Not solos..riffs... Top 100, which one is the best? Vote for it. I went for 'She sells Sanctuary' Cult.

Great link, thanks for that. I think I like Fleetwood Mac's Albatross riff the best (does that count as a riff) but that one didn't make it.

Of the stuff on the list, I vote for the Daft Punk Get Lucky because the song ended up bridging so many genres of music.

Man, hard choices. But no Megadeth or Slayer on the list at all? Aint right. Clearly masters of chord progression and riffs!! Any why just guitar? Eliminating some of the best riffs ever, like Beethoven's.

Only ONE???   Jeez, you guys are tough.  And where is Carlos?

Got a new playlist.  Thanks, York! Excellent, Monk!

I suppose "Layla" will be mentioned sooner or later.

I always had a soft spot for "Burn" by Deep Purple.  The rest of the song is dated now, but the riff is still catchy.  "Celebration Day" from Zep's live album still does it for me.

I suppose "Black Dog" should be on the list, for novelty if nothing else.

MV/Liberace!

Oh shit. Good choice.

Maybe not the greatest but I'm on a B.O.C. kick.  "Don't Fear the Reaper."

Jump In The Fire - Metallica.  How dare you only let me choose one!

"a string" Tab:

a |------0--3--0--5--0--3--0--
            A  C  D   C  A   C  A

which is to say

read the "riff notes" that spell the band's name
via Whole Lotta Rosie:

Anything

Dimly
Camazotz
Automat
Chose
AC/DC

thus sang:

Bell Over Noory
Says Camazotz On The Thread

(Screw you for pulling me in from packing to settle this with acrostics

I still have Stella Egyptian beer to drink and think before Thursday I fly/die)

AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie - Original ( Bon Scott version )

b_dubb

Love Me Two Times has a super catchy riff

Eddie Coyle

Cam nailed it with "Whole Lotta Rosie"

I'd also nominate BOC's "Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll", "Intro/Sweet Jane" on Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal and "Sweet Leaf"

zeebo

I gotta go with the Stones - "Jumpin' Jack Flash", or maybe Steely Dan - "Reeling in the Years".

This has a classic guitar riff AND cowbell and a great solo.

Mountain - Mississippi Queen

Well, I screwed the juke on that one... I appreciate the other guitarists not putting me to task. I had it in my head right, and the numbers right, but misplaced the letters....

Tab should have read:

a |------0--3--0--5--0--3--0--
            A  C  A   D  A   C  A

The band name is not consecutive...but it's still selectively significant.  Lesson learned. Don't drink and post. (but that's no fun, Mizz B Natural***.)

And then there's the riff itself and how it sounds, which is the whole point.

It energizes me so.

Alas

*** A musical shout out to fellow mysties here. It's been a little over three years since we lost the "notable" Betty Luster:

Nazareth's Whiskey Drinkin' Woman.
Has a good solo, too.

(also has cowbell)

Or "Mechanix" by Megadeth?

Um this very heavy indeed to watch:

Alice In Chains - Rooster

cweb

I've always been partial to the riff from China Grove by the Doobie Brothers. Or perhaps Plowed by Sponge.

Not sure if they can be called the "greatest," but they're pretty enjoyable.

Yorkshire pud

I like the one in Ventura Highway by America...there's a vid on YT that shows how to do it.

"Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo" and the intro to "Statesboro Blues" on "Allman Brother's at Fillmore East."

Yorkshire pud

Rush; Xanadu. Alex Lifeson's impeccable intro on the gorgeous twin neck (But gets going at 3 mins) over laid with the drums of Peart and the Pedals and twin neck bass of Lee..Three guys do this. I've seen cover bands with six can't do this.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I wish I could have lived this scene in its heyday.

Ah, speaking of Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction.  Hell yeah.

Gotta go with Keith.  This opening riff encapsulates sex, drugs and rock n' roll in unadulterated open G.  The louder you play it, the better it sounds.

Plus, a great Andy Warhol album cover:
