So I gather from this that your friend wants a strong leader who will do whatever he needs to do to fulfill certain campaign promises, even if it means instituting martial law and suspending everyone's constitutional rights. If he is unable to get things done through the system, he needs to suspend the system by force, even if violates the Constitution (martial law cannot be declared except in the case of an extreme emergency).

That's a heckuva deal-breaker there. He wants to "win" very badly and won't accept defeat unless Trump uses every bit of force he can muster. The odd notion, BTW, that there would be broad public support for this type of dictatorial rule, is a whole other aspect.

He does have an exaggerated idea of what Trump's popularity will be once in office.

In general what I've seen regarding Trump is a division between leadership & grass roots.  At Reason's Hit & Run blog, the bloggers (columnists) have been amazingly unfair in their treatment of Trump, while the commenters have taken Trump's side in rxn.  In the Conservative Party the membership I was getting signatures from for a Congressional candidate a few mos. ago was very enthusiastic about Trump, while the chairman is strongly opposed.  However, says that in Hispanic areas, where he was getting signatures, the Conservative Party enrollees were opposed to Trump.

So what Trump seems to represent is revolt against leadership -- anybody's leadership.  The sentiment may be overridden by some ethnic factors.
