Anyones theory on the glass box? And who was the millionaire who set it up? I so like the idea that it was a tv the whole time.

That's my favorite interpretation. I'm guessing Bad Cooper set it up? In the photograph Cole saw it was him next to the box talking to someone who wasn't familiar (I'm guessing wasn't introduced in the show). But yeah, another open ended question with no resolution.

I read somewhere that the black lodge red room, when viewed from above is a literal television set: The red drapes make the edges of the screen, and the black and white zig zags are the static on the screen. Great observation :)

Nice article on the Bullet Cluster, which was discussed early in this thread at length, from Ars Technica:

I recall distinctly that Audrey told Charlie that she had a dream about Billy with blood on his face. It's gotta be him.

The significance of this fact yet eludes me.

That slipped right past me, I'll have to watch the Audrey scenes again (which is too bad since they were some of the worst of the season).
And puts a nail in the Billy Zane connection too, which is too bad.

I find it difficult to imagine what might happen if I went back in time and told my 90s self that one day "man-buns" would be a thing dudes will do to their hair. The most likely outcome would be that my young self would spontaneously suicide, leaving me trapped with the knowledge the world is on a collision course with hipsterdom and there's nothing I can do to stop it.

Well. I say bring on the paradox because the future is weird, man

Nice thoughts. I thought it was gonna be Billy Zane as well. I think Billy was the guy in jail cell with bloody face. Tina's daughter is in Roadhouse telling other girl (David lynch's wife) about Billy being at her house and running out with blood all over his face. It makes sense that that was him.

I hear a new season is in discussion. If so , Lynch says it won't be for about 4 years.

Yeah, from the clues we have in the show, it's probably the jail cell guy. From what I could piece together, Jail Cell Billy was on the drug that Red was selling, along with Tina, Itchy Armpit Girl, 1-1-9 Lady, along with other bit characters. It's really frustrating that this subplot was apparently just entirely dropped from the show altogether after being deliberately introduced.

I can accept that some of it is visual metaphor. For example, the girl Bobby sees in the car with the screaming Aunt in one of the middle episodes might not be a literal zombie, she might just be represented that way on the show because she's on the drug. But even the visual language of the show doesn't excuse the complete jettison of these subplots altogether. I feel like the Season 3 viewing experience would not have changed significantly if Red had been altogether removed from the plot. In fact, you could probably watch Episode 1 and Episode 18 back to back and it might still make as much sense as it did at the end of the 18 week run. That's really annoying to me. What's the point of those middle 16 episodes, then? :)

I got fairly into the Twin Peaks lore before going into this season. I rewatched Fire Walk With Me and some key episodes from Season 1 and Season 2. I don' t think any of this gave me any edge in watching 3 at all. That might be good or bad, but it's probably not something I would do again for 4. Then again in 4 years time my thoughts on this whole season may change. Honestly I think a lot of my enjoyment came out of watching a serialized show week-to-week, something Netflix binges have largely done away with for me. I don't watch much television otherwise.

Nonsensical plotting and abandoned plot points aside, still better than the X-Files remake. :)

What the hell happened to Audrey??? In a dream? Mental patient? Coma?

wish David Lynch spent at least 5 more minutes on her story.

The most prolific thoughts I've read on the series has been from here: https://ozba.wordpress.com/2017/08/31/twin-peaks-audrey-billy-and-living-inside-a-dream/

My favorite take on the Audrey thing is that is actually a shot of Sherilynn Fenn "waking up" in the makeup chair getting ready to play Audrey. The mirror looks like one used to apply makeup. This, combined with Audrey's obsession with Billy (Zane?) is maybe supposed to represent Audrey's expanding consciousness of being a character in a television show, or vice versa, Sherilynn's new awareness of Audrey having a "life" beyond what she directly portrays on the screen, that she is an independent "character" in her own right.

The show was strangely aware of itself all the way through. Cooper's choice in Episode 3 had him choose an electrical socket with "3" or "15" on it, which were actual episode numbers. That's a pretty meta-detail in that episode. The characters killed in Episode 1 were literally watching a television screen (the box "experiment") with couch and end-tables and all.

