One is his ass scratching foot and the other is his ass kicking foot.  It's a good cop, bad cop sort of thing.

But does he get his foot in the door?

Is this the same as that 'Black Pete' fellow in Holland?

Why does he have claws on one foot and a hoof on the other?  Doesn't seem optimal for getting around

No Zwarte Pete aka black peter is a helper of santa in some traditions. Some people consider it somehow racist because he is black.
Krampus is an accomplice of santa  . He scares and threatens the kids if they are not good to take them away.

Zwarte Piet is sort of the anti-thesis of St.Nicholas, similar to Krampus. (Apparently back before he got his helpers Sinterklass himself was fairly brutal.) He helps him- but if the children were bad than "black Pete" would put them in his sack and take them back to Spain away from their parents etc. (This tradition was started when Spain was occupied by the Moors etc- not a place of vacation homes, sun, ecstasy fueled discos, and ex-pat drunk fat Brits.) But St.Nick doesn't come on Christmas in the Netherlands but comes in by boat in early Dec.

ps: you are right. The awful immigration policies and foreign press with zero knowledge of the tradition have called Zwarte Piet racist etc. in recent years. Multiculturalism is reserved for only non-European cultures, of course.

I blame the US.  Everything has to be put through the distorted lens of American history.  When I first saw "black Pete", I will admit that my first thought was the history and the baggage of black-face in America.  Only after looking at the whole thing and reminding myself that this is a whole different continent did I realize that interpretations can differ.

True, though the Low Countries, especially Belgium, has their own sordid history of colonialism and dealing with blacks and Asians in often even a more cruel way than the Americans. Having said that the "controversy" stirred up by the foreign press and immigrants over the tradition of Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet is ridiculous. What ever happened to that little thing about "cultural relativism" or "appreciating and accepting others cultural practices?" If the immigrants or foreigners don't like the culture they are free to go home! Don't move to a country and try to change its ways and culture, especially when you are often on the government dole.

Holland's Black Pete will soon be on welfare, unable to get a date or a job, and living in the same ratty run down apartment with Lil Sambo, Joe Camel, Speedy Gonzales, a cigar store Indian, Richard C Hoagland, that Ferguson cop, Steve Bartman, and Disney's Black Pete.

Imagine the mail and phone message mix-ups between the two Black Petes

thanks for that info. i got to research some more christmas stuff. Its also cool how italy has the Befana witch for christmas. My grandmother from sicily used to tell me about her when i was little.

Interesting article about terrestrial radio vs Internet podcasts.  It seems best at this point in time to have a foot in both worlds...

"Podcasts are big and getting bigger, but what are you gonna turn on when the zombie apocalypse comes?"  (Haha, and of course we'll need Art Bell to broadcast that!)

Fun story: My mother wanted a sub to sirius. I will get her something a little more thoughtful too but she really just wanted a gift card. Easy enough. Their website is dog shit. I literally would go to check out a few times over the past 2 days and would get error messages. From different sources.

I just went to Bestbuy's website, ordered the same thing, and got free Wednesday delivery. Where Sirius just would do "Free UPS Ground" which was too late today.

So a lesson on being more proactive but man, sirius is not doing themselves any favors.

I wonder if Jonathan Reed ever tires of living vicariously through Art's fb. Every post screams "hey look at me! I'm still here."

I wonder if some night, after hours of vigorous mustache combing, he sauntered drowsily into his garage and opened the freezer to retrieve a beef and bean burrito which, sinking his teeth into after heating, he discovered was actually the leg of some poor resident from several light years away.

I've had Sirius for 5+ years now. They are a horribly run company.

I usually get Sirius for $25 for 6 months. I've been doing it for years. A 10 minute call every 6 months is all it takes.
