judge unseals over 500 stingray (cell phone tracking) court records.
the a district court judge reseals them, overruling the lower court. and then had his order sealed as well.

a stingray is a "fake" cell tower. the phones connect to it, thinking its a tower. the stingay records all the data, while sending it to a legit tower.

Hence why we need secure phone to phone communications.  But even then they'll just intercept it directly at the phone.  We're fucked.

I'm not sure why they need these planes - my guess is they have a direct tap into the carrier anyway - you'd think they could listen in without flying planes around.

verizon to offer end to end cell phone encryption.sadly is is backdoored for the NSA...

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-12-15/verizons-new-encrypted-calling-app-plays-nice-with-the-nsa

verizon says that law enforcement will be able to tap in with "sufficient reason to do so" ;note this does not say "with a court order".

this defeats the purpose of encryption. as a general rule, only govt has the resources to tap into a cell call anyways (usually via fake cell towers).

Always informative, wr, thanks.

My NIC might be about to die.  I'm having timeouts in communication with one of the applications I use for work.  Anything else I visit has a solid connection except this one program, which is, of course, the one most vital to my work.  Been troubleshooting it since Friday night, and finally said hell with it & bought a new NIC & a cat6 cable.  Hope that fixes it.

well it sounds more like a problem with that program than a hardware issue. but ive had nics do very strange things like :
stream audio/video without issue, but not hold an IRC connection. new nic fixed the problem.

I've been on with tech support for that program, and the guy insisted the timeout is on my end.  We'll see how it goes with the new super-duper nic.  Spidey sense tells me that will fix it.

Maybe there is another CIA, inside the CIA.

thunderbolt devices can infect mac efi bios chips. it could install a rootkit in the bios/efi envrionment before the hard disk is initialized to load the operating system.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2862872/thunderbolt-devices-can-infect-macbooks-with-persistent-rootkits.html

note: USB3 devices can do this too. so its not just macs, its pretty much any modern device.

Some new desktop computers are sold with a 180 watt power supply??  How can that be enough power?

if its powering a low power pc such as a miniitx board with a amd fusion (E series), atom or celeron processor (some of these only draw 10W), 1 hard drive and 1 fan, then its plenty.

Ok, cool, thank you wr.  The one I just got has an i3, one HD... it just doesn't seem like enough, but we'll see.

its probably a mobile I3 , which is basically underclocked and low power for a laptop

microsoft debuts  a pair of $29 "smart" phones (no-contract)
a nokia 215 (no-contract) and a nokia 520 (att).

Microsoft.  *sigh*  New machine means new software installations.  There must be an easier way.

The new drive is the same size as my old one.  I'm looking into cloning, the more I read about it, the less I think it will work.  Don't think my work apps will work on Linux, though I am not opposed to using it.

Headaches shall ensue.  I will whip this new machine into submission, dammit, I will!

you can look them up to see if they work here .
and yes cloning is an option, reactivation of winders will be required.
