I like the one in Ventura Highway by America...there's a vid on YT that shows how to do it.

Great suggestion amongst a lot of them in this thread.  Never even thought about acoustic, but you are spot on.

I'd have to vote for something simple and effective, like this...

Although "Mannish Boy" might be a better choice.

Oh my.  John Lee and a bottle of Beam.  Yeah, I'm easy....

Ah, speaking of Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction.  Hell yeah.

Ha!  That was my exact thought when I read her post!!   :)

Yeah, I used a smiley-face and thought of Megadeth in the same sentence!!

Funny mentioning Megadeth - I was cranking the Countdown To Extinction album the other day, not a big metal guy but that Marty Friedman is good at melting faces.

If I remember correctly , they did an awesome cover of "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'".

That's an exhibition of dexterity in guitar playing and not a riff.

This is a good point.  I wanted to add Zep's "Since I've Been Loving You", but disqualified it for the same reason.

I'll have to look for that.  I think KMFDM did a cover of it as well called just "Boots."

Now that I think of it, I'm surprised no one's said "Black Dog" yet.

Now that you mention it, so am I.  And if you like LZ, check out Dread Zeppelin if you haven't already.

Um this very heavy indeed to watch:

Alice In Chains - Rooster

That whole album is still pretty amazing. They were all suffering from depression due to deaths of loved ones, etc., and the singer was doing heroin in the studio. It's haunted and fucked up.

Overall, AIC are a very interesting and heartfelt band. Every time I hear "No Excuses" and recall that it's about Jerry dealing with Layne's vices, it reminds me of certain friendships I've held.

While the guitar riff in this one isn't exactly "epic," it's intertwined with a beautiful and contemplative vocal melody that I find deeply memorable. I'd consider it a notable "vocal riff."

I love "no excuses".  It is a simple song as far as the main guitar line and chorus but sounds so good.  I've been on an 'unplugged' kick lately and theirs is pretty moving, IMO.  'Down in a hole is another  standout from that set, I think it's a beautiful song.  I'd post vids but I'm on my phone and it's a PITA.

Man, there have been a lot of great guitar riffs, but I'ma gonna say Hall of The Mountain King or maybe Grace of the Witch by Savatage (before they went fruity and became the Trans Siberian orchestra). They got one of them midgets in the music video.

Fuck you for making me listen to that.

MV/Liberace!

one of my favorites is the riff in the first few bars of thin lizzy's ray gun.
