Neil Young has killed his shitty, $400 mp3 player and replaced it with a shitty, overpriced streaming service. This should end well.

https://www.cnet.com/news/pono-is-probably-dead-long-live-xstream/

I understood what he was going for with it but I also knew it was most likely entirely software based, proprietary but still not something that really requires specialized proprietary hardware. I'll be interested to see how long before the code goes mainstream.

a list of what microsoft claims its basic telemetry reports:

warning very long and nearly unreadable by a non geek
Hoe Lee SHIT !
That's an API to the system core with retrievable information on EVERYTHING. Direct Hive Key access to the Registry and system calls too.
This is pure data collection on every service that's running and every system call, time stamped from where it originated to where it went.
This is more than just trouble-shooting.
Why are they collecting all this data ?   Are they feeding it into their A.I. project ? (Of coarse they are.)

the best way to secure a windows computer is to remove windows and install linux or a bsd (and NOT mac osx).
How does the old joke go ?
"The instructions said XP or better, so I installed Linux"   ;)

WebRoot wasn't wrong. Windows Defender has a serious flaw. The worst part is it will activate when Defender is doing its job.

Maybe it's time for everyone to go back to their 8-bit computers now. Things were so much more innocent then.  :)

LOL - Yup.  ;D

I never realized he got blamed for either creating the Michelangelo virus or taking advantage of it to overstate the danger in order to sell copies. I remember a lot of the media talking about it back then. Wikipedia states:

Although the infected machines numbered only in the hundreds, the resulting publicity spiraled into "expert" claims, partially led by anti-virus company founder John McAfee,[2][3] of thousands or even millions of computers infected by Michelangelo. However, on March 6, 1992, only 10,000 to 20,000 cases of data loss were reported

So, did he overstate the danger or was his software just that effective?

It was transmitted by floppy, not the internet. That in itself mitigates the possible damage. Although, if you were one of the unlucky ones, it was a real threat if it moved from the floppy to the MBR.
Yeah, it was a real threat, but it was also easily mitigated.
(You could also just reset your system clock for a couple of days and then change it back to actual time, later.  ;)   )

Here's a rather long, but detailed article that explains it well.  https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/03/05/michelangelo-virus/

You might find this interesting too, a history of viruses https://lakkireddymadhu.com/tag/michelangelo/ that considers it a hoax.

"Many versions of anti-virus software released after approximately October 1991 will detect and/or remove the Michelangelo virus. "  -> http://www.cert.org/historical/advisories/CA-1992-02.cfm

That's NZ, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was common practice everywhere. In the last 12 months I had my ISP send me a new router while threatening to disconnect my services if I didn't start using it.
