When I signed up on this site in 2012 the site was about C2C.  While politics was part of the discussion it wasn't a part of every discussion .  The number of wingnuts and moonbats were about equal and they not pervade all areas of the site.

All that has changed and this site is now largely, in my opinion, a right-wing echo chamber of nonsense in each and every thread.  I want no part of it and asked MV to remove my account.  I use the awake moniker on other sites and I simply don't want it here any longer so I asked MV to delete my account.  I think I was polite about it and I don't think it would take more than a few minutes of his time but so far I've been rudely rebuffed.
One receipt of my first request his response was "later".
I sent another note attempting to again ask to simply have my account deleted and the reply from MV was "go fuck yourself".

So what does it take to disassociate ones self from a site that was once enjoyable but has since metastasized into something you find repellent?

I could make enough rude posts to get myself banned but then I'd be a part of the problem.  So I'm asking, how do I get my account name off of the roles here?  It's such a small request that I'm baffled by MV's rudeness.  I don't "own" the name Awake of course but it is something I use often. 

I don't know if what I'm requesting is some kind of internet faux pas or if I've broken some other taboo but this seems like maybe three mouse clicks and done.  I hope I guess that MV is embarrassed enough by this post to grant my request.  I supposed his other option would be to delete my post and then I'll have choice but to get banned purposely but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

I don't know, never tried. But, I guess, you cannot delete your account in your settings? What about simply just not logging-in anymore, not visiting the site, and letting your posts just get far down in the past threads and naturally archive themselves. These days with waybackmachine, internet archives, and NSA data-mining/retention nothing you post on the web will "go away" anyway (unless you are in Europe where, possibly, you might have the new right to have your stuff deleted.) So just stop contributing or checking your messages and it will effectively die off?

I have done exactly as you suggest.  What I am looking to accomplish at this point is simply to have my "Awake" name removed from the members list. 


There is no way that I know of to self-delete my account.  If there is such a mechanism I'd love to know about it.

I was requesting a favor of a sort from MV.  I'd been a member for a few years and thought it not much of an inconvenience.  It isn't something owed to me in any way.  If MV had done the civil thing, as Onan has, and pointed me to a section of the rules which precludes the deletion of accounts I would have understood.  Rather than do the courtesy of that though MV chose to reply with "later" and then "go fuck yourself".  Those responses are themselves indicative of what this site has become and what I want no part of it.


Onan, Thank you!  I see you as sort of a Sisyphus character endlessly arguing for rationality.  Your posts are excellent and I'm glad you fight the good fight.  I'm just done fighting.  Thank you also for pointing out that the deletion of accounts is against the rules.  I was not aware of that and I'm glad to have that knowledge.  MV, if you read this, I now understand.  If you'd simply pointed me toward that rule rather than being, well....you, I'd have understood.

Thanks for putting together this site.  I remember I found it simply by doing a Google search for something like "I hate george noory" or something like that about two years ago.  I was so happy to realize that I was not the only person who thought noory was simply terrible at his job.  To find a community of people who liked the topics but disliked the host was gratifying.

perhaps, but in this case, i think it's just someone who is angry that there are differing views here.  i have nothing but contempt for people who are only willing to surround themselves with those who agree with them and who continually validate their unchallenged political views.  how boring.

But that is the history of humanity- and the internet only makes it worse.  A century back people had to learn to live with others whose views they found repulsive because there were a limited number of neighbours on the farm or 30 people in the town.  With urbanization it became infanetly easier to seek out and narrow down social contacts. 

As an example- look at churches that keep splitting on minor theological differences.  In a small town that could not happen.  With the internet it becomes even more exaggerated as forums spring up to support every fascet of one's preference.  I once stumbled across a christian pipe smokers forum... Yes, because christians who smoke pipes must isolate themselves from those who do not.

I think you used to have knitting clubs for people knitting everything from socks to sweaters.  I am certain if I really tried I could find an internet forum dedicated to those who believe that only socks should be crafted (and then only in the colour red and only in acrylic yarn...)  I can see what proceeded the last split would be half of the posters saying that wool was a superior insulator and the other half getting angry and touting the benefits of acrylic... Suddenly neither side can stand the other.  The internet has made it possible to search out those who do not challenge our beliefs- and most people happily take advantage of it.

Even worse is that search engines now tailor your requests to what it thinks you may like.  Liberals will get fed liberal sites and news stories to support their world view- Conservatives will be fed conservative affirming news.  It is a stupid cycle (thanks Google) and one of the things I specifically enjoy about this site.  I have said it before- when a hatred or dislike of a host who ruined a great show is the only common thread that binds a group it makes for an interesting and varied experience interacting with people who you otherwise might not.
