the rest - it's no wonder Paris Hilton thought she should put out an album, hers wasn't worse than the others.  And now Taylor Swift has crossed over and joined them.

Metalica, Green Day, Motley Crue, any 'name' band that isn't easily recognized by their sound (i.e., been around for awhile and still manages to sound like everyone else).

I think Queen mostly sucks.  James Taylor.  Dio.  How much time do we have?

Hated and overrated-Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. People in the 60's must have all been high off their asses if these 2 artists had careers.

I look at putting the music out there as falling under 3 separate categories - writing it, recording it, and performing it live.  Very few do all three well.

Dylan was a fantastic writer.  To the point we can overlook the singing.  There are others in the same category.

The Gratetful Dead were the best band to ever have performed live, period.  Their records - studio and live - stink.  Their recorded music falls woefully short of capturing the spark, and much - but not all - of it is quite unlistenable.  Those 50th year anniversary shows this past summer with Trey filling in for Jerry were terrible.  Further is lousy.  Rat Dog is lousy.  Phil Lesh and Friends is lousy.  Planet Drum is lousy.

Maroon 5 and the Black Eyed Peas rank pretty high up there.
What's with these whiny lead singers?  Now he's whining about his acne.  Poor baby.  Try tattooing your face.

Neil Diamond.
Coming off the stage at an all star gala affair, as Bob Dylan was going on.

Diamond to Dylan:  "Top that, Dylan."
Dylan to Diamond:  "What I gotta' do...go out there and fall asleep?"

Wow yeah I'd love to know who is considered a good songwriter if Dylan sucks?  Even if you disregard everything after '74, his early period is enough to catapult him to the top.  Btw I always liked his singing, had a raw appeal for me.

Also agree that GD live were amazing, if inconsistent.  At one point they were capable of playing something like 300 songs live (if occasionally screwing up the lyrics and/or playing out of tune etc.).  Jerry highly respected Dylan himself btw.

Ok, now this'll bug some folks, but Phish, for pure musical inventiveness and virtuosity may have even slightly surpassed GD.  (Actually though I'm surprised they haven't shown up on this list - lotta hate for them as they're classified as a hippie/jam band etc.)  But truly those guys are amazing musicians, especially live.  (I'd also add mid-70's Yes and probably Zep to this elite group.)

REM I think. And it's not really an abiding hatred, but I drove with my cousin on a road trip and she blared their recent album (Orange) way too long and I just had like an allergic reaction to it. It wasn't early twenties angst, the music was a wrongness in nature...I don't think I'm into Stipe's voice. And "groomed" country music. Garth Straight etal. I dig bluegrass, old country like Marty Robbins. JC. But the modern stuff just doesn't really stack up. For the dude extolling the Dead...I only caught two shows over one weekend post-Touch of Grey and, while good individual performances were given, I don't think they rate absolute best? Maybe their endurance, you mean? But yeah, I didn't hear many of their non-bootlegs that I liked, as far as their albums go that I've heard. They're a strange band as far as defying standard attributes. I saw a Police show in the early 80's that was great. I've seen quite a few of my guitar idols live that all exceeded my expectations live. Especially Satriani. Steve Morse blew my mind. Real virtuoso stuff is so great to see live.
So to sum up? REM sucks ass.

Some but not all of this is simply not true. The first part, YEAH they are the best to have performed live, well as far as I have seen (that's not saying much though, hehe) but the rest of your comment... Have you listened to American Beauty, Workingman's Dead or From the Mars Hotel and just to mention two of their live albums (not to mention  their live bootlegs) Without a Net or Europe '72? Those stink?!

Let me know if you've heard all those and still feel the same way.

I like Phish too. I think people have a problem with their nonsensical lyrics. They are pretty idiotic "The tires are the things that make contact with the road" ug. That said I like Phish and especially the Picture of Nectar album (I actually met Nectar). And their music is really good. I went to a show of theirs a long time ago and everyone was screaming "PLAY FREEBIRD" I  laughed because I thought it was a joke, like every audience always wants the band to play Freebird, but they pulled it out, acapella, and I mean they voiced the instruments too. It was really great. They don't come close to surpassing Grateful Dead though not in music or especially lyrics.

edited to add Nectar was the owner of a restaurant/live band playing place in Burlington, Vt.

all of Metallica or just part...cause if you say Metallica after And Justice for All i will agree

Everything after Justice, yes. But I can't listen to any of their music at all anymore, and I think the band themselves are a bunch of insufferable pricks.

Haha yep "At night I sleep lengthwise, when you're gone I sleep diagonally ..."   ::)  (Although some are delightfully evocative.)

Yep I agree except for pure musical virtuosity ... those guys are friggin instrumental titans, with some very complex phrasing, etc. - when they feel like it.  :)  And you gotta love their respect for the GD - one of their best live covers ever was Terrapin Station.   8)