I also like the interpretation that in Episode 8, the Giant/Fireman placed the orb in with Laura Palmer in it on Earth. In fact, he is placing the concept of Twin Peaks (the show itself) on our Earth, as the shot of Laura used is exactly the same as from the opening of the show. I generally also like the interpretation that the world at the end is supposed to be our Earth. I wish there would have been some support for this at the end of the show, maybe even with the homeowner of Sarah's home watching Season 1 or 2 of the show in the background. Time is not treated at all linearly, so some understanding of the ending may come from watching the show out of order or somesuch, but I haven't quite been able to fit that together. I do think the whole season is basically a big time-loop. After all, we see the trickster with the large-nose mask sneak out of the lodge/convenience store at the end of Episode 18.

I also like the idea that Judy is that ceiling fan!

Ears are still ringing from 108 hours straight rain from Harvey.
Oh crap, where in the state are you? Hope you're generally alright and safe.

I have friends in Tampa that I've been keeping in close touch with, they chose not to evacuate while Irma passed them. They're in the suburbs and fortunate to have power restored already.

So this morning I went to grab a quote to post somewhere from awhile back and just spent my lunch hour reading about the blitz and the test show. So many old posters that have long since vanished. I think bellgab could be put into book form or at least some of it would make a very interesting read.
So is Art now gone from this place for good? I haven't been able to put together the whole story on what happened there. I'm vaguely aware he had another child recently?

A bit vacuous, but that's to be expected. Are you still in Mexico?

FRBs are relatively new phenomena to astronomers, and only a handful have been discovered to date including a repeating source. But it seems unlikely there will not ultimately be a natural explanation for them.

Otherwise as more and more of them are discovered, the sky will seem to fill up with apparent UFO beacons...

I read "Hell's Angels: A Strange And Terrible Saga" while waiting in airports this summer. It definitely had it's moments but I feel like a lot of the book was very repetitive, like Thompson was actually doing a lot of padding with some of the descriptions. I've also just started "The Foundation Trilogy" by Asimov but I haven't made much headway into that yet.

I don't know if comics count in the Coastgab Book Club or not, but the new Moon Knight by Jeff Lemire is really great too.

Onan, Bdubb, Jazzmunda and EddieDean... gone?

What kind of bleak hellscape have I returned to?!

Loved watching the show week to week, but I do feel that a lot of it was very indulgent. The length of time in some cases between lines, the timing of the actors, the time spent on shots like sweeping up peanuts for two minutes. These are examples of when the show felt off and missed it's mark for me. I don't understand the ending at all, but I like some of the self-aware meta-analysis that I've seen in it. Interesting overall.

I wish the ending was a little more transparent for those mere mortals watching.

Well, I'm really eating shit after writing these things off completely after the last boom.

Fifty pages? Wow.

Hope you all are doing well and got to enjoy the eclipse! I had a terrible time here, completely cloudy and nothing at all to see.

Been busy as hell and since Art's last retirement, I've not really been back. But I miss this forum a lot.

Lately I've been getting interested in fast radio bursts (FRBs). These are ms to second scale bursts in the radio which show high dispersion measure, a sign they have passed through a lot of matter to get to us so must have travelled a great distance. The current thinking is that super magnetized neutron stars may produce them in some way, since the bursts from one object have been seen to repeat (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-recurring-question-where-do-fast-radio-bursts-come-from/), and that possibly the great brightness and dispersion of these bursts may come about from lensing of magnetar flares. This recent paper is really interesting: https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.06580
And some general background about FRBs: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/may/28/fast-radio-bursts-galaxy-far-away

After Jupiter became a star, I think in the novel they referred to it as Lucifer afterward. That was always a creepy choice to me.

Mr Orange!  Good to see you.

A "subsurface ocean", eh?  Will it give BP a new place to drill once their offshore drilling platforms start coming up dry here on earth?  ;)

haha

No new particle from 2016 CERN data after all! The apparent signals turned out to be statistical background and went away with the 2016 data. The standard model stands tall for now.
