From the book China and the Great War.  Early September of 1917.  Page excerpt mentions how China offered the UK 30,000 men to fight in the war.  The British authorities judged the merits, if any, of the offer.  Only one guy thought it would be a good idea.  "We are being given a unique chance now to extend our influence in China after the war," he said.  "If we don't take it now we shall pay the penalty later."

Attempts used to be made to smuggle food into Germany by means of what appear to be newspapers sent through the post. This photo taken in the museum shows three such packages. The one behind is a roll of newspapers intact, the second shows a bag of rice protected by dummy newspaper end. 24 September 1917.
