what the fuck?

I love Art, LOVE him, but how much longer does he expect the fans to keep accepting this type of behavior?

From Art's Facebook

"Sometimes when you are "all in" you win, sometimes lose. By mutual agreement Dark Matter will no longer air as of tonight."

I was right--Art was looking for an excuse to quit.  The rest is bullshit.

What a joke. Nice middle finger from Art to all of his fans who shelled out money to listen to him on XM. Wow.

I love Art to death, listened to him forever, always thought the best of him, but this is the last and final straw. No more bullshit, no more playing people. People who signed up just for him were just delivered a huge kick in the ass. It's going to take a hell of a lot to ever regain my respect after this bullshit move, and this time a hell of a lot isn't going to cut it. From all your loyal friends, Art, thanks a lot for pulling that football out one last time.

Brutal. He only lasted 1 1/2 months. I doubt we'll ever hear him again outside of some podcast show. Terrible day.

I believe both Sirius\XM and Art Bell are both relieved and blown away by the response to this show.  Certainly I believe the demand for this show from fans around the world was not something they were counting on.  Since Art's past regular C2C days, the internet and re-broadcast of Art's old shows have established a solid and large international fan base.

I believe one of two things:

1. Art Bell ultimately wants to break from Sirius/XM.  Art  sees how big his domestic and international fan base is and has realized that he can reach many many more people by streaming from his website and can make much more money from advertising to an international audience.  Also hurting C2C more in the process.

2.  Sirius/XM was not prepared for the international appeal and currently have no way to benefit from such a huge base.  By making it look like Art demanded this, they get to experiment with this delivery method without hearing cries of foul from others on the Sirius roster.  As a Howard Stern fan as well, I can tell you that Howard re-signed with Sirius last year and has a little more than 2 years remaining on his contract.  Howard has hinted that he is looking into other broadcast methods.  Howard and Sirius are not on the best of terms over the terms and nonpayment of bonuses form his last contract.  I believe Sirius realizes there is a strong possibility that Howard may eventually go to a website podcast delivery method.  Also, Howard has a strong international base as well.  By doing this with Art, they get to test this method, work out the bugs, and reach an international audience which means they can then sell commercial time based on a delivery to an international audience.  Yes, they could lose the odd subscriber, but they can potentially make more money by reaching an international audience.  They also get to hurt C2C more and pull away more fans and advertisers.

Either way .. :)

Option 1 it is ... look for an announcement to be made in the coming days .. and a free stream to begin within 4 weeks

A good gauge for the problem is the live thread here on BellGab, which is why Producer-Paul checks in almost nightly.  There hasn't been a night yet that at least some people aren't reporting problems with the stream dropping, sometimes repeatedly.  There was one night earlier this week that easily better than half the participants in the thread were having frequent problems.  At one point, everyone on the thread was affected and we all got a recorded message from SiriusXM apologizing for the technical problem.   We lost a good 10 minutes of Art's show while this apology message played on a loop.

I think everyone should read the above-quoted post twice.

I don't think this is going to be a huge problem.

I think Sirius knows that Art is a great intro to new subscribers and will say yes to this.

I don't plan on listening to the show live through artbell.com because it's not often that I can listen exactly at 10. Also, after trying the service out I am going to stick with being a Sirius subscriber for a long time.

So no, I don't think this is a huge deal, I think art is throwing his weight around a tiny bit but he is doing it because he wants people to be able to listen on artbell.com with out the hassle of the stream dropping and because he does have a huge international fan base and they have no legal way to listen to art.

My prediction is on Monday this is settled with Sirius saying yes.

agree, agree, agree.
